We are a small social enterprise based in Northern Malawi, with a mission to provide last mile energy distribution to consumers at the bottom of the pyramid. Our target market are the typically off-grid, rural, low income consumers who cannot afford to purchase electrical goods, such as those sold by solar aid, and rely on inefficient paraffin lighting or small battery operated torches.
Our system offers a unique rental model, where consumers can pay per use of equipment such as phone charging, lighting for their home, or fishing lights, with the flexible approach lending itself to many of our consumers hand to mouth lifestyle. This allows these consumers to access high quality electrical equipment for the first time, improving their quality of life and standard of living.
In order to do this, a small scale solar system is set up and run from a local school, acting as a rental Hub. Whilst offering affordable energy access for the local community, the Hub also provides free lighting for the school, allowing children to study at night for the first time, as well as the creation of a community development fund from the profits of the business.
We operate close collaborations with the local schools, forming partnerships to run the operations of the business. Each Headteacher and Deputy Head is required to take ownership and responsibility for the project, supported by both our agents on site, as well as the knowledge and expertise of our project manager from our base nearby.
Help with Eco Projects
Helping here provides a culturally enriching, unique experience.
You will work hand in hand with our able project manager, a local Malawian who has extensive experience working with solar energy.
Our project is based in the picturesque Nhkata Bay. Sitting on the shore of the huge Lake Malawi, its population is located within a collection of settlements of varying sizes. The town relies mainly on fishing and farming as their primary income. Tourism has also brought business as well as a cheerful vibe, with its population very welcoming and eager to offer help to passing travellers. Working with us will enable you to blend the vibrant Nkhata Bay with experiences of rural communities where our project operates. These communities are often just 10-15 minutes drive from Nkhata Bay, but offer a stark difference.
Here you will have the opportunity to work closely with local schools and their staff to analyse the development of the business, what has gone well and any areas for improvement. You will be able to meet with the local village chiefs to gain feedback on the enterprise and attend community meetings throughout your stay. The villages are all welcoming and grateful for the developments brought, and during the placement you will be able to interact with a wide range of locals from varying backgrounds, gaining an in depth understanding of how a business can support the development of a community and the local cultures and hardships faced on a daily basis.
