Description
My husband Mitchell, spirit son Josh, and I live in the quaint and charming community of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba—a 45-minute drive west of Winnipeg.
We are co-founders and organizers of a vibrant, non-profit music and arts festival that takes place on our 2-hectare, private woodlot at the end of August, only 5 km from town. The festival is truly a community event, where volunteers, partner organizations, musical performers, artists, and music lovers come together to celebrate each year.
We are also stewards to a 19-hectare forest ecosystem (2 km from our home site). This second property has nature trails, fruit trees and agricultural land, wetland, and a variety of trees from around the world.
Together, the three of us do organic gardening on both properties, and enjoy producing food from a mix of raised beds, row gardens, and hugelkultur during the growing season (from planting in May to harvest in October). The produce we need help growing on our two properties is for personal use only and not for sale and Workawayers will not be directly involved with paying guests and visitors.
The festival, gardening, and management of both properties give us a lot of purpose, while also requiring extra assistance from a special, likeminded individual who is open to experiencing the joys of adventure, nature, gardening, music, and culture with us.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
The festival in itself is a cultural exchange, where helpers can enjoy participating in a community event with local musicians and experiences. Getting to enjoy the outdoors in rural Manitoba on two scenic properties, both within minutes of lakes, trails, and nature sites and a picturesque prairie town, is a way to become familiar with a new place and surroundings. Learning or honing practical, hands-on skills (both independent and team building) and spending time together doing projects is a great way to experience summer in Manitoba. We'd love being able to share our passions for music, nature, and gardening with you, and hear your story along the way.

Registered charity
This host is a registered charity in their country and is looking for volunteers to help with their project(s).

Help
The main help we would welcome includes assistance with festival production and preparation (i.e. site maintenance, stage set-up, fencing, etc.); organic gardening and food production (i.e. weeding garden beds, compost and soil building, harvesting, processing, etc.); and property maintenance at both properties (i.e. pruning, trail maintenance, grass cutting, organizing storage sheds, etc.). We are welcoming an individual who is open to learning, enjoys being outdoors, and has a strong work ethic.

Accommodation
Helpers would stay in a 26' RV-style camping trailer with a kitchenette, small washroom with shower, quaint living quarters, and a private bedroom on our scenic, 2-hectare woodlot. Groceries will be provided for the helper to prepare in the trailer; we will go shopping together and share meals in the house on site from time to time. A bicycle will be provided, and if international applicants have an international driver's license, use of a truck can be offered.
