    Description

We are a couple from Italy and the UK that left behind our careers as engineers spending 9 hours in front of a screen in Bristol, UK to embrace a slow living attitude in Sao Jorge, Azores back in May 2024. We are now dedicating to a personal permaculture project on our 2000m2 of land. We are at the start of our journey with so much to learn from nature and people's experiences, we are not doing it for profit just to learn how to become more self sufficient. The work is varied and all-rounded if you are of a proactive and caring character it should feel like no work at all! The island offers peace and grounding, please get in touch if this resonates with you and together we can come up with a tailored agenda that balances between your skills and interests, and the works needed around the property.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

The work on the farm and construction work will mostly be carried out together, although the suited applicant should have the ability to carry out work independently and proactively (meaning that we don't want to micromanage you and your time, we would much rather you had the eyes to find work that needs doing by yourself and just check with us before getting started).

We are always experimenting - since we lack experience, having just gotten started - we adopt local ancient practices to avoid using pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers as well as permaculture principles and always have our ears perked to hear from others! We see this as a mutual exchange between host and workawayers so we hope to learn from you as much as possible and we wish you to leave with a deeper appreciation for nature, these islands and a more rural and less hectic approach to life.

When we get the chance we will show you the places we most love around the island and if the weather permits we can go out with a little fishing boat we own. We have a Westfalia Volkswagen caravan we started renting to discover the island as well as the neighbouring ones since you can move between them with a ferry, if you are interested you can rent it at a discounted price.

Furthermore, we are working on a community project to make food an opportunity to bring the community together and foster integration of the people that moved on the island to live and work. This project should hopefully start this Autumn and the workawayers next year will have the opportunity to help if they are interested, it will be a interesting melting pot of recipes, cultures and ways of cooking. What a better way to interact with the locals?!

  • Help

    Help

We would like help around the garden. This is highly season dependent but it is likely to include sowing seeds, taking care of seedlings, planting seedlings, de-weeding, watering the plants and harvesting the vegetables.

Collecting eggs and cleaning the chickens beds. Make sure there is water and food for them to eat.

Kitchen as a playground - we believe a lot can be shared behind the stove. We typically receive food orders for lasagnas and other Italian dishes and we go to the local Saturday markets to sell out produce, kombuchas and ginger beers we make. Over the week, we spend a reasonable amount of time in our humble kitchen outside making concoctions and experimenting. We are always eager to learn other recipes and other methods of cooking, so you preparing a meal or helping us out would be an invaluably enriching experience for us!

    Accommodation

Guest room in the house, we currently have a single bed set up but we can arrange alternative solutions for a couple or for friends.

We aim to eat as much as possible from what our vegetable garden produces, the workawayers are welcome to reap the same fruits and vegetables!

When we are at home we will be cooking for everyone that is around and we hope that you might like to reciprocate so we can take it in turns at the hob (ingredients provided by us :))
