    Description

Hello! My name is Chykita and I live in Bukit Lawang, a small village on the edge of the tropical rainforest in North Sumatra, home to the incredible Sumatran orangutans and many other amazing wildlife. Together with my uncle Kila Baik, I help manage a small jungle villa surrounded by nature and the peaceful sounds of the forest. My uncle has been a local jungle guide for more than 15 years and works with a wonderful team of guides, porters, and cooks who organize jungle trekking adventures for visitors.
Nature is a big part of our family life. My father runs a small nature organization that regularly plants trees around the forest in Bukit Lawang. He also loves plants, especially orchids, and we have a small greenhouse at our villa where we grow wild jungle orchids and other tropical plants. We also have a small garden with tropical fruits like pineapple, banana, jackfruit, and avocado, which are lovingly taken care of by my grandfather. We truly enjoy meeting travelers, sharing our culture and stories, and learning from people from around the world. Our dream is to promote sustainable tourism and environmental education that supports the local community and helps protect the rainforest for future generations.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

In exchange, you will stay with us at our villa, enjoy local traditional meals, immerse yourself in the local culture, and have the chance to explore the jungle and meet the wildlife. We would love to share everything we know about the jungle and why it is so special to us here in Bukit Lawang. This village is rich in culture for you to experience: outside our villa, you can play with local children in the river – there are markets and live music every week – plenty of Indonesian food to try – cooking and wood carving classes – and if you're lucky, we can take you to a traditional Indonesian wedding!

We are looking for friendly and open-minded Workawayers who would like to experience authentic jungle life in Bukit Lawang while spending time with our small family community surrounded by nature.
Staying with us means waking up to the sounds of the rainforest, enjoying the river, and experiencing the peaceful atmosphere of the jungle. During your stay you will also join a jungle trekking adventure in the beautiful rainforest of Bukit Lawang. The trekking is organized by our local guiding team and is a great way to learn about the rainforest ecosystem, wildlife, and the importance of protecting this unique environment. Like other visitors, there is a standard contribution for the trekking experience, which helps support the local guides, porters, and operational costs of the trekking team.
Volunteers can also help with English practice for local children once a week (around one hour) at a nearby school. Transport can be arranged with a small contribution of 50,000 IDR to help cover the local driver’s fuel and time.
You may also spend some time helping in our tropical garden together with my grandfather, taking care of plants and fruit trees like banana, pineapple, jackfruit, and avocado while enjoying the jungle atmosphere.
More than work, this is a cultural exchange, where we share stories, culture, and simple jungle living together.
    Maximum stay: 2 weeks.
