We live in a beautiful valley in the Kootenays in the Southern interior of British Columbia in a small town called Creston. We are surrounded by stunning scenery and mountain ranges. We are non-certified organic gardeners who grow and sell produce and bake and sell bread throughout the spring and summer months. Our farm is small scale, but very productive and busy. We also have cows, chickens, ducks and a dog and cat. We grow herbs as well, and dry food for winter in our solar dryer. Our freezers are full of homegrown beef and chicken.
We are Christians by faith.
We are very family oriented and live close to most of our adult children and grandchildren. We love children and, we, as hosts, welcome them.
We are as self-sustaining as possible, and we care about the soil, the environment and people. We strive to be good stewards of the land.
We eat as much from our own farm as possible, and by that, we eat very well!
Our lifestyle is simple, and we work hard at most everything we do.
We are working on getting solar power and a functional micro-hydro system in our house. We are also in the midst of converting a school-bus into an RV.

There are a lot of places in our valley to hike, bike, swim, climb, camp and enjoy outdoor activities. Our spoken language is English, so if you want to improve your skills in this language, we can help you with that. We strongly believe in community and sharing of our lives with others openly and honestly. The way we farm is with the intention of being sustainable and ecologically good stewards of the land. We are most happy to introduce you to other friends and family who are always excited to meet new people and even spend time with them inviting them to various events , taking them on hikes and outings and having great conversations over hot cups of coffee, or cold glasses of kombucha. We are all about community and sustainable living.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
We are looking for someone to come alongside and help with the gardening and market vegetable stand prep, and help on a day to day basis. Five hours a day of help would be most appreciated for four or five days a week, which will include stocking and managing our small market stand, picking fruit, helping load and unload our solar dryer and other outdoor activities. There is a lot of work to do in the gardens--weeding, mulching, transplanting and harvesting. We grow with organic principles, no sprays, no pesticides and no chemicals. We build the soil through composting, mulching and no till methods. This all takes work. Also, we are hoping to build some fences for our animals sometime soon as well. Also we are working on a bus conversion for traveling in the future. There are household chores to help with, and grass to mow, and if you like to cook, we love to try new cuisines. There is a great thrift store in our town where you can pick up some work clothes very cheaply, so you don't need to pack a lot of extra work clothes that can weigh down your luggage.
We have decided on a no-pet policy.
Accommodations are simple but comfortable. We offer any spare beds we have, and a shared bathroom in the house.During the summer months we have a small room in the loft of our barn for guests. This will include use of the compost loo, and outdoor hot water shower. Our meat is homegrown and pasture raised. We can also accommodate workawayers in tents in our backyard, with lots of garden space and a patio with picnic tables and a fire pit.
We are happy to share meals and food and have abundance of amazing, healthy food to eat and enjoy. Our valley is a very excellent fruit and vegetable growing area. Also it is very beautiful!
Our town is a twenty minute drive to Kootenay Lake. This lake is a beautiful place with picnic sites, swimming, boating and water activities available. There are a lot of places in our valley to hike, bike, swim, climb, camp and enjoy outdoor activities. There is a large community complex that offers lots of activities and has an indoor swimming pool and exercise areas. Bring your passports, as we are only 6 km from the Canada / USA border so it is not far to go for a visit to the United States. We are pretty busy all summer with work, but would love to have more time for recreation which we could do if we can get more help, which is why we are looking for helpers through workaway.
We are looking for people who are honest and have integrity and good work ethic. It would be a lot of fun to spend time together getting to know you over shared meals, outings, work and recreation. We love deep conversations about most anything, and spending time laughing and learning together with....you!
