Live and work with an organization based on the small island of Rusinga, in Western Kenya!! The group provides a variety of services to local orphans and widows, including a daily meal for over thirty children, boarding school scholarships, primary school uniforms, and a safe and comfortable place to play.
Volunteers will experience a beautiful island and a warm community. The pace of Rusinga is much slower than volunteers may be accustomed to, but it takes only a day or two to adjust to and appreciate "island time." Electricity is available, and internet can be accessed in the nearby town of Mbita, just a half hours walk away.
Volunteers will interact with orphans served by the program on a daily basis. They will help cook and serve lunch to the children on school days, and will be expected to teach a handful of lessons at the local primary school, where areas of study may include English, Geography, Maths, Science, etc. Lessons are taught in English and Kiswahili. If the season permits, volunteers may also assist the host in managing his family farm, or other simple tasks around the homestead.

You will live on the compound of a host family, in a cozy, private two-bedroom house. Simple (but delicious!) meals are served to volunteers three times daily, and include dishes such as rice and beans, braised kale, fresh scrambled eggs, lentils, and of course chapati. Seasonal fruits are plentiful, including pineapple, mango, orange and avocado.
We ask that volunteers stay for at least one month, and that you contact us one month in advance to arrange a stay.
More than two
In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
