    Description

The center is a registered not-for-profit Volunteer/Community-driven initiative that aims to address social issues/ills in the village of Mzingazi, Richards Bay, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Children have the right to be loved, protected, respected, and heard, a right to proper nutrition, a right to good developmental education and the right to enjoy just being kids.

The small community of Mzingazi embodies the lines of social inequality in South Africa with poverty levels exceeding the national average. The majority of its inhabitants earn below the aimed targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).Most families survive on child and elderly government social grants.

We aspire to produce young people who are empowered, able to realise their full potential and understand their roles and responsibilities in making meaningful contributions to the development of their immediate community and the country.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Past volunteers have, as you can see from reviews, found their time here to be very enriching. You will get to experience life in a safe South African township and learn about isiZulu culture and traditions. You will learn about the challenges and opportunities of running a community center with limited resources. And most importantly you will have a chance to impact our community’s children and their families. They will learn that differences are not weird or strange, they are just different from what they know.

The center is constantly growing and trying to improve — so there are plenty of places for volunteers to fit in and help make a difference. You can assist with our smallest children (ages 6 months-5 years) in the morning, with our older children (ages 8-16 years) in our after-school program in the afternoon, and/or help with other community-development initiatives including sewing, bead-making, and helping teach adults business and professional skills including computer skills. We also have ongoing construction projects where we could use help, and are trying to develop a garden and other special spaces for the children.

With the children, volunteers can help with homework, talk to them about life-skills, help with computer lessons in our new computer lab, coach and teach sports and games, and generally help with extramural activities. Overall, we are always looking for volunteers with initiative willing to help make the Center and the community a better place.

Our volunteers have their own private bedrooms on the grounds. They will also have access to a bathroom with hot water and a full kitchen (usually only shared with other volunteers).

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are coastal with beautiful beaches (less than a 5 minute walk away) and lovely sunny weather all year round. Volunteers can go hiking and also do safaris in the neighbouring towns to see wildlife (there are big-5 game reserves less than two hours away, including game reserves with the largest number of rhino and hippo in the country).

We charge a small fee of 5 dollars a day, to help assist with food and utilities, as everyone working at the center is a volunteer and the little money we have is needed to maintain this place. However, depending of the length of your stay and the current situation, the amount is negotiable. We can also discuss what meals the Center can provide, depending on the times you are able to work.

Also, because we have to promote stability and consistency for the children, we cannot accept volunteers for less than one month.
