  We are a community association located in San Sebastián Huehuetenango, Guatemala. We work alongside more than 400 Mam Maya women in economic and social empowerment processes. Our approach combines strengthening cultural identity with sustainable productive initiatives such as sheep farming, fruit tree cultivation, vermicompost production, and a solidarity microcredit fund for individual and collective enterprises.
  
  Our mission is to generate opportunities that contribute to the well-being of women and their families, promoting community organization, female leadership, and economic autonomy.
  
  We value the participation of volunteers who wish to contribute their knowledge, creativity, and energy to an enriching intercultural exchange. Those who join us have the opportunity to live alongside Mam Mayan communities, learn about their worldview, and contribute directly to the development of projects with real impact.
  
  Volunteering with us is a 100% Guatemalan and conscious experience. It is not about tourist volunteering or comfort, but about experiencing firsthand the reality that Mayan women and their families face in their daily lives. It is an opportunity to connect deeply with the community, understand their challenges, and share lessons learned with respect and solidarity.
  
  During your volunteer work, you will also have the opportunity to visit the communities where we work, share with women's groups, and learn about their form of organization. Although the women's main language is Mam (a Mayan language), a basic level of Spanish is sufficient for everyday communication. You do not need advanced proficiency, but it will be important to be able to speak and understand the essentials. This will allow for a closer, warmer, and more meaningful experience for both you and the communities.

  Somos una asociación de mujeres comunitaria ubicada en San Sebastián Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Trabajamos junto a más de 400 mujeres mayas Mam en procesos de empoderamiento económico y social. Nuestro enfoque combina el fortalecimiento de la identidad cultural con iniciativas productivas sostenibles como la cría de ovejas, el cultivo de árboles frutales, la producción de lombricompost y un fondo solidario de microcréditos para emprendimientos individuales y colectivos.
  
  Nuestra misión es generar oportunidades que contribuyan al bienestar de las mujeres y sus familias, fomentando la organización comunitaria, el liderazgo femenino y la autonomía económica.
  
  Valoramos la participación de personas voluntarias que deseen aportar sus conocimientos, creatividad y energía en un intercambio intercultural enriquecedor. Quienes nos acompañan tienen la oportunidad de convivir con comunidades mayas Mam, aprender de su cosmovisión y contribuir directamente al desarrollo de proyectos con impacto real.
  
  El voluntariado con nosotras es una experiencia 100% guatemalteca y consciente. No se trata de un voluntariado turístico ni de comodidad, sino de vivir de cerca la realidad que enfrentan las mujeres mayas y sus familias en su día a día. Es una oportunidad para conectar profundamente con la comunidad, comprender sus desafíos y compartir aprendizajes desde el respeto y la solidaridad.
  
  Durante tu voluntariado también tendrás la oportunidad de visitar las comunidades donde trabajamos, compartir con los grupos de mujeres y conocer su forma de organización. Aunque el idioma principal de las mujeres es el Mam (un idioma maya), para la comunicación cotidiana es suficiente contar con un nivel básico de español. No necesitas un dominio avanzado, pero sí será importante poder hablar y entender lo esencial. Esto permitirá una experiencia más cercana, cálida y significativa tanto para ti como para las comunidades.

  Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

  You will have the opportunity to live an authentic cultural exchange experience in our Mam Mayan communities in Guatemala. You will be able to learn directly from us, the women and our families, about our way of life, our community organization, and our worldview, which is deeply respectful of nature and the community.
  
  Through daily interaction, you will learn about our local cuisine, participate in productive activities such as sheep farming, fruit tree cultivation, and vermicomposting, and discover cultural traditions unique to our region. You will also learn basic words in the Mam language, as well as improve your Spanish in a practical, everyday environment.
  
  Beyond the productive aspect, you will benefit from connecting with a reality different from that of your countries of origin, developing skills of flexibility, empathy, and resilience. This experience will allow you not only to contribute your knowledge, but also to gain a broader view of community life, solidarity, and the value of our cultural identity.

  Tendrán la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia de intercambio cultural auténtico en nuestras comunidades mayas Mam de Guatemala. Podrán aprender directamente de nosotras, las mujeres y nuestras familias, sobre nuestra forma de vida, nuestra organización comunitaria y nuestra cosmovisión, que es profundamente respetuosa con la naturaleza y con la comunidad.
  
  A través de la convivencia diaria, podrán conocer nuestra gastronomía local, participar en actividades productivas como la cría de ovejas, el cultivo de árboles frutales o el lombricompostaje, y descubrir tradiciones culturales propias de nuestra región. También aprenderán palabras básicas en idioma mam, además de mejorar su español en un entorno práctico y cotidiano.
  
  Más allá de lo productivo, se beneficiarán al conectar con una realidad distinta a la de sus países de origen, desarrollando habilidades de flexibilidad, empatía y resiliencia. Esta experiencia les permitirá no solo aportar sus conocimientos, sino también llevarse una visión más amplia sobre la vida comunitaria, la solidaridad y el valor de nuestra identidad cultural.

  Help

  In our Association, activities are always changing and adapting to the needs of the moment. This can be very different from the culture of other countries, where everything unfolds exactly as planned. In Guatemala, as in much of Latin America, reality is dynamic and often requires flexibility and creativity to adjust activities on the fly. Therefore, it is important that our volunteers arrive with an open mind and a willingness to adapt, understanding that each week may be different from the last.
  
  We greatly appreciate it when volunteers propose new activities, as we do not have a fixed structure for volunteering and need support to strengthen the organization of our activities.
  
  Some of the areas in which you can collaborate are:
  
  -Driving a vehicle (pilot/driver)
  -Social media management (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
  -Creating content for our website and social media
  -Editing videos and photographs
  -Knowledge of recycling and green building
  -Agricultural consulting
  -Painting murals or the building
  -Facilitating recreational and artistic workshops with women and young people
  -General building maintenance (cleaning, organization, etc.)
  -Teaching practical workshops on teleworking (accounting, human rights, gender, among others)
  
  We believe that the best experience is built when volunteering is dynamic, creative, and flexible. With us, you will have the opportunity to contribute your talents in different areas, while experiencing an authentic exchange with the community.

  En nuestra Asociación las actividades siempre están cambiando y adaptándose a las necesidades del momento. Esto puede ser muy diferente a la cultura de otros países, donde todo se desarrolla exactamente como se planifica. En Guatemala, como en gran parte de América Latina, la realidad es dinámica y muchas veces requiere flexibilidad y creatividad para ajustar las actividades sobre la marcha. Por eso, es importante que nuestros voluntarios lleguen con apertura y disposición para adaptarse, entendiendo que cada semana puede ser distinta a la anterior.
  
  Valoramos mucho que cada voluntario pueda también proponer actividades nuevas, ya que no contamos con una estructura fija para el voluntariado y necesitamos apoyo para fortalecer la organización de nuestras actividades.
  
  Algunas de las áreas en las que puedes colaborar son:
  
  -Conducir vehículo (piloto/conductor)
  -Manejo de redes sociales (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
  -Creación de contenido para nuestra página web y redes sociales
  -Edición de videos y fotografías
  -Conocimientos en reciclaje y bioconstrucción
  -Asesoría agropecuaria
  -Pintura de murales o del edificio
  -Facilitación de talleres lúdicos y artísticos con mujeres y jóvenes
  -Mantenimiento general del edificio (limpieza, organización, etc.)
  -Impartición de talleres prácticos sobre teletrabajo (contabilidad, derechos humanos, género, entre otros)

  Accommodation

  Our Association has a complete space to welcome volunteers: bedrooms, showers, bathrooms, equipped kitchen, offices, a multipurpose room, and internet access (Wi-Fi) in all areas. The headquarters is located in San Sebastián Huehuetenango, just a 5-minute walk from the town's central park, where you can easily access food at the local market, shops, squares, and dining rooms.
  
  Most volunteers stay in the house-office, which also serves as the heart of our daily activities. From here, we sometimes visit nearby communities or the mountains, allowing volunteers to have closer experiences with nature and local families.
  
  In addition, there is the option of living with a local family for a more immersive experience. Details about this option are shared once volunteers apply and confirm their interest.

  Nuestra Asociación cuenta con un espacio completo para recibir a voluntarios: dormitorios, duchas, baños, cocina equipada, oficinas, un salón de usos múltiples y acceso a internet (wifi) en todas las áreas. La sede está ubicada en San Sebastián Huehuetenango, a tan solo 5 minutos caminando del parque central del pueblo, donde se puede acceder fácilmente a alimentos en el mercado local, tiendas, plazas y comedores.
  
  La mayoría de voluntarios se alojan en la casa-oficina, que también funciona como el corazón de nuestras actividades diarias. Desde aquí, en ocasiones se realizan visitas a comunidades cercanas o a las montañas, lo que permite vivir experiencias más cercanas con la naturaleza y las familias.
  
  Además, existe la opción de vivir con una familia local para una experiencia más inmersiva. Los detalles sobre esta modalidad se comparten una vez que los voluntarios aplican y confirman su interés.

  What else ...

  Volunteering with us takes place Monday through Friday at times that accommodate each volunteer's availability, during which volunteers participate in various community activities and projects. Weekends are free, offering the opportunity to explore and enjoy the region at your own pace.
  
  During your free time, you can visit other nearby towns and experience the local culture firsthand. One of the most spectacular experiences is climbing to the viewpoint in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, a mountain range that reaches the height of a volcano, from where, depending on the weather, you can see more than 6 volcanoes in Guatemala.
  
  It is also possible to take a day trip to Quetzaltenango, the second largest city in the country, which is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes by bus from our organization. There you can enjoy the architecture, markets, cuisine, and cultural life of a more urban Guatemalan city.
  
  This combination of productive volunteer work and free time to explore, discover nature, and learn about the local culture makes the experience complete, enriching, and authentically Guatemalan.

  El voluntariado con nosotras se desarrolla de lunes a viernes en horarios que se acomodan a la disponibilidad de cada voluntario, durante los cuales los voluntarios participan en las diversas actividades y proyectos comunitarios. Los fines de semana son libres, ofreciendo la oportunidad de explorar y disfrutar de la región a su propio ritmo.
  
  Durante su tiempo libre, podrán visitar otros pueblos cercanos y conocer la cultura local de primera mano. Una de las experiencias más espectaculares es subir al mirador en la Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, una cadena montañosa que alcanza la altura de un volcán, desde donde, dependiendo del clima, se pueden observar más de 6 volcanes de Guatemala.
  
  También es posible hacer una excursión de un día a Quetzaltenango, la segunda ciudad más grande del país, que se encuentra a aproximadamente 2 horas y 30 minutos en bus desde nuestra organización. Allí podrán disfrutar de la arquitectura, mercados, gastronomía y vida cultural de una ciudad guatemalteca más urbana.
  
  Esta combinación de voluntariado productivo y tiempo libre para explorar, conocer la naturaleza y la cultura local hace que la experiencia sea completa, enriquecedora y auténticamente guatemalteca.
