Beschreibung
We are Judit and Adrià, a couple of 34-year-olds from Barcelona. Judit is an emergency room and intensive care nurse and Adrià is a biotechnologist-neuroscientist, but we decided to take some time off to live our dream of travelling around the globe (for a second time). We did it for a year and a half some time ago and now we’re giving it another round!

We’ve lived abroad for several years for professional reasons, but we have also taken the most of it at the personal level. Thanks to that experience, we’ve met people from all over the world and we now have friends scattered across many countries – we’re taking the chances that we have to visit them during our travels :) We’re eager to being exposed to other ways of thinking and doing, and we feel like we can communicate with all kinds of human beings.

We already used WorkAway as one of our main ways of travelling, and we think it is a unique way to get to know places and their people in depth. Both of us had previous volunteering experience, particularly as scout leaders, managing groups of 11-14 year-old kids. Since the age of scout kids ourselves, we developed a love for mountains, hiking, and nature. We also really enjoy everything that has to do with the ocean: wind/kite/surfing, kayaking, snorkelling/diving... All of this has contributed to an environmental awareness that has shaped the way we live our lives. WorkAway experiences so far have included permaculture, wildlife conservation, gardening, landscaping, animal care, and construction (we built a pizza oven from scratch!). We've also done house sitting for two months while managing cabin and car rental at the property.

We’re good with logistics, methodical work, and interacting with people. Our main jobs are relatively specific, but we transfer many of the skills to other activities and, most importantly, we’re willing to learn whatever is needed! We’re very keen on outdoor and social tasks, which we think will take us closer to the places and the cultures. Thanks to prospective hosts, and hopefully see you soon!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Experience agroecological ...)

We spent two fantastic weeks at the farm, and we can say that, as a WorkAway project, it excels in all the possible aspects that make the experience positive for everyone - this is all thanks to Madhu and Sampada, M&S from here on ;)

The work is interesting, varied enough, physically intense sometimes - as it should be, since this is a farm :) -… read more and, importantly, communication channels are always open, so what needs to be done is always clear and questions/suggestions on the tasks are always welcome. Our working hours were from early morning until midday, to avoid the heat of the day, which also gave a lot of freedom for the rest of the day. M&S were very thoughtful in this respect: they cared for the volunteers' wellbeing and were relaxed about the timing (it felt more like a contribution to the farm's needs rather than "work", and we truly felt useful). We were lucky to be there for turmeric harvest, which was a rewarding task, and we learnt a lot about this interesting crop. Other tasks were mulching, lentil harvest, photography around the property, DIY tasks... there's always something to do in a farm!

After working in the fields/property, it was just "the good life": refreshing dips in the amazingly beautiful river (waterfall included!), exploring the natural surroundings and enjoying the most delicious meals! Sunita cooked super yummy, healthy, and abundant lunch and dinner. Fresh chapati/bhakri in every meal, rice, veg curries (sooo many different ones!), dhal in various forms... it was a dream come true for food lovers like us, and the best way to discover true Maharashtrian cuisine. Not to forget, the best tea ever was always ready, and M&S surprised us everyday with a new, tasty, and filling breakfast, which was a nice morning break as well. Time could also be spent reading their varied and interesting collection of books, doing some trips into town, and playing with Chiku, Butler and Pili (when she wanted), the furry friends that made it an even happier place.

The "cultural exchange" possibilities were also top-notch: M&S put a lot of energy into ensuring that the volunteers also get as much as they can from this perspective. They are very proactive in keeping and nurturing connections with communities in town, and we were invited to several events related to hindu traditions (including Shivaratri and the first days of Holi celebrations). They were super informative when it came to Indian culture, farming, and any topic really, and always had time to answer our (many) questions. They even organised an outing with volunteers and friends, which could be summarised as "perfection": we went to visit a temple and its sacred grove, a fort (with home-made and super good picnic), a beach with baby turtle hatching and a beautiful sunset, and had a super local and again delicious dinner at a starting homestay - all this in one afternoon! This was "just" a plus, and it might not always be possible to have such outings due to farm work and logistics, but it's just to illustrate how much effort M&S put into making the experience memorable for everyone. They were also genuinely interested in other people's background and stories, and asked all volunteers to prepare one of the meals during their stay (which is like nothing, considering they fed us all the meals during our stay!) with a typical dish from their country - another great way to share with others and to celebrate life.

Thank you guys for this inspiring and fun time we had together! We will miss you (but we'll be in touch ;P) and we wish you the best of luck in your project - you deserve it!

Jane… read more already could see how Adria and Judit mind was already, upon their arrival on 3rd Feb 2025, fully on their thinking caps what to work during their stay, taking in the consideration of teachers input with the emphasis on the English Language. A wonderful 2-week.

The good character, well mannered, kindness, doing things with own hands, are much ingrained strongly in both individuals. Their love for the earth, and self-sufficiency inspired us, also serves as reminder.

They took charge of the space available to make a meaningful story for themselves ( 😆 hmmm, rather it was really our school's unstructured curriculum environment) - impressive display of work ethics, dedication, self respect, initiative, adapility.
Always up for a good time. We like to suggest that following in the school transport could feel bits of the hustle and bustle, and where kids live.

Teacher Anjal appreciated to have the practice task on the skit of "The Red Riding Hood" shared by both of them. (The kids fondly remembered you during their performance on February 28th , Judit , Adria)

Because of the laughters, positive energy generated during the games, the memories were good for the children. Thank you so much for leaving those, the laughters and the energy ,in the kids.

Both hold so much strength in them. They are well mannered, humble, kind, talented! previous feedback from other hosts was truly how we saw Adria and Judit. Serious about life, serious about the work, very well thought-out approach, and execute.

Judit and Adria, their exceptional good character, shaped in part by their experiences as Scouts, shines through in everything they do. The values of scouting - integrity, respect, and service- are evident in their actions and interactions. The professionalism, approachability, and high emotional intelligence make them both as inspiring individuals. in their early 30s, they demonstrated incredible maturity, honesty, and philosophical depth.

We must confess that having them both as friends during our "adulting" phase would have been transformative for us personally.

Serious people, Intelligent.
Good conversations, they have a playful and carefree spirit. Always up for a good time.
Quite cool blend of brains and charm.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help us to enhance a ...)

What a fantastic time we had here! We only spent two weeks there, and should we have stayed longer, it would have been even harder to leave :'-)

Let's begin with the most important part: the work with the kids. The environment here is very positive: children learn in three languages (Malayalam, English, and Hindi), but they also play a lot, and… read more teachers aim for inclusion of all the diversity that they have - something great to witness. Regarding our activities with them, we were given some suggestions and also a lot of freedom, which was very stimulating as well as a big responsibility - we can only thank the teachers and project managers for that level of flexibility and trust. We did lots of games and exercises to work on English vocabulary and spelling/reading, on mime and expression, and on focus and coordination. We also played many games they loved, just for the fun, and we made some crafts too. With the older group, we rehearsed the play for their annual festival, and on the last day we did a mini-workshop on cooking "truita de patates", one of our typical dishes from home. Kids were full of energy (something we could handle well thanks to our experience as scout leaders in the past), which translated into high motivation, significant learning, and a very rewarding time for us too! We will always treasure the smiles and all the joy that they brought to our hearts.

This was already a cultural exchange by itself, but the teachers and helpers played a very important role in making our stay remarkable from that perspective too. We were shown nice towns around during the weekend, had delicious food (daily here, and also in one of our outings), and got to experience an impressive Hindu festival that was taking place during that time. We were also taken on the bus for a ride after school time, to see the towns where kids lived. And we got to meet Jane on our first day, who was very thoughtful and cared for us from the distance during our whole stay. Many thanks to all of you for ensuring we had such a pleasant and interesting time.

Last but not least, the room the WorkAway hosts provide is awesome: clean, very spacious, with direct views to the sunrise and the lush green nature around here... it was a very harmonious space for us to chill after the intense days. The fact that we were living on the upper floor was both convenient and very special, as it contributed to our sense of belonging :)

We only have words of gratitude and wish this beautiful project lots of success in the future!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help with personal projects ...)

We spent 5 weeks at the ranch and we still can't believe how quickly they went!

The place is just beautiful: the house and cabins are in the middle of an immense meadow and next to the buffalo pastures, surrounded by towering mountains in all directions and walking-distance to a wild and unspoiled river (the Blaeberry). The buffalo are majestic… read more animals, and white-tailed deer came by almost daily. Clear nights were absolutely star-filled, and we were lucky enough to witness the unusual northern lights (for the first time in our lives!). We were also fortunate to see a late-autumn landscape turn into snow-covered winter in our last days there, which was awesome!

The main jobs during our time there were feeding lovely rabbits and funny chickens, cleaning cabins, and splitting wood for the winter, but there were many different occasional tasks such as burning huge wood piles, assisting Leo with the loader tractor, working on fences, or putting tin around a new cabin. So the work was diverse enough for us not to get bored while contributing to the project, and we got to learn some cool new skills!

Leo is a great guy and a very nice person. He made us feel very welcome and valued from the first day, and he always cared for our well-being. When he came to pick us up in town, he took us straightaway to the grocery store to get anything we needed for our meals. On our first working day, he had us join a buffalo tour that he was giving to some guests, which was super interesting. He always took the necessary time to explain both work- and non-work-related manual processes involving tools (e.g. using the axe to splite wood, operating the quad and the snowmobile, and even native fire-making!) and focused on both safety and efficiency - he was a great teacher. We shared several fantastic meals and many many stories and experiences, and he introduced us to some of his lovely friends - with whom we got together a few times during our stay! He was very generous, kind, appreciative, interesting, and fun to spend time with. We'll definitely keep in touch :)

Many thanks to Leo, Chester Jr and the rest of the herd. Also to Santi, who we didn't meet, but we spent some time in his amazing cabin (so thanks for building it!). And to the rest of beautiful people that we met at the ranch and who made our stay a very positive experience - Monika&Liz, Ben&Ella, and Skye. Good luck to you all!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help welcome guests at our ...)

Imagine living in a beautiful cabin surrounded by mangroves and jungle, metres away from an incredible coral reef. Imagine being offered several projects and being able to choose based on your interests and motivations. Imagine being surrounded by people who care about your personal wellbeing and who share the joy of living in such a wonderful… read more place. It sounds too good to be true, but it’s not: areally is a hidden gem in the WorkAway universe. Let us give you a bit more insight:

- THE PLACE: Accommodation is the same as where guests of the eco-lodge stay, which already tells you how well WorkAwayers are treated. There are 4 cabins on the water and a room in the forest house, and depending on reservations we stayed in one another (which involved a bit of moving around but also got us the chance to try them all!). All of them are splendid: built with really good taste, absolutely surrounded by nature, yet comfortable and bug-free thanks to very high quality mosquito net “walls”. The surroundings are unbeatable: on land, lush vegetation (including many tropical fruits) and nature sanctuary-level wildlife (sloths can be seen everyday, and if you explore enough you can find monkeys, snakes and even caimans); in the water, more species of coral than you can think of, lots of fish, and dolphins passing by at some point on most days; at night, the most intense bioluminescence we’ve ever seen, competing with a Milky Way-clear sky to see who’s brighter. Rubber boots, kayaks, a SUP board, and snorkelling gear were available for us to use, so the potential for exploring was limitless!

- THE WORK: Our main project was the construction of a pizza oven from scratch, using available resources from the finca – stones for the base, and clay and coconut fibre for the actual oven dome. We had no prior experience on this, but Ulrich and Lis gave us some initial reading/watching materials, enough time for doing our own research, and a lot of freedom balanced with the necessary amount of advice for this to be a super successful experience. We made a beautiful and functional oven and learnt a lot about the materials and the construction process along the way. Other minor projects were wood polishing and varnishing, plant nursery work, and the repairing of a cracked kayak with a temperature gun and HDPE plastic – all of which were interesting tasks from which we developed new skills!

- THE PEOPLE: We were initially welcomed by Melisa and Luciano, the managers of the place who also run the restaurant. They immediately made us feel like at home, and that feeling accompanied us throughout our whole stay. They showed us the place and its secrets with passion and we shared many very special moments. Lis and Ulrich arrived a few days later, and we got to spend some awesome weeks together. They instilled us with their motivation for the several projects we were involved in, showed real appreciation for our work and cared for us to have a good work/play balance. They took us around to explore the area on several occasions and went the extra mile for helping us in our journey even afterwards! Leo and his family, the caretakers of the place, were also wonderful people to have around, always with a smile and willing to give us a skilful hand whenever needed. Last but not least, Capitán and Mazoo contributed to a very happy stay with their morning greetings, hilarious playful moments, and unconditional love.

Each of these elements would be worth doing a WorkAway on its own, so imagine if you put them all together. We went for one month, ended up staying 6 weeks, and could very easily have extended even further if visa expiry and the next chapter in our adventure had not been knocking on the door! After 6 weeks in paradise, we left with unforgettable memories, incredible natural encounters, new friendships, and very useful learnings and new skills. Oh, and a second super-cool WorkAway lined up in California with Lis and Ulrich, who also took the time to contact their friends in Hawaii to organise another exchange – which is currently being yet another total blast! We are eternally grateful to you guys and are looking forward to meeting you again somewhere sometime in the future :)

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Sea Turtle and Evironmental ...)

Our one-month stay here was our very first experience as workawayers, and it truly couldn't have been more fulfilling. Why? Here we go:

THE PLACE: to put it simple, it's just paradise for nature lovers. The house is literally a minute away from a beautiful, long, and solitary beach, surrounded by vegetation and trails through the jungle. Plenty… read more of amazing creatures - underwater (bring a snorkelling mask, please!), on the land, and in the air. There is something new to discover everyday if you keep your eyes and ears open. From our personal experience we can say that if you spend enough time here you might get lucky and see even more animals than in some of the tours in the Corcovado natural park.

THE PEOPLE: Brisa and Esteban are doing an outstanding job at recruiting volunteers, managing the project, and sharing their knowledge about the surroundings they're so well-adapted to. They care for the people they host and they ensure to build a harmonious environment for comunal living. People at this place not only work together, but also cook in teams that vary daily, have communal meals, and often spend free time doing something fun together (hiking, snorkelling, learning how to cook Costa Rican dishes and how to make coconut oil from scratch, watching movies or documentaries on the projector...). This also provides the opportunity to get to know well other volunteers, who, in our experience, are like-minded people that care for the environment, enjoy nature, and have many interesting stories and conversations to share. We're very grateful for being part of the whole family and for having met a bunch of its awesome individuals.

THE WORK: obviously mainly outdoor and generally with some degree of physical tasks, but also with the possibility to do more "office-like" work such as contributing to the social media and website content of the project or artistic activities such as painting. We've done many different kinds of work, most of them making use of the natural resources around the house: construction work with bamboo, seeding and transplanting trees for the agriculture project, remodelling the entrance of the finca with rocks and gravel sand... so many useful learnings! Around once a week there's also a beach clean-up, and we've been using the shamefully large amount of plastic bottles that we find to build a fence-wall for a greenhouse that is looking great [This description relates to the kind of activities performed during the turtle off season].

THE OUTCOME: we've gained new and useful skills, become fitter, learnt a lot about Costa Rican nature and culture, had a lot of fun, and fallen in love with this place and these people, now Friends. We consider ourselves blessed for having spent one month here.
