Our small and friendly school is a two to three day walk from the nearest road, located in the stunning and remote Rolwaling Valley near Beding village (3600m altitude) within the mighty Nepal Himalayas close to the border with China/Tibet.
The school is situated on it’s own, approximately 20 minutes walk from Beding village. There are currently 20 students (all boys) who study English, Nepali, Tibetan, Maths and Buddhist Philospophy while living at the school full time.
As the school is located in a valley populated by Sherpa people the culture here is very rich. Not only that, the valley is also known as a ‘Beyul' or ‘Hidden Valley’ which makes it a very special and spiritual place where Tibetan Buddhism is practiced by the local people.
To get here you will need to complete a 10-12 hour bus or jeep journey from Kathmandu followed by a two to three day trek through the Himalayas.
Please be aware the remoteness of the place means there is currently no internet or mobile phone connection available and no showers or running hot water for washing. It’s altitude means evenings and nights are cold all year while the monsoon brings a lot of rain in July/August.
Basic solar power based electricity will charge any electronic devices such as kindles, iPods etc which you may wish to bring for entertainment when you’re not working.
Water is collected from local rivers while cooking is done on wood burning fires, giving an opportunity for you to immerse yourself in a very basic way of living while having a very genuine cultural experience while volunteering at the school.
There will also be opportunities to explore the stunning mountain scenery and spiritual sites that will surround you during your time in the valley including ancient buddhist meditation caves and high glacial lakes.
As you will be staying a very culturally rich and spiritual Himalayan Valley your time at our school will allow you to be immersed in Buddhist and Himalayan culture with opportunities to visit Beding’s newly renovated monastery and other spiritual sites in the valley if you wish.
Although it can be a bit of a challenge for some, living a much more basic lifestyle with little connection with others outside the valley can help you experience where you are in a much deeper and more authentic way, something which can end up being a life-changing experience for many.
