Hello/Salve, I’m Lauren!

I am a curious and adventurous person, described by my family and friends as positive, funny, kind, and determined. I have a deep interest in life, all the opportunities it holds, and a desire to connect with others.

I am studying film, recently finished for the summer and later moving to Toronto for more school late this fall. I am passionate about many things, but my biggest goal is to one day create films that have important messages and meaning.

I have always loved travel, and have been lucky to have done two different stays with workaway hosts in Italy. I fell in love with the country, culture, language, and lifestyle. I am eager to return and am seeking available hosts.

I already have my Italy working holiday visa, as well as travel insurance. I have continued studying speaking Italian while at home.

I decided to use workaway because of my interest in gaining knowledge of the world, connecting with others, and assisting anyone in need of help. I am always growing and aiming to be the best version of myself possible, so I am very grateful to my past hosts who have made this possible for me.

I did well in English classes, I enjoy reading and writing, and feel I could certainly help others practice/perfect their English. My previous stay was with a family, helping them practice speaking in english. I have been studying Italian and can speak/understand in some conversations - but am eager to improve!

Since graduating high school, I have began studying psychology, culinary arts/baking, and business, but with such a wide variety of interests I have yet to decide on what to pursue in university so am waiting to return to school until I have chosen the right path for myself.

I am fluent in english, and feel I could assist others in practicing the language as well. I would love to learn other languages if given the opportunity!

I have worked as a barista in multiple coffee shops over the years, and have substantial knowledge of coffee and a love for latte art!

I would love to offer workaway hosts with any help/skills that I already possess, or new ones I could be taught as I am a fast and enthusiastic learner. I live by myself with my dog, so I am familiar with usual housework - like tidying, painting, redecorating or even small fixes. Additionally I have had many pets (dogs, a cat, a large fish tank, bunnies, and even a hedgehog) so am very passionate about spending time with or helping animals. In the past, I’ve also volunteered in a children’s museum, and a senior care home. I always love cooking/baking for others, and I am also pretty experienced with plants, having a diverse collection in my house, growing vegetables outside in the summer, and I have even worked in a greenhouse.

Most importantly I am open to being taught new skills in other areas not mentioned, and even if I had no prior experience, I always try my best and tend to pick up new skills fast.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help with projects around our ...)

I was extremely lucky to have this as my first workaway experience.

Angela’s proactive communication before my visit made planning and travel go smoothly.
I took a bus from Rome and they were kind enough to have their son pick me up at the station. (Also a big thanks to him for the help while I was there like walking the dogs and more - even … read more answering my questions about “football” - or soccer as we call it here in Canada!)
The house was busy when I arrived as Mabel had her puppies the day before, but Angela and Tony made me feel welcome as soon as I got there, and after meeting the dogs (who are all SO special I don't know how to fit it all into this feedback!), let me get settled and showed me around.

I got to stay in a comfortable room with my own bathroom - shared for laundry sometimes but never posed a privacy issue. I found it easy to have time to myself, while also feeling welcome to socialize downstairs, whether chatting with my hosts, spending time with the dogs, reading, or watching a movie.

In terms of working hours, they were flexible and understanding while figuring out what worked best for the both of us, but were still professional about it to make sure tasks were clear, priorities were known, and the necessary work got completed.
It seemed from what they said that work could vary depending on time of year, current projects, etc., but during my time there I look back fondly on the average day: spending time out back in the morning sun, drinking a cappuccino as the dogs got some exercise and we played with their toys. I was told if there was specific things to do - like cleaning out a spare room, tidying the patio, or even getting to brush Bruno, but on other days I got into a nice routine of helping with general housework/cleaning since my hosts were kept more than busy watching newborn puppies, and taking good care of the adult dogs. This meant I would usually listen to music, do my best to stay on top of the dishes, tidy, sweep, mop, etc.
Even past the hours they asked of me, I found myself wanting to help extra when I could because it seems only natural to want to help and be kind to those who are doing the same for you! (Plus as a dog-lover myself, I would hardly consider walking the dogs or watching cute little puppies to be considered a “chore’!)

Food was easy to find when eating on my own, and shared meals were always delicious. I was lucky to get to eat Tony’s fresh bread, potato pancakes, and the dinners that he and Angela made like chilli or pasta.

As mentioned I had good opportunities in my free time, and can’t go without thanking Angela for her guidance on bus routes and Tony’s willingness to drive me into Bisenti to the bus stop. I also appreciated my chats with Angela, she was open with me and told me stories of her own and listened to mine as well which was very nice.

Overall it goes without saying it was an experience of a lifetime and I miss it everyday. I love being able to keep up with the dogs and puppies as they grow up through their facebook page. I wish Tony, Angela, and family/pets well, and will always be grateful for everything I learned there and for them opening their home to visitors like me.
