Hello Workawayers, Our Youth Hostel is a Registered Charity and is looking for extra hands this year.
Andrew Hyland the manager and the team : Jenny, Gary, Inga and Sally are working in the 82-bed Hostel located in the beautiful scenery of rural County Wicklow, and surrounded by mountains.
Enniskerry is our nearest village, where the amazing Powerscourt Estate is based. Bray, south of Dublin city, on the coast, is the nearest town. We are looking for help for the everyday running of our Hostel. Our Hostel is multi-functional and takes in large groups of all ages (especially teenage groups) and individual hikers and tourists. The Hostel is located at a staging post along the Wicklow Way trail, a rural mountain Hiking trail and many hikers stay here too. Additionally, we host functions (weddings and birthdays) making it a varied and interesting place to live and work.

Helping with Tourists
Our Hostel is looking for independent individuals to stay with us for an average of 4 weeks. Our location means you must be accustomed to rural independent living, making your own way about and being self-motivated and self-reliant. We prefer volunteers to be 18+ years old and be able to cook, clean and look after oneself. Public-transport is limited to a few daily services and terminates 3 k from the Hostel, so you will need to walk or cycle. Volunteers would use the Hostel as their base in Ireland for exploring/travelling during time off. We ask 20 average hours a week of volunteer's time: which will be: housekeeping/cleaning to a high-standard, gardening, janitorial and basic maintenance. You will be trained in your first few days. Your work-times will be rostered weekly in advance so that you can plan for your time off. We are a busy varied environment with a small hardworking team and we look forward to welcoming you.
You will be accommodated in an en-suite room downstairs in Lackan House (this is the old original Hostel building - the white house to the right in pictures). There will be between 2 and 4 volunteers sharing this room at any one time.
We can't host couples unfortunately.
You will have use of the self catering kitchen.
Breakfast is included (self-service) and dinner on the days we are catering: you will need to self-cater when we are not cooking dinners for guests.
We are 1.5 hours travel time from Dublin City, in the countryside surrounded by mountains. Workawayers could use this as a base for trips and excursions to Dublin and the surrounding counties and take trips to stay at other Hostels in the An Oige chain. It is a good base for a long stay and there is plenty of time off for exploring Ireland and brushing up on English. Enniskerry is our nearest village, 7km away. It is picturesque and home to the famous Powerscourt Estate. Hillwalkers would love our location as we are based ON the Wicklow Way trail. We expect a reasonable standard of conversational English from the outset. Workawayers must be very self-reliant and independent because the remote location of the hostel means you will need to walk to the nearest village - Enniskerry which is 7km away and the nearest public transport to us stops 3km away, a 35-minute walk. Being Ireland, and in the mountains, you must be prepared for bad weather conditions even in mid-summer, so bring wet-weather clothing and boots.
