Igal took us in very spontaneously, we had some easy work to do and the artists house is quite nice (much more progressed than shown on the photos). Although our stay was quite short we had some inspiring conversations. We felt very free about the work and around the house.

Igal is one of life’s characters to say the very least! What a fascinating person and amazing company. Myself and my friend, Cat, had the pleasure of being Igal’s first volunteers and we couldn’t be more grateful that he was willing to have us in such strange times.

Travel restrictions were just starting to be lifted when we were looking for… read more potential projects, but hosts weren’t exactly keen given the circumstances around Covid 19. Igal had only just arrived back in Portugal himself after making a crazy longwinded journey from Tel Aviv in order to escape the confines of lockdown in a stuffy city.

Back in his countryside haven in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Igal was keen to crack on with tidying up his budding art residency. This place is the dictionary definition of quirky! Full of random ornaments and art pieces both old and new and organic and manmade, there’s something really special about it.

Our main tasks were to clear the back yard of old tiles and debris from years of neglect, and to tackle the issue of the gaping hole in one of the bedroom walls! This was to become a tall window overlooking the lovely countryside, but it was a mammoth task bigger than any of us anticipated.

We got all the materials we needed and, using the sand and cement Igal still had from his own house renovation down the road, and what amateur means/primitive tools we had, myself and Cat managed to install four concrete lintels into the old decrepit walls of the room. It was thoroughly satisfying work and a fantastic project to get stuck into.

We had originally agreed to stay a week as he wasn’t sure we would even attempt the window job but, once that was underway, we obviously were committed to finishing it and we ended up extending for a couple of extra days. Until we started on the window, the yard clearing work was done at our own pace from 9am ‘til 2pm and, with us being his first ever volunteers, Igal was completely open to whatever suited us and left us to our devices. He provided whatever food we wanted and we had the evenings and place to ourselves.

We had the pleasure of having a couple of evenings and lunches at his own fantastic house he’d previously renovated, and the funniest and most memorable conversations. We’ll definitely be back to visit and to fully enjoy the area Igal was so keen to show us if it only it wasn’t for the limitations imposed by the virus.

I can’t thank him enough or recommend working/staying with him and seeing this beautiful region. Oh and the first day he bought us lunch and brought us to the beach which is only 20mins away!
