    Current need:

We have just completed a waymarking project close to Demre and will not be doing any more fieldwork until next spring.
However, we have also established a base in a small house in Sidyma, between Fethiye and Kınık. We have done most of the work renovating the house but there is more to do: mainly carpentry (making and/or fitting doors, making shelves, etc) plus some outdoor work (garden, steps, cladding on outside of house). The house is at the edge of Sidyma village, and has 2 rooms, kitchen and bathroom. It's right next to the Lycian Way and the ruins; there are many other paths to explore. If you would like to live in Sidyma and help on the house during the winter, please get in touch for a zoom call.

    ABOUT US:

Our society aims to maintain Turkey’s 22 existing culture routes, to encourage the establishment of new trekking trails, and to set standards for the best practises for their development.

Culture routes are a means of deepening cultural understanding—both within Turkey, where city-dwellers are separated by space and life-style from their rural past, and by showing international trekkers aspects of Turkey’s culture that would normally find difficult to access. The Society brings benefits to the areas through which the routes pass, by involving local people in the routes, especially in identifying old roads and by offering them the chance to host trekkers in their homes and pensions.

Turkey's first long-distance trail was the Lycian Way, launched in 1999; it runs between Fethiye and Antalya in SW Turkey. User numbers grew rapidly and thousands of people have enjoyed this trail; it encouraged other enthusiasts to establish trails too. There are now 18 culture routes in Turkey, and we are developing more.

We have just finished the first stage of an ambitious project to develop a long-distance route which links Europe to Asia. Starting in Canterbury, UK, the Via Francigena runs all the way to Rome. The new project will extend it to Bari, then across the Adriatic to Albania then Macedonia and Greece before entering Turkey. It will finish at Demre, on the south coast of Turkey. We are now preparing for other projects in different areas of Turkey.

Our house at Sidyma will be a base for volunteers helping on clearing paths in the area.

The fieldwork group will be very mixed - Turkish, English, Italian, Danish, etc. So the volunteers can practice these languages and make new friends. Time off near Demre, which has an historic museum, historic site, beach with turtles, etc.

    Arbeit

We usually have 2 types of need: office work and field work.
Field work is required when we need to make or renew way-marks, finding new paths, cutting and clearing scrub, etc. We have a new fieldwork project starting September 17th. Check the dates and see if you can come.
We won't take any office workaways until October. Office work generally involves website and social-media maintenance, RU-EN-DE-TR translations, organising events, etc.

    Unterkunft

Fieldwork will take place in a small village close to Demre and the sea. Ruins of Byzantine churches in the hills around here. Shared accommodation in a village house or camping. Prepare your own food, mainly vegetarian.

Our office is in the centre of Antalya, close to the old town (Kaleiçi) where there are shops, museums, swimming areas, places to eat and drink, etc. We have a room for 2 people inside the office with bathroom, kitchen, etc. and a garden.

The fieldwork is in a quiet, small village in the hills, but plenty to do on your days off.
Our office is close to all city transport. Antalya has airport bus station, tram within easy reach of our office. There are plenty of places to visit around Antalya.
