I volunteered with Frank in Shawl Bay for 1 month in the summer, and it was absolutely amazing. I couldn't believe how quickly the time went by.
The place is remote, but the area is stunning and I made unforgettable memories going kayaking on the ocean, observing seals, bald eagles, porpoises (and even humpback whales in the distance)! It is the

I had the chance to go on fishing trips with Frank and his friend many times, even though I had no fishing experience. But they were really nice, patient and helpful, explaining and teaching me everything.
I ate excellent food (fresh salmon, halibut, cod, prawns, crabs, and many other delicious things such as Frank's chilli) there.
I had my own room in the floating house, with a bathroom and kitchen right next door, and was able to do laundry. So I had absolutely everything I needed in this cosy and lovely house.
In return for all of this, all I had to do was helping Frank whenever he needed (cleaning the house, pressure washing the docks, helping preparing the fish that we caught, washing the boat, or other small works where needed). But I had plenty of free time to relax, enjoy the sun on the dock, or explore the area.
Frank is very kind and accommodating, the neighbours are really nice, helpful and welcoming, and I could share some really nice dinners with them.
In summary, I had an unforgettable time there, and I would come back again with no hesitation if I have the opportunity.
Thanks for everything Frank and Nico !You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

I'm not sure what we expected when we were travelling towards Shawl Bay, but we were somewhat overwhelmed by the time we reached it's shores. The area is located in the far reaches of BC and can only be accessed by boat. On the way over, were greeted by sea lions, dolphins and bait balls and of course a friendly welcome by our host Frank.
Frank is
… read more an incredibly kind and generous person; he went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and even took us along on a fishing trip which was an incredible experience. He was always very patient and happy to help us when needed in whichever way he could. He prepared some of the most amazing fish we have ever eaten - be prepared if you are a fish lover as you will be in heaven at this place! (And if not, prepare to become one)
In terms of the work, it wasn't too demanding. It varied from sanding and prepping a houseboat for painting to fetching logs in the forest for wood fire. The accommodation was also lovely with our own room in one of the floating houses on the bay.
We spent our spare time either sea-kayaking around the still waters of the bay, which was truly a unique experience, catching a glimpse of a baby bear and porpoises, or helping Frank to hoist the crab and shrimp cage to see what the fish gods had delivered. We also spent lots of time relaxing, chatting and sharing meals with Frank and the local neighbours, some of the kindest and most interesting people we have ever met. Don't arrive without exercising your jaw ready to laugh. We were treated by everyone with such respect and a genuine effort to make us feel part of Shawl Bay, and we made some great friends in our time there.
So to Frank, Randy, Mindy, Gary & Jim, we cannot thank you enough for the good times, as that's all there was.You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.
