my name is Peter (I'm from Belgium) and together with my Lao wife Manichan, we're running a private International pre-school located in the World Heritage city of Luang Prabang, in Laos, South-East Asia. Our new school building is settled in a green environment with a huge playground.
In total there are 50 children at our school, aged between 2 and 5 years, divided over 4 class rooms, so maximum 15 children per class. Most children have Lao as a first language and come to our school to learn some basic English as a second language. There are 6 Lao teachers, they stay continuously in the classroom. The children have 1 hour of intense English class per day, taught by an ESL teacher who goes around teaching every class one hour a day.
The school starts at 8 am and closes at 4.30pm.
We're looking for volunteering ESL pre-school teachers, preferably with experience, to assist our English teacher or to teach independently, depending on the situation and the skills of the volunteer. Since the job needs some training, knowledge of all the materials and building up a relationship with the children, we want the volunteer to stay for a period of minimum 5 weeks. Professional pre-school teachers could be accepted for shorter periods. Work hours are during weekdays from 8.30am till 4pm, but with a long break between noon and 3pm. The volunteer should have some knowledge of language games and learning activities for this age group, which is more important then "Teaching English experience". So we're not particularly looking for English teachers, but rather for pre-school teachers. The school has plenty of materials, activity, pre-writing & writing books and we provide some extra teacher training, in particular some Montessori training books and videos. So, Montessori experience is hugely appreciated.
Practical : we can accommodate you at the school (if you prefer to stay in a guesthouse or hostel, we'd sponsor 5$ a day/per volunteer) and provide breakfasts and lunches during the week. For dinners and during weekends, you'd have to take care of yourself... easy to find 2$ meals in the town..
We're located just out of town. We can lend you a bicycle, sometimes a motorbike, so you can explore Luang Prabang during your free-time.
My family, with 2 children and 2 housekeepers live at the school building as well.
Take note that that the volunteer should follow the proper dress code of a teacher (as opposed to the dress code of a tourist). We also expect the volunteer to take good care of his/her body (hair, nails, teeth, body odour, etc..) and to cover any tattoos. Obviously, smoking and drinking alcohol during working hours is forbidden. Education start with giving a good example.
