Update: The corona situation in Bulgaria is the following:
-non-EU citizens/residents are not allowed into the country
    - EU citizens/residents can enter but those, arriving from the UK, Sweden and Portugal are put under 2-week quarantine.

Workawayers welcome from now til early August.

Danish/Bulgarian family, part-time residents in the village of Vrav, Bregovo Municipalicy, Vidin District, Bulgaria. The village is on the Danube river (EuroVelo 6).
We are hobby wine-makers and recycling enthusiasts. We have a lot of renovation, gardening and clearing tasks, so bring your work clothes and comfortable shoes :-)

We can offer you free accommodation and 3 meals a day, in exchange of 5 hours work a day, 5 days a week. Or, if you prefer to work on a 25-hours a week schedule (and decide yourself the hours), we can also do that.
You can also work less hours a day, if you take care of some of your meals.

We are a family of 4, with two teenage boys, and we normally host several workawayers at the same time, so it is very important that you get along with other people and that you are flexible. The tasks might change from day to day (or during the day), all depending on the wheather, logistics or our (the hosts’) own availability/being busy with other tasks. Also, most of the projects we’ve started on, or will start with you, are of the “never-ending”/“no end in sight” variety, so you have to be ok with that :-)

You'll get to try our wines from previous years, as well as Bulgarian (or Serbian wines). You will learn about the whole wine-making cycle, the fermentation process, local grape variaties and various wine terms.
You’ll meet our fellow villagers (both Bulgarian and foreing) and experience the local folklore.
We like long dinners, good conversations, comparing cultural experiences, discussing world and national politics and recent history.

There will be a lot of gardening work, like vegetation control and landscaping.
We’ll also be doing some other work outside, like sorting different building materials that can be re-used, fixing fences, cutting tree branches, grinding branches (with a machine) and making woodchips, etc.
If the weather is bad, we can so some painting inside.
Let us know if you are extra handy with power tools or have carpenting, etc experience, and we’ll easily find you a project.

Work is hard (you will really feel it in your bones and muscles) so we hope you are in a good physical shape, and/or that you like being outside and maybe have some previous experience (growing up on a farm😉, perhaps?) otherwise you might hate it, or find it too hard.

It gets extremely hot in the summer, so the productive working hours are basically in the 8-10 and 16-19 o’clock range. If you’re not a morning person or prefer having two/more days a week off, so you can travel/explore nearby, let’s coordinate in advance the workload and meals plan (e.g. less hours if you take care some of your meals).

Comfortable beds in a separate house with inside toilet and shower. As a rule, you will get a room for yourself, but there might be another/other workawayer/s in the house. Fridge and cooker in the house or access to kitchen amenities in another place.

Internet access in the house/s can be limited (we have two mobile internet solutions, which we could lend you, but the mobile cover in the village varies a lot, so connection is not stable. The mobile internet is also limited to 25 or 35 GB (so streaming is not advisable). You can always use the internet in/around our house during the day hours/early evening (it’s cable). If you want to watch an important football game on the tv, or borrow a DVD player and films, we can help you with that. Please, bring your own tablet and laptop.

Joint dining (lunch/dinner) at our house, as a rule. Breakfast could be at our house, or separately (we’ll provide the food supply). Some of the dinners could be with some of the other villagers. We are meat-lovers ourselves, but if you have special preferences, we’ll make sure to provide other choices or agree with you to take care of your own cooking (and bring food to the common meals).
If you are vegans or smokers, please stock up before you arrive, as the choices in the local shops are limited or non-existent.

The village is on the Danube, so visiting the beach of walking along the river bank is a nice past-time. The river current is very strong, so consider well before going for a swim!
There are two shops in the village (no cigarettes sale, though).
It is possible to buy from the villagers eggs from free-range chickens and goat/sheep cheese, as well as some seasonal vegetables. There is no ATM in the village and the nearest one (in the neighbouring village) doesn’t always work, so plan your cash situation before you arrive.

On your days off, you could plan excursions in the area.
We can lend you an old/well-used bike for daily use. The dirt streets in the village don’t make for a pleasant ride (and often further damage the bikes), but it should be good enough for short rides (within 5-10 km radius).
If you want to do picnics or BBQ/camp-fire at the beach, we can help with with some equipment.
In Novo selo (5km away) there is a municipal sports complex, with a tennis court and a basketball court (you can lend the sports equipment from us), as well as a swimming pool (mostly free use but the access rules change from year to year). There are two wine cellars in Novo selo (one of which is planning a wine-tasting spot soon), and a couple of beaches (one in the village center, and one outside).

The distance to the Serbian boarder is only 12 km, and 25 km to Negotin, which the closest provincial town on the Serbian side.

Vidin, which the district town on the Bulgarian side (30km from the village), offers several sightseeing options, including the Baba Vida Fortress and the Konaka town museum. There is a nice town garden/alleys along the river, with restaurants (including fish restaurants on the water).
We go often to Vidin for shopping or eating out, so we could definitely give you a lift for free, if you are flexible with working around our schedule. Otherwise there is a bus line (not too often) or taxis.
A bit longer distance but definitely worth visiting in the Vidin district are Belogradchik (a small town surrounded by stone formations and a breathtaking 360˚ view from the medieval castle) and the Magura Cave.
