    Description

We're a friendly, adventurous British family spending three months on the beautiful Greek Ionian coast while we refit our 45ft sailing catamaran - our future home and adventure platform!

We have a spacious 4 bedroom house with a garden, directly on the beach, and we're looking to welcome a workaway volunteer to come stay with us and experience the magic of Greece and its ancient culture while helping with our two young children.

There are four of us: two adults and two small children who will be 1 and 3 when we arrive. One of us is a primary teacher and will be the children's primary carer throughout. The other will be heads-down on the boat refit during the day.

We're looking for one or more people to join us as part of the household, helping with the children alongside their mum. You could be an individual, a couple or even a family with similar age kids to ours.

The Ionian coast of northwest Greece is one of the most historically layered corners of Europe, and a volunteer joining us would have daily access to a part of the world where ancient history, Venetian architecture, Byzantine music traditions, and living Greek culture all exist in the same small radius. We've lived in Greece for many years and love teaching others about the culture and history of the area.

Preveza sits at the site of the Battle of Actium, where Octavian defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra in 31 BC - one of the pivotal moments in world history. The ancient city of Nicopolis, built to commemorate that victory, is minutes from town and still being excavated. The Ionian region has been shaped by successive waves of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman influence, all of which are visible in the architecture, food, and traditions of the area. The landscapes and legends here inspired writers from Homer to Byron, Edward Lear and the Durrells.

Day-to-day life here is an immersion in genuine Greek culture rather than a tourist version of it. Spend time in the old quarter of Preveza; visit the dozens of venetian forts in Preveza and the surrounding area or take a trip to the Acheron River, the mythological river of the underworld.

For those interested in wildlife, Preveza sits at the entrance to the extraordinary Ambracian Gulf; the largest wetland in Greece and one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the entire Mediterranean. The Gulf connects to the Ionian Sea through a channel less than 600 metres wide, right at Preveza's doorstep, which makes the town a natural gateway to one of Europe's great wildlife spectacles.

The Gulf supports over 300 bird species, hosts the Mediterranean's densest population of bottlenose dolphins, and shelters Dalmatian pelicans, loggerhead sea turtles, and 11 threatened species of shark and ray. Migratory birds in autumn include vast numbers of glossy ibis, sometimes gathering in flocks of up to a thousand birds, alongside white storks, multiple heron species, egrets, bitterns, and numerous birds of prey such as eagles.

The bottlenose dolphins of the gulf are a genetically distinct, year-round resident population; unique among Mediterranean dolphin groups and regularly visible from the water. The shallow seagrass beds also support short-snouted seahorses, and Eurasian otters inhabit the river margins feeding into the gulf.

We're looking for one or more people to join us as part of the household, helping with the children alongside their mum. You could be an individual, a couple or even a family with similar age kids to ours.

This is a support role, not a solo childcare position. You'll be helping alongside an experienced primary teacher and one of the pioneers of the UK "forest school" outdoor learning initiative.

The "perfect" candidate would have a childcare or a teaching background but what we need most is someone who is warm, patient, and genuinely loves small children. Energy and personality matter more than formal qualifications!

Typical commitment: around 5 hours per day, 5 days a week. The rest of the time is yours.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Lovely accommodation with lots of space, right on the beach!

A 4 bedroom, 6 bed house (you get your own private space), big garden, balcony, sunloungers, 100m away from the sea and a quiet rural beach. It's conveniently next to the airport (1 minute) and the wonderful Preveza (10min by car) and enchanting Lefkada (20min by car). The house is airy and sunny with four bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and a bathroom, a large garden.

Your own private room in a large beach house
    All meals and food
Access to everything the house offers including the beach 100m from the front door

Preveza sits at the point where the Ionian Sea meets the Ambracian Gulf, and the coastline here is genuinely extraordinary. Just outside town is Monolithi Beach, the longest in Europe at over 20km. Preveza itself is a quaint seaside town with hundreds of sailing yachts coming and going across the bay. Just up the coast is beautiful town of Parga with its colourful houses and incredible clifftop castle. The water in September is still warm, clear, and calm; there are turtles, dolphins, barracuda and many other incredible forms of aquatic life right in the bay outside.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are working on getting our 45ft catamaran ready to set off around the Mediterranean, then the Caribbean and beyond. If things go well we'd love to invite you to join us for a sailing holiday once she's seaworthy! If we get on great there's no reason you couldn't join us in future exotic locations as well. We're a sailing family with lots of experience and thousands of miles under the keel, and love to teach about sailing, life aboard, free diving, spear fishing and all sorts of other self-sufficiency skills.
