    Description

Do you believe that every child has the right to play and learn? Do you have energy, enthusiasm and experience with children?

Our project works with displaced children in northern France, providing safe spaces for them to play and learn. We are part of a strong network and community of compassionate people, trying to do their best to support people living outside in informal camps in Calais and Dunkirk.

We are always looking for compassionate and hard-working individuals to join our small team of volunteers. As a volunteer with us, you will be helping to plan, prepare and implement play sessions for displaced children aged 0-14. Through sessions include games, crafts, sports, creative and educational activities we hope to support these children in their development, mitigate the effects of toxic stress and have fun.

If you love to play, we’d love to have you!

    Our volunteer requirements:

-You are committed to safeguarding the vulnerable people in your care
-You are passionate about every child’s right to play and education
-You have experience of working with children and young people in a paid or voluntary capacity
-You are over the age of 19
-You are able to provide a DBS check/ police check
-You are available for at least 2 months (this is not negotiable)
-You have a strong work ethic and ability to work in a close-knit team
-You have the financial means to cover the cost of their time with the project

We welcome French and English speakers, and would be very excited to have anyone who could speak Arabic, Sorani Kurdish, Farsi, Pashto or Dari! We are keen to hire those that are refugees and/ or BIPOC. If you are keen to get experience of working in the humanitarian field, but are concerned about being able to fund your trip, please do get in touch as we may be able to help. We do not want to exclude anyone who has the skills and dedication to work with us and we encourage everyone to apply.

If you are interested in applying to work with us, please get in touch and we can send you an application form.

We are an international team which allows us to learn about each others cultures including French, English, Danish, German and Italian!

Our charity was founded to bring play and education to children living in informal refugee camps. Our team of volunteers run sessions 6 days a week (everyone gets 2 days off). These sessions include play, education, craft, sport, drama and more. Our service provides children with a space in which to feel safe, learn new skills, feel a sense of autonomy and individuality, make friends and escape into their imagination. In turn, this helps to mitigate some of the toxic stress they continue to experience living in such a hostile environment.

Despite being a year and a half old, we have already seen the positive effects of our service and we continue to go from strength-to-strength. It is an exciting time to be joining our hardworking and friendly team as we continue to grow, improve and consolidate our project. Each of our volunteers shapes our service - it is a space in which all opinions are valued and welcomed.

It is not only an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of these wonderful children but also develop your skills too. Facing new challenges every day and working as part of a close-knit team means every team member develops keen problem solving, leadership and teamwork skills. Many volunteers help with the running of the charity such as finance management, fundraising or social media, depending on their interests.

Successful applicants will live and work with our wonderful close-knit volunteer team. We spend the mornings resourcing, planning and packing for sessions. We head out in the afternoon to conduct sessions. We are lucky enough to work alongside some other organisations in Calais and are part of a fantastic community of volunteers.

We live in a caravan park in Marck. This is a fifteen minute drive from the warehouse. We drive in together in the mornings.

The caravan park is in a rural area, set on a beach, in a quiet village. It is around 20 minutes from the town centre of Calais which has all normal amenities.

We currently house our volunteers in two caravans. Each room sleeps 2 people. You will share a room with one other volunteer from our organisation. The rooms are small but each has some storage. We can provide bedding if required although advise you bring your own.

The caravans have one bathroom each with toilet, sink and shower. Then there is an open plan kitchen/ dining/ relaxing area. This is where we hang out in the evening and cook together. It is cosy. We also socialise on the beach and there is a small bar in the village.

Other organisations also house their volunteers in the caravan park so we can socialize with other teams in the evening. There is a great community feel and we are a welcoming team.
