    Description

We are a family of four living in Akureyri in the north of Iceland.
Unnur (31) is from a farm in the west and works as a geologist doing both desk work and field work. She also teaches violin. Her hours are usually flexible. She speaks fluent English and Danish.
Stefan (36) is a philosopher and works for Vatnajokull National Park. He works mostly from home in the winter time but in the summer time his work is in the eastern part of the country and in the highlands and mostly involves presenting the Icelandic highlands to visitors. Stefan speaks English and French fluently and a tiny bit of Danish.
Steinþóra Anna (3) is a headstrong but sweet little girl with a big sense of humor and a keen interest in almost everything. Páll Aðalsteinn (19 months) is a calm and charming little boy.
Our hobbies are mostly related to the outdoors: hiking, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, climbing, swimming and biking. We are both strongly related to the countryside with family in different farms around the country. We grow vegetables in a small plot close to our house and tomatoes and chilies indoors. We enjoy cooking, music and culture.
We've been building a home in the last year and will be moving into it in February 2023. We have a guest room with a separate bathroom.

Both kids are at kindergarten except for the summer holidays between the 10th of July and 8th of August.

Our day to day life is full of adventure with lots of travel, activities and visiting interesting parts of the country. We both have large extended families which we are very close to.
Akureyri is lovely little town of 19000 people with a lot of cultural events, cafés, outdoor areas and many possibilities for different activities. Our guest will have plenty of opportunity to discover our country both with us and independently.

    Help

We are mainly looking for someone to help with the kids, both at home and while travelling around the country for work and visiting family. There will still be some work to be done for our new home where we might ask for some help. Driver's license is a plus but we will provide a bicycle. A good proficiency in English is a requirement. An ability to be independent and show initiative is a plus.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Our new home in Akureyri has a guest room and a spare bathroom attached. When travelling around the country we will either stay with extended family or in our summer house in the east, close to Egilsstaðir. If our guest would like to accompany Stefan and the kids to the highlands at some point we would be staying in mountain huts.
We mostly cook from home and we have a rather diverse diet, including lots of vegetables, meat and fish, but we are also rather fond of good pizzas and pasta dishes. Stefan doesn't eat meat but the rest of the family eats everything. Our guest is welcome to share meals with the family but any special needs concerning food can also be met with. We are very open to trying different cuisines and our guest is very welcome to introduce us to some new meals.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our guest is welcome to enjoy everything Akureyri and its surroundings has to offer in their time off and we will help organizing if needed. Buses drive regularly, both inside and outside of Akureyri. Our guest is also welcome to have a bike, and borrow our car if driving licence is available.
Both of us have traveled around the world, and we have both lived abroad. We both have experience sharing a home with people from different cultures and backgrounds and our group of friends includes many nationalities. We hope this experience makes us better equipped to understand the needs of our guest.
We both have a rather active lifestyle with a lot of projects and hobbies, but we also like relaxing and enjoying the quiet times with our family.
