Description
We are a couple in our 50s who welcome a bit of extra help with various projects whilst enjoying meeting new people and gaining new perspectives on life. We live in a spacious off-grid house in a rural area about 5km from the nearest town (Orgiva) and 4km from the small village above (Cáñar). We have spectacular views of the mountains opposite and with only a few other houses nearby, it is pretty quiet here; we are surrounded by olive trees and also have various other fruit trees; we often see eagles and kestrels and at the moment are enjoying the abundant wildflowers and birdsong.
We have two cats which are very much part of the family so it is essential you are calm and understanding around them.
We are both vegan, so will provide tasty and plentiful vegan food in return for your help. (We would require helpers to consume only vegan food whilst on the premises)
Ability to communicate in English is essential but Fi also speaks intermediate Spanish which she is trying to improve.
There will be opportunities to socialise with us here or in town, where there are often events e.g. gigs, fiestas (depending on when you come), the local rastro (flea market), yoga classes etc. Or walk in the mountains, of which there are many amazing walks. We love showing people our favourite mountain villages; there are so many routes to explore. Our location would also be ideal for someone who wants time to relax and unwind alone.
There will also be opportunities to learn about the traditional irrigation system used locally since at least the time of the Moors.
We welcome help with various tasks during the year, so depending on when you come we may be doing the following:
• Strimming/clearing the acequia (irrigation channel) which supplies all our household water. This is very steep and decent sturdy boots and outdoor clothing are essential. There may also be the opportunity to join a volunteer day (23 May) clearing one of the large acequias that supplies the village.
• Cleaning out our large water deposit (one day only, in May).
• Digging a pit to create a Hugelcultur mound (permaculture technique to grow plants in a way to conserve water)
• General help in the garden (weeding, watering etc).
• Small landscaping projects
• Lending a hand with general repair tasks

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We enjoy meeting new people and can show you round the local countryside, go for mountain walks etc and enjoy cultural life in the town together. There is plenty of opportunity to relax and spend some quality alone time if that is what you like. There will be a chance to join in with local yoga classes, chess group etc. Opportunity to improve your English as well.
