We are now into the second year of creating our home away from home, or ‘homestel’ if you will. Throughout the last year we've had the pleasure of having quite a few volunteers come through our gate and we have learned a lot from each and every one. Now we and the community are certainly benefiting from their influences and help :) The last year has also been extremely challenging - being in a country that seems to be completely opposite that which you grew up with is very frustrating at times, especially when it comes to equality; the environment and animal welfare. We feel volunteers can benefit from learning about Sri Lanka and our specific area through our wonderful community members. For example our local temples hamaduru (monk) always loves having company and teaching people about Buddhism.
Our family consists during the high season of 1 local full-time cook, 1 full-time cleaner and 1 full-time coordinator. During low/ off season we switch to roommate style community living and have 1 full-time cleaner.
This being said we are in a stage where we need help, there are a lot of amazing things that could be done in this country in terms of sustainability and we have come to the conclusion that we really need to find the right fit when it comes to volunteers.
We are currently looking for people to stay long term (MINIMUM ONE MONTH); if it's a fit for everyone then we would love people to stay longer!
You will need to have skills and a passion in:
Social media- You must love taking photos/ video and creating content for Instagram/ Facebook and maintaining our website
Healthy inspired cooking- we have an AWESOME local cook that is a sponge when it comes to learning new things and we want to help teach him new skills
Organization- we are in need of an super clean freak that likes everything in it's place and can create systems/ processes in their sleep to help us get organized.
We have a small hostel located in the south Coast which is just a couple of minutes walk from some amazing beaches (one of the prime Surf spots on the South coast) and a quick 10 minute bus/scooter ride to multiple other surf breaks for beginners and intermediates. The town is mega chilled; the locals are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. I don’t think you could ever get bored of the sunsets!
We try to make people feel like they are part of a home and offer our guests home cooked meals or the ability to prepare uncooked food in our communal kitchen. We have tried to create a cosy space where guests can hang out, play games, read books and meet other travellers. The location is in a quiet neighbourhood just 10m from the beach but off from the main road so it is still quiet. We are lucky to have some amazing neighbours and we can say that we are part of an awesome community that is very friendly and helpful.
One of the things we love about travelling is meeting new people from different parts of the world and we hope to create a space that travellers can stay and feel like they've stayed at someone’s welcoming home. We are very passionate about the environment, animal welfare and equality and hope to be part of growing sustainable tourism here through leading by example and giving back to the community.
VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: We have dogs & cats so our volunteers MUST LOVE ANIMALS and be comfortable to help with the not so fun jobs that go with them - feed them and pick up their "mess" once in a while.
Low season is April – October (and it rains a lot but not as bad as what people say) so be aware that there many local places (shops, restaurants, surf shacks) shut for a few months May through to July, before it starts picking up again in August. If quiet is what you are after then great, but if you are up for a bit more bustle then bear this in mind and come during the ‘high’ season.
During this low season I am looking for somebody who is happy to do their own thing for much of the day as we will be shut down and preparing for the new season. Together, we will be looking at strategies for the effective running of the place and improving our social media outreach. Guests had a great time staying here last year and we had daily yoga and several weekly activities. We want to improve our program all round and are excited about what is to come!
Busy (high) season: October- April (very busy with tourists) surf shacks are working and the weather is mostly hot & sunny. We are looking for sociable, outgoing and confident people who are chatty with the guests and keen to get to know the local area and community.
If this sounds like it would suit you then I would love to hear from you! Please send me a message and we can take it from there.
NOTE: It is illegal to work with a tourist visa in Sri Lanka- we are not looking for workers, we are looking for new friends to come help our house and our community becomes a better place :)
