    Description

We are Josh (from the UK) and Gabi (from Hungary). After many years of 'rat race' type existence we decided to try something new. In November 2018 we bought a partly restored 150 year old farmhouse in the stunningly beautiful Aggtelek National Park in Northern Hungary. We finished the restoration and turned the property into a self catering guesthouse which we run (with the help of paid employees). We are now focusing on modernizing and updating the house we live in, a 90 year old adobe brick farmhouse located a couple of villages away from the guesthouse. We also grow lots of fruit and veg in the warmer months, and try to preserve as much of this as we can for the winter. We are located in a picturesque small village, surrounded by rolling, forested hills and networks of hiking trails.

In our free time we love going for long walks into the surrounding countryside, mushroom hunting, exploring the local area, reading and watching good movies. We have a large friendly dog, Maci, who adopted us upon our arrival in the village. He takes up quite a lot of our time and also loves long walks into the forest.
We eat a healthy mainly vegetarian diet, although are not strict about this. An increasing amount of our food comes from our ever expanding garden. We are interested in sustainability and try to have a low impact lifestyle as far as possible. We enjoy meeting others and sharing stories and experiences with them.

Josh grew up on a small wwoof farm in rural Ireland, meeting hundreds of different volunteers from all over the world. He also spent two years wwoofing in Europe, Canada, the US and Australia in his early twenties.

Volunteers staying with us will be able to experience life in a remote part of rural Hungary. You will be able to learn more about Hungarian culture, language, traditions and customs. We live in Aggtelek national park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The national park includes vast cave systems, one of which stretches over 25km into nearby Slovakia. Many guided tours are available within easy walking distance of our property. These include tours into the caves and wildlife tours. Wildlife is abundant in the national park, with a huge array of things to see.
Volunteers can also learn about our method of permaculture gardening or can get involved in restoring old furniture (which we have an abundance of!).

  • Help

    Help

The tasks can be quite varied here. We always need help in the garden and there are many old outbuildings which need attention. People with building, carpentry or electrics knowledge would be useful, but also anyone with lots of enthusiasm and initiative! Please note: volunteers are not required to help in the guesthouse.

    Accommodation

Volunteers have a basic room in a separate building, although a room in the main house is possible depending on availability. There is also plenty of room for tents or vans if this is preferable. The toilet is an outside compost one.

Food is included but we can be fairly informal with meals and mealtimes, sometimes eating leftovers or sandwiches and sometimes cooking a big meal.

    What else ...

Our village is easily accessible by public transport - there is one direct bus from Budapest everyday. Unfortunately this leaves at 6.30am! Other options are train from Budapest to Miskolc, then another train to Aggtelek-Josvafo. We may be able to pick volunteers up from Ozd or Kazincbarcika by arrangement - we normally go to town on a weekly basis.
Free time can be spent in many different ways; hiking one of numerous nearby trails, taking a tour into the nearby UNESCO world heritage cave system, exploring picturesque nearby towns and villages. Public transport is very good here, so volunteers can easily get into nearby towns during their free time to explore.

Please note: we are located in a rural area - people coming here need to bring appropriate footwear and clothing for wet, muddy conditions and cold (down to -15C) in the winter.
