    Hi, I’m Bas the Skipper/owner of my traditional sailing passenger ship, Klipper Mermaid. I’m look for deckhand for the season of 2024 who will assist me sailing on the Dutch Waddensea. We trying to give our guests a wonderful holiday.

    So in short we are looking for a hard working guy/girl who love's to be outside.
    You need to be a EU citizen or you have a working visa for The Netherlands.

    You will work with guest from all Europe on a tratitional sailing ship. The ship build in 1907 and her home port is Harlingen. Together we sail the ship and keep her in nice shape.

    I am looking for a deckhand (sailor/deck manager) for the the ship.

    What does this job entail?

    We sail on the most beautiful nature reserve in the Netherlands, namely the Wadden Sea. We do this together with our guests. This varies from school classes to friends/acquaintances or from associations to companies. The goal is to provide guests with a great experience!

    As a mate, you will ensure that the sails go up together with the guests and you will also assist the skipper during maneuvering in the harbor so that we can leave and arrive safely.

    What do we look for in a candidate?

    - You need to be EU citizen or have EU working visa
    - You are between 18 and 35 years old.
    - You are prepared to be away from home for a longer period of time. A minimum of 4 months
    -Sailing experience is not required but a bonus.
    - You are a team player.
    - You don't have a 9 to 5 mentality.
    - You speak the german language. English is an advantage.
    - You are willing to do a medical examination (this will be reimbursed by us).
    - you can start from half march / april
    - we have a zero tolerance- drugs policy

    A little side note,

    Unfortunately the regulations to become deckhand has changed in The Netherlands. This means if you want to become a deckhand after 1 April 2023 you need to follow an external training. We are open to pay for this training but there are some conditions. The most important one is that you’re open to stay onboard for 4 months.

    The ship 36 meters long. You will have your own cabin with toilet and sink. On the back of the ship there is shared living for the skipper and deckhand. We have or own kitchen and big bathroom. Food and drinks are all included onboard. Mostly we eat together with our guests.

    Free internet is onboard.
    We mostly work 32 hours a week this depends every week sometimes we stay several days in the same harbor and other days we make a long sailing trip. But we will make sure that get enough resting hours so can also experience the Dutch island.
    On turn around days deckhand responsibility is make sure that deck is clean and organized and sometimes help the cleaners inside the ship. Mostly we have 2 turn around days a week.
