Our foundation is dedicated to the care and protection of the many canines and felines that are victims of neglect, abuse and abandonment.
When we welcome unwanted animals through our gates our main aim is to restore their health, both mental and physical, so that they can be rehomed with owners capable of giving them the love and attention they deserve.
In order to look after our furry friends, we make sure they have been medicated, have a balanced diet of natural, homemade food and are sterilised where possible, we also use a range of plant-based medicines for ailments where veterinary prescribed drugs are not necessary. When looking after ourselves, we strive to be as self-sufficient and environmentally friendly as possible. Our food at the sanctuary is 100% vegan and where possible we produce our own everyday items such as soaps and shampoos using natural materials.
If this all sounds like it’s your cup of tea, please don’t hesitate to drop us a message.
With lots of love,
the Canto team.

Campoalegre is a typical village in Colombia, where you can learn about the country life of the province of Huila, capital of rice, where you can visit rivers, mountains, observe flora and fauna, eat typical dishes, visit other nearby villages and make friends on the spot To know Colombian peasant traditions.
You can exchange knowledge in our Eco farm projetc, participate in educational program for children and learn about Colombian culture.
Work will take place on a rotation of three shifts shared between volunteers:
- 6.00 - 12:00 Break 13.00 - 17.00
- 13:00 - 17:00 Break 18.00 - 22.00
Depending on the duration of your stay, we would ask you to do a night shift with another person (22.00 - 6.00) once a week. You’ll never be on your own.
At our Non-Governmental and Non-Profit foundation, we are looking for all manner of help, two skill sets we urgently need however are people with construction experience and veterinarians or trainee veterinarians.
Our sanctuary is home to around 80 dogs and over 100 cats, so there is lots to be done.Time flies as you workaway (at the sanctuary, puns are always welcome 😉), whether it be cleaning kennels or getting stuck in to one of the many projects we have underway.
The morning schedule starts at 6.00 am with the feeding time for all of our animals, cats and dogs. Then, until we have homemade vegan breakfast at 7.30, we begin to clean the area, picking up the poos and the litter boxes. The morning is mostly dedicated to the care and cleaning of the cages.
At noon, once we sit down as a family for a delicious, natural, vegan lunch, there is the opportunity to rest before our afternoon routine begins. After lunch we check the animals for parasites and other ailments, go for walks and give them food again around 14.30. Playing with dogs and cats is also a work we will ask you to do :)
Sometimes work is necessary afterwards, as with so many animals the unexpected can always occur. Their may be puppies, kittens or poorly animals to care for, as well as the possibility of unwanted cats or dogs being abandoned at our door at any hour. So please only apply if you are a passionate and dedicated animal lover who does not mind rolling their sleeves up and putting in a little extra for the cause. Although the days can be long, the love you receive back from our four-legged friends will make it all worth it ten times over.
In the interest of the animals' welfare and that of the others working at the sanctuary, we ask that volunteers spend a minimum of 2 weeks here.
We do not charge anything for your accommodation or food for your stay. Depending on the shift you are doing, you will have breakfast - lunch or dinner. That said, we are a non-profit organisation relying completely on donations, so if you would like to donate something or perhaps even raise money with friends and family for the cause, we at the foundation would be eternally grateful.
-WHAT WE OFFER:
- VEGAN food.
Apart from some of the meat used to feed the animals, we are a strictly meat free sanctuary. Nutritious Vegan food and natural juices are provided at the shelter for all volunteers, however you need to know that we haven’t been able to create a space at the shelter completely free of animals, so you need to be aware that food can sometimes have animal hairs!
If that is something you can handle then there will always be a warm hot chocolate, made from scratch with locally grown cacao, waiting for you at the end of the day (accompanied by some homemade bread for dipping).
-DORMITORIES: Small but comfortable rooms in a maloca house. Dorm rooms range from 1-3 beds in one of our traditional maloca style huts.
The rooms are simple, with a bed to rest your head (in the roof top room just mattresses), and enough room for all of your belongings.
If you have liked what you’ve read and feel you could also be a key part in improving the lives of all the wonderful beings, large and small, furry and non-furry that reside in Campoalegre, then please drop us a message.
We look forward to hearing from you!
