    Description

Hello! I’m a youngish retiree with too much house for one person. And a dog. And a cat. And fish! :) Over the year my home has been open to a variety of visitors and land/housemates. As a teen, my family hosted foreign exchange students and teachers, and I was a property rental host (with a solid 5 star rating) back when that was just getting started. It’s been a delight to meet travellers and share this awesome little piece of the planet. I enJoy hiking, camping, hot spring soaking, dancing and... working on my house!
I have recently added a few RV sites on my property. The next phase is to build trails and some “fun stuff” to start also hosting spiritual retreats here.

My property adjoins a Forest Service wildlife management area which has hiking, bicycling and horseback riding trails. Nearby Silver City is billed as “the Gateway to the Gila Wilderness”, which is the first designated wilderness area in the US. It is an historic mining town, now also known for art and cultural events. There are many attractions in “day-trip” distance from the house. We experience four seasons (sometimes all in one day) but none of them extreme so it’s pretty pleasant year round.

Many of my friends from other places describe New Mexico as “a country within a country” and that’s pretty accurate. We have a rich and unique history and culture. This particular part of New Mexico was once part of Mexico and has a population that’s over 50% Hispanic. It’s also the ancestral home of the Chiricuahua Apaches and before that, the Mimbres culture. I was born here and have been pretty thoroughly integrated in these cultures as well as mining, ranching and, more recently, the art and music scene here... and I love to share it!

    Help

At this time, the first projects I would welcome some help with involve some landscaping, such as moving soil/rocks to make steps to certain parts of the yard; channeling run-off water in a small area, possibly moving some plants. I recently built a DIY hot tub that I need some help with on the finishing touches and landscaping.
I would also welcome help with organizing (spaces and filing), transferring music to digital format, and organizing photos.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

I have one bedroom with a double bed to share inside my house. It has it’s own full bath unless I have overnight company. The rest of the house, (other than my room and office) would also be available as shared space.
There is also an RV space with full hook-ups, suitable for a camper van or small motorhome or trailer.
I try to eat 100% organic, but am not a purist. I’m mostly vegetarian, but do cook and eat (Organic &/or grass fed) meat. Depending on your food preferences and cooking skills we can alternate cooking, or I do all the cooking, or you cook as part of your work away to free me to work on other things myself. I’d like to negotiate this when we talk because it seems like it could vary a lot.
It would be nice to have minimum two week stays, but that’s flexible.

Our usual public transportation is fairly limited, so in order to get around locally it would be advisable to have your own transportation. The house is about six miles from town and then of course, other sites/day trips are within a couple hours drive. You could search “Silver City, NM”, “Gila National Forest”, “Gila Wilderness”,”Gila Cliff Dwellings” “City of Rocks State Park”, “The Catwalk, Glenwood, NM”, “hiking trails in and near Silver City, NM”, “Faywood Hotsprings”, “Gila Hotsprings”, for more specific information near the time of your expected stay.
