  • Description

    Description

We’re 3 British-German siblings who are renovating a rural house which will soon be a small, cosy hostel on the Camino de Santiago.

We have a big garden, that we'd love to make into a herbal medicine and permaculture space.

We have a lovely network of friends and neighbours and would add you to a couple of groups so you can attend social meetups and events in the area. It’s a very diverse and international group, and there are some other Workaway projects nearby who also host volunteers who you can connect with.

As the house is on the Portuguese Camino de Santiago, there are hundreds of pilgrims passing every week just 100 metres from the property.

  • Help

    Help

We are looking for help in the garden, which is a jungle at the moment! At least half the work is maintenance, like cutting back overgrown areas and invasive plants, but you will also have the chance to get creative if you'd like to shape or plant out an area.

Some basic gardening experience is useful (let us know about this in your reply) and if you have permaculture knowledge and experience that's extra welcome! We'd love to make a plan and start putting it into practice.

This host offers a language exchange
We're a good place for English lanuage immersion. All of us speak some German and Portuguese, one of speaks Spanish and another loves to learn languages, whether it's Bulgarian, Turkish or whatever your native language is!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

If you have a van, there's plenty of space for you to park on the land.

For anyone without a van, we have bell tents that you can stay in and an outdoor kitchen to use.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

    Food

As it's only 2 hours of work a day, we can't provide any food. This means that it's essential to have your own vehicle to go shopping! We also prefer to do our own cooking as we have quite specific dietary requirements, but are up for coordinating times to eat and socialise together!

    Other amenities

You're welcome to use the communal space, bathrooms, outdoor kitchen and big garden. There's a cold water plunge pool and a nice hammock waiting for you too!

    Sight-seeing

The place is conveniently situated between:
    - Paredes de Coura: 15 minutes drive, a smaller pretty town with a fantastic river beach
    - Serra d’Arga: 20 minutes drive, a stunning natural park with hikes, rock climbing and natural pools
    - Ponte de Lima: 25 minutes drive, the oldest town in Portugal with a scenic Roman bridge.
    - Valenca do Minho: 25 minutes drive, a beautiful town in a fort
    - Spain: 25 minutes drive to Tui (a pretty town just over the bridge from Valença)
    - Beautiful beaches: 35 minutes drive to Caminha, a huge, beautiful sandy beach on the border with Spain, at the estuary of the River Minho and with lush green views; 40 minutes drive to Afife or Praia de Ancora
    - Hot springs: 45 minutes drive to the municipal springs in Salvaterra de Miño or 1h 20 minutes to the magical natural thermal pools near Geres National Park
    - Geres National Park: 40 minutes drive to the closest edge of this vast natural region
    - Porto: 1h 15 minutes drive to the centre and only 1h 5 minutes drive to the airport
