We spent almost 3 weeks at Martine's and learned so much about mushing and living off-grid.
We were staying in a cute private cabin next to the dog yard. There was electricity, wifi, and a woodstove to keep you warm. There was no running water but you could easily go and fill jugs of water in the shower house. There is a out house next to the
… read more cabin and even though it is not the best experience when it is -30 outside, we got used to it ! :) The best part is that you can see the magnificent northern lights from your bed !!!!!
We were helping Martine with snow shovelling, feeding the dogs, picking up the poop, and preparing the sled and the dogs when Martine went to run them, as well as a lot of other stuff. The dogs are so adorable and we loved to spend time with them. We were even able to go on our own sleds with our own teams. What an unforgetable experience !
On top of the work, we went for some walks with snowshoes, to have diner at the neighbours (super friendly people),...
Martine is a really sweet person and a true inspiration. She is so brave and has so much energy ! She was really caring for us and always made sure that we were well fed !!! We did not get to see Didier a lot but every time it was a real pleasure. He is also very nice and has a great sense of humor. On top of the sled dogs they also have a home dog, Jester, a belgian malinois, very well trained. We loved to play and to cuddle her.
We strongly recommend this place if you want to learn more about mushing and truly experience the north, with nice and caring people !!You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

I spent wonderful month at Fox Lake with Martin. This month was very rich in experience. Martin will share her great place and life of a musher with you. So if you are looking for just accommodation and food in exchange for few hours of work, this is not right place for you. But if you are looking for sharing a life with a real musher and learning
… read more how to handle sled dogs properly and how to mush, this is it. With this attitude you can learn a lot. She puts animals always on a first place.
Martin is a very inspirative, energetic and self-reliant person. Its amazing how much she can do in one day. She will very well take care of you, no matter what. She has wide knowledge of living life off-grid and she can share this experience with you. If you are willing to listen.
Accomodation is very cozy and nice cabin with good woodstove, electricity and also wi-fi. Nearby is a full freezer of good meat and Martin will provide you with everything you need. If you need, she will take you to town (Whitehorse) when she goes to work.
You will take care of dogs - feeding, cleaning and some jobs around. You will help with putting harnesses on dogs, hooking them when they go for run. So the work is not physically straining and you will have also time for yourself. After a while, you get some experience and Martin will take you with (your own) sled and dogs for a run which is just wonderful experience.
I'm also very glad I could've spent Christmas and New Year's Eve with Martin's friends, all friendly and nice people. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

Didier and Martine were awesome! I had so much fun discovering what Yukon living is all about. They were very welcoming, I felt right at home with them and it was so much fun to speak English AND French with them. They are very hard-working individuals who are passionate about what they do, I would recommend them to anyone who wants to experience
