  • Description

Hola! We are a very focused and dedicated young holistic project in Ecuador. With the clear and simple goal of a healthy lifestyle. Including growing own food, caring about our environment and a self-sustainable goal in near future. We are a holistic organic tropical farm. Originally from Europe, Switzerland. We just also started our own coffee shop a few month ago. One of our goals is to disrupt the current global value chain paradigma.

This project is for individuals who are into understanding that permaculture in a tropical humid environment is very different than a dry tropical or a non tropical environment. Our project is an permaculture site in the Valle de las Luciérnagas (Valley of the Fireflies), at the edge of the Amazonas region in Ecuador, South America. The farm is approximately 80 hectares or 200 acres. Located about 3 hours north of Loja and 15h from Guayaquil or Quito, in Southern Ecuador. The lowest part is 800 to 1300 meters over the sea level. Which means we have a high variation of micro climates. It was not so long ago a dense tropical jungle with huge trees and later in the 60s half of the property was made pasture land for cows... The fruit orchard is very diverse: Giant Soursop, Papayas, Bananas, Cacao, Lemons, Zapotes, Guayabas, Ice cream bean, Passion fruit, Sugar cane, and tons of other edibles.

    Win Win situation
For me, WorkAway isn't about finding a bunch of volunteers to just help with some stuff - I have local paid workers at the farm. It really is about a desire to share my skills with people around the world, and in return learn from them.

Questions You Have To Ask Yourself
Are you ready and willing to adapt to our rhythm of life in the tropics on our fruit farm? Are you ready for a new different reality to what you are most likely used to? Can you adapt your habits? Are you a fast learner? Be sure to agree to all living agreements BEFORE arriving.

The Key Pillars of Volunteering at our project
We are a place where you can experience a sustainable way of living while working on a tropical farm with many daily tasks. You will truly experience the challenges of living in rural South America. Use these values to help you adjust to our experience.

    1.) Appreciation
Take time to appreciate the local tropical fruits, the beautiful sun showers, the stunning sunsets and night skies, learning different languages, and being part of a farming family.

    2.) Commitment
Keeping your promises, being on time, don’t mind being out of your comfort zone, being proactive in daily tasks, enjoy challenges and being busy most of the day.

    3.) Sociable
Willing to interact by exchanging experiences, ideas, brainstorming future solutions with us, asking questions when confused, voicing your issues clearly – during your stay.

Are you about eco or ego?
Do you care about all and everybody (adults, kids, babies, cats, dogs, chickens, insects, plants, soil, water, air, sun, moon and stars) as much as yourself? Or do you focus more about you and yourself. How do you tend to interact with new people? Do you wait for others to ask questions or are you proactive also in conversations?

    Keep In Mind
The most helpful, effective, and happy participants are self-motivated, interested, responsible, and accountable.

Participation is experiential education; you are learning about permaculture and community by living in it. The most helpful, effective, and happy participants are self-motivated, interested, responsible, and accountable.

If you are interested in experiencing permaculture in action, living in community, and engaging with DIY projects in a hands-on and dynamic environment, review this page and fill out the application now!

Everyone volunteers for 5-3 hours in the mornings on farm projects or maintenance plus help to cook the meals. In the afternoon we encourage you to work on Self Initiated Projects (S.I.P.). We use shared facilities: kitchen; bathroom; manual laundry area, and we take turns with daily chores such as cleaning.

Eat healthy seasonal, local and partially organic food.
We eat as much organic produce as possible and harvest as much of our food from the finca as we can. Sunday's we go to one of the local markets to buy our food for the entire week. We cook all our meals together. In the kitchen we have a water filter (Berkey Light Water Filtration System with 4x ceramic filter elements - 99.99% of viruses, bacteria also lead and chlorine).
Fruits and vegetables at here - Depending on the season you an find: papayas, bananas, plantain, cacao, ice cream bean, sugar cane, pineapple, guava, lemons, guayusa, hierba luisa (lemon grass type), cassava (yuca), wild cherry tomatoes, corn, rosemarie, basil, thine, aloe vera, vettiver, neem, noni, naranjilla, zapote and we have been planting guanábanas, mango, avocados, oranges, grapefruits, chirimoya, coconuts, strawberry, maracuya, bread fruit, bamboo (bamboo shoots), macadamia, peach palm (contact), soursop, jackfruit, star fruit and dragon fruit. NO SUGAR. We eat our own chickens and own Tilapia fish.

Learning first hand what sustainability looks like. Out water is directly from the waterfall. Our house in build with fast growing bamboo instead of wood or cement. We have no glass windows just bamboo windows and most doors are recycled or made from bamboo material too. We have recycled many beer and whine bottles for the shower and toilet facility. We have also recycled used tires for stairs and erosion control projects. All our light bulbs are LED so they use a very small amount of power. All our water is from the own creek higher up. One of our showers is heated by black pipes with the sun's rays. All of our grey waste water goes into a banana circle and then a pond. We have composting toilets and use the compost in the garden. We try to be an education center where many people can learn about all these ideas/techniques and how they can apply them in their own homes. We just installed a biodigestor to create methan-gas and liquid biol and non-liquid biol.

    Surrounded by nature
Here you are literally surrounded by nature. We are located at the edge of the Amazonas region in the south of Ecuador with a breathtaking landscape view of the Rio Zamora. The twilight is spectacular on cloudy days. At night you can enjoy listening to the frogs, bats and owls. During the day, if you are lucky enough, you can see eagles very near our bamboo house. Snakes, spiders and mosquitos are a part of the ecosystem here. You can walk around the farm which is about 76 hectares or 180 acres. There are several creeks and waterfalls within the different micro climates of the property.

We have animals, which are part of the family like our 4 dogs and chickens. The dogs job is to protect the property and our chickens so they bark, also at night if there is a animal or a human sneaking around. :-)

We are looking more for LONGTERM Volunteers, minimum stay is 1 month!
We just need someone who likes to be around people has a positive vibration is open minded and likes quiet pure nature. Has no problem to do what we tell you to do and can easily adapt to our "family". It would be nice having someone here who loves to enjoy life. We want someone who asks before acting. For example wen don't want you to sneak around at our food basement without permission. And we don't want you to steal anything!

CHALLENGE - are you ready for the experience?
We will share our daily family farm life in our tropical paradise with you. For most people it will be harder than what they are used to. Are you ready for the challenge? How well do you adapt? Does a holistic organic farm life interest you? Do you care about growing your own food and caring about plants? Do you like to experience how life is when not everything is available - less is worth more. Are you ready to commit for minimum 1 month? Can you survive with very limited WIFI (slow internet just 1 hour a day. Else you can buy a personal CNT-chip $5 =300MB).

Volunteers - Only SERIOUS applicants please. Do not waste your time and ours (!) Volunteer commitment is minimal 1 months. Do not insist on a shorter period. We provide you with three meals / day and accommodation in exchange for your work, 5 hours / day.
