* We have 1 paid position available! Will you become our new sous-chef with the intention of becoming our head chef in 2021? * Our colourful creative kitchen serves an abundant vegan buffet with vegetarian options. We work together with local farmers and serve 80% organic meals. The work is seasonal: lots of work from april - sept. Less in winter, with possibility of 2-3 months off in january + february.
Are you an experienced chef and you are interested in committing long-term (2-3 years) for a sous-chef or chef position on the Swedish Countryside, write us a message with your CV and motivation and we are happy to send more information! We would like to know: what do you love to cook? For how many people you can cook independently and if you have experience in leading a team of cooks (and up to how many people). Also: your experience in budget, hygiene, planning and leading teamwork. Just for me to make an estimation of your skill set and what you would like to learn. You don't have to be proficient at all these things, being a hard worker with a positive can-do attitude and love for learning and beautiful food is what matters most. The rest we are happy to teach the rest.
* All other work described below is on a volunteer basis (accommodation & meals, no payment) *
Dear workAwayers! We're looking for happy, excited and nice people to help out at our Sustainable Retreat and Cultural Center in Southern Sweden (3 hours with a direct train from Copenhagen or Gothenburg). Our mission is to empower people to make a positive change in society towards more sustainable living, personal development, creativity, health and leadership. We're home to many kinds of courses, educations and festivals in the areas of mindfulness, yoga, personal development, music and human potential.
Many people are searching for practical and intellectual knowledge and skills for new ways of working and living more sustainable, peacefully and community driven. We are a platform where we can meet to learn from each other, knowledgeable teachers and be inspired by the sustainable foundation of the center itself.
All our volunteer work is done through our non-profit association for forest work, arts and gardening.
> Building a beautiful and abundant organic garden with flowers & vegetables
> Forest preservation projects: Making walking paths, planting leafy trees and fruit trees, making a mindfulness garden
> Creating music productions about peace and sustainability
The project started 20 years ago with fixing up a small countryside house. Even though we've grown, we're still small and personal with a staff of 6 people (based on and close to the site). Our buildings are made with different ecological materials and techniques (like haybale, historical log building, hemp and recycled materials). Our food is 80% organic and we collaborate with many local farmers. Also we are starting grow our own organic vegetables with sustainable methods, like permaculture. We're located in the midst of forest with little lakes, goats and lots of walking paths in the surroundings.
And outside? We are only 1 hour away by train from beautiful Karlskrona with it's UNESCO world heritage archipelago at the Baltic Sea. Also 1 hour away is Kalmar and it's connection Öland. Lots of culture, castles and beautiful natural places to discover in both these cities at the sea.
We're looking forward to meet you and create beautiful work, lasting memories and a great time together!

What do you get in return for your good work?
> The opportunity to spend time in the beautiful surroundings: forest, little lakes, sauna. We have a tower that overlooks the forests all around, a reflection labyrinth and lots of forest walking paths.
> You learn about (organic) gardening, vegan/organic cooking, eco building and the general workings of an eco educational center. In the main season (july & august) every week one person off the staff will give a 1-2 hour inspirational workshop in one of their areas of expertise: from meditation to cooking, from shiatsu massage to leadership.
> You'll meet cool new people, make great memories and contribute to the values of creativity, sustainability and personal development we practice. We're super happy and grateful for the input we have received from a wide community of wonderful people.
> With some retreats/festivals you will be able to participate in part of the program. But this depends on each separate event. This is always in dialogue with the volunteer coordinator (Stephanie).
This host offers accommodation and payment.
We are searching for all-round volunteer heroes!
These are the areas of Volunteering:
> Garden: We have started growing organic vegetables at our center. The first growing beds and the green house are in the making. We'll be growing sallads, herbs, flowers, vegetables. There are lots of things to learn and do. Like building growing beds, tending to plants, harvesting, working with compost, making fences, etc. We use different methods, like raised growing beds, a smart greenhouse with a 'thermal battery' for a longer growing season. All with recycled materials and low energy processes. Sometimes we also have guest horses or goats.
> Forest Preservation Projects: we have a lot of forest around the center that we wish to preserve and protect. A lot of trees are cut in the wood industry, but we would really like to preserve mature trees and increase the diversity and natural beauty of the area. This is why we preserve the forest and also have started planting more fruit trees and leafy trees. We also made walking paths and a mindfulness garden, so people can enjoy nature and silence. In the Forest projects you plant trees, maintain and make walking paths, make signs, etc.
> Music productions for peace and sustainability. The founders of our project have a long history of Music and Culture for peace. This includes musicals about immigration, international peace songs and inviting interesting and idealist international artists. For us music is a way to create community and a positive message into the world. In 2019 we would love to start more Storytelling through our music (through film and podcasts)
You're into nature, you're social and you think sustainable! You have a passion for learning and you are solution-oriented. You are happy to meet other people and caring and communicate. We love to hear about your interests in one or more of the above fields! Whether you are an expert or a beginner :)
We're not a party place! (no drugs, no alcohol), but we have lots of opportunity for you to enjoy beautiful forest walks, meditation, swimming, sauna. When we have events going on there are many people around. Sometimes it can also be more quiet. These are perfect time to rest and enjoy the surroundings or plan a nice trip.
We have a 25-hour week, with 2 days off a week (often mon-tue or tue/wed). In general you help 5 hours a day, sometimes it might be 4 days each between 5-7 hours. We make sure that every day you have a stretch of free time to enjoy the place and the surroundings. We do not exclude on age, but in general we aim for people between 20-35 years old. We prefer people who wish to stay 1-3 months.
You'll share a double room in the Volunteer House. In the Volunteer House you'll live with 3-6 volunteers, all working in different areas. You share the bathroom, toilet, small kitchen and (outside) hangout space. We also have tent space for those who wish to come with their own tent.
You have access to the beautiful workshop spaces when they are not in use by guests (as long as you keep them nice and tidy). We provide ingredients for making your own breakfast, plus we serve a mostly organic vegan/vegetarian lunch and dinner each day + coffee & tea. On days between events, you prepare your own meals in the Volunteer House. We provide ingredients. If you have allergies, let us know :)
There are bikes available to explore the area: there are some larger lakes around, differents forests and nice second hand shops. We are also happy to pick you up or drop you off at the Emmaboda train station. From there it is a 30-40 minute train ride to the nice seaside towns of Karlskrona (UNESCO Heritage and Archipelago) and Kalmar.
We have many guests visiting our center and we want to give them a warm welcome and good experience. So here some things, that are good to know :)
> no alcohol, no drugs
> respectful, communicative and attentive towards each other and guests
> with silent retreats we ask for silence
