  • Description

    Hello, workawayers!

Surrounded by the hilly forest of Fruška gora and close to the city of Novi Sad, Serbia, our project is an intentional community in its beginnings.

As this year brings lots of planned ideas to be put into practice, we are happy to open our volunteering opportunities again and welcome you on board ;)

We are a family-based group of 8 people of different ages, who live and work together, with the vision of creating an eco-friendly, regenerative space, that can host different events and projects, in eco-tourism, art, and culture, non - formal education kids and adults, permaculture and food, and generally of wellbeing, while trying to respect nature’s wellbeing as well. We named this space - Šumska 1 (forest street no.1).

A part of the purpose of the space is an Eco = Bed & breakfast, that is getting close to being ready to host guests in the rooms that we, together with volunteers that came to join us, made out of earth, wood, straw, and sand and water.

During the summer we will have a few events happening too, one is a youth exchange between Serbian and Swiss young people around the theme of natural building and another one is on stage arts.

In Šumska are at the moment Goran and Goga, during the week, Filip and Ana join them for the weekends..the rest of us hosts (Iva, Alvise, kids) arrives in mid-May. Currently there are 5 other volunteers from different countries (the number of volunteers is usually around 5-6).

    - Volunteering opportunities -

    1. BUILDING TEAM (open NOW)

    Tasks in the coming months:
making mud-made walls for summer kitchen, garden pond with grey-water system, making shelves for storage spaces, building outdoor stairs, setting up fence and entrance gate, making paths around the garden, finishing indoor bathroom, re-doing stairs to the terrace, finishing up outside hygiene corners (showers, another compost toilet, floor area), re-painting the house and similar works.

We are searching for you guys who are experienced in work with wood and natural materials, and/or you guys with practical mind, wishing to learn about it while helping out.
Experience in using the working tools and machines is appreciated :)

    2. KITCHEN TEAM (From mid-April and on)

We will be around 20 people (hosts and volunteers) during the spring and summer, and Goga, our mama and a vegan cook, will need help in the kitchen team, for chopping veggies, helping with cooking, washing pots and dishes afterward.

We are looking for people who love vegan cooking and have some experience in it.

    3. GARDEN TEAM (from mid-April and on)

Tasks: Working in our three little gardens: preparing the gardens, planting, weeding, watering and taking care of the plants, cutting grass and green fences.

Here we are looking for people who are into organic gardening and permaculture to help us design and set our experimental gardens.

    4. MARKETING TEAM (From May and on)

Content creation (photography and video, writing), Social media posting and Website blog.

It would be great if you speak good English and Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian, and have already done online marketing, if you have an eye and skills for making nice photos and videos, as wells as writing shorter stories that resonate Šumska atmosphere.

    5. KIDS TEAM (from June and on)

Playing with and taking care of our two little boys (3.5 y.o Noah and 2 y.o Eliah).
We are also slowly starting the process of opening a forest kindergarten and school, so we will be organising a gathering of small group of little kids in the forest, and we will need your presence in this team as well :)

We call out for people who are passionate about self-directed learning, democratic education and forest school education, who are confident and trustful of the children's capacities to explore the world in their own ways, bringing guidance and support when needed.

*Taking care of the communal space - the house and the garden is on all of us who are sharing the space.

    * The preferred stay for the volunteers is 1 month, as it takes time to get to know the people, the place and the project, and have a sense of the community life.

    We love eating together!

Food is diverse, even tough plant-based ( vegan ), and is made mainly by Goga, our food master 🥗
She does need a helping hand from someone who is into cooking too. Are you? :)

  • What else ...

    What else ...

In morning hours we are usually focusing on building and other team works.

In the afternoons, evenings and two week days (usually Sundays and Mondays) space is free for either building to continue, or for other interesting and inspiring things to happen.

Everyone is welcomed to bring and share a skill, or a workshop, a talk, a walk with the rest of the group, using the Open Space board.

Until now we have been enjoying diverse activities that volunteers have brought to the whole group: Yoga morning stretch, or tai chi, walkings in the woods, foraging, juggling, dancing, cooking, talking, music impro around the fire, watching and discussing good movies, silent hours/day…
