We welcome workawayers right now :-)!

We need helping with vegetation control and other practical help outside.

We are a Danish/Bulgarian family, part-time residents in the village of Vrav, Bregovo Municipalicy, Vidin District, Bulgaria. The village is on the Danube river (EuroVelo 6).
We are hobby wine-makers and recycling enthusiasts. We have a lot of renovation, gardening and clearing tasks, so bring your work clothes and comfortable shoes 🙂

We can offer you free accommodation and 3 meals a day, in exchange of 25-hours a week schedule. You can also work less hours a day/per week, if you take care of some of your meals.
Please, let us know on what kind of budget you are travelling and what do you hope to get out of staying with us, so we can align expectations.
If you are hard-working and want to help more, but you don’t have a budget to travel/explore the surroundings, we can agree on some “bonus system”, or dedicate some of our time/resources to show you around. Or, if you don’t want to work that much, but are looking for a place to rest/recharge a bit, and you have the funds to cover some of your meals, we can also agree on a reduced schedule that is different than that of the other workawayers.

We are a family of 4, with two teenage boys, and we normally host several workawayers at the same time, so it is very important that you get along with other people and that you are flexible/tolerant to other prople’s views and lifestyles.
Also, the tasks might change from day to day (or during the day), all depending on the wheather, logistics or our (the hosts’) own availability/being busy with other tasks, so you have to be ok with that, too. Some of the work sessions are with all workawayers but we’ll also have some individual tasks for you (working alone).

You'll get to try our wines from previous years, as well as Bulgarian (or Serbian wines). You will learn about the whole wine-making cycle, the fermentation process, local grape variaties and various wine terms.
You’ll meet our fellow villagers (both Bulgarian and foreing) and experience the local folklore.
We like long dinners, good conversations, comparing cultural experiences, discussing world and national politics and recent history.

    Arbeit

There will be a lot of gardening work, like vegetation control and landscaping.
We’ll also be doing some other work outside, like sorting different building materials that can be re-used, fixing fences, cutting tree branches, grinding branches (with a machine) and making woodchips, etc.
If the weather is bad, we can do some painting inside.
Let us know if you are extra handy with power tools or have carpenting, etc experience, and we’ll easily find you a project. We really like recycling/upcycling, and we have loads of reclaimed wood, and many other materials.
Plus, there might be a few demolition/stripping old paint projects, or plastering/masonry (if you’re good at that?)

    Unterkunft

Farm-type/rural accommodation. Comfortable beds in a separate house with inside toilet and shower. You might be sharing house/room with another/other workawayer/s . Fridge and cooker in the house or access to kitchen amenities in another place.

We’ll lend you a mobile (3G) internet modem to use in the house/s where you’ll be staying, but since the mobile cover in the village varies a lot, the connection is not always stable. The mobile internet solution is also limited to around 60 GB, so if you are used to streaming 😉 or being generally online all the time, this stay in the deep countryside won’t be optimal for you, so be mentally prepared for a partial “digital detox”.
We can borrow you a DVD player and a range of films, as well as books in English. Please, bring your own tablet or laptop.

Eating arrangements: As a rule, we aim for joint dining (lunch/dinner) at our house. But whenever there are a lot of workawayers at the same time, we understand if some want to take the occasional break from the rest. Please, let us know in advance about your socializing habits or social quirks, and we can devise a schedule that fits all of us. Breakfast could be at our house, or the house, where you are staying.
Some of the dinners could be with some of the other villagers or our extended family/visiting friends.
We are meat-lovers ourselves, but if you have special preferences, we’ll make sure to provide other choices or agree with you to take care of your own cooking (and bring food to the common meals).
If you are vegans or smokers, please stock up before you arrive, as the choices in the local shops are limited or non-existent.

The village is on the Danube, so visiting the beach of walking along the river bank is a nice past-time. The river current is very strong, so consider well before going for a swim!
There are two shops in the village (no cigarettes sale, though).
It is possible to buy from the villagers eggs from free-range chickens and goat/sheep cheese, as well as some seasonal vegetables. There is no ATM in the village and the nearest one (in the neighbouring village) doesn’t always work, so plan your cash situation before you arrive.

On your days off, you could plan excursions in the area.
We can lend you an old/well-used bike for daily use. The dirt streets in the village don’t make for a pleasant ride (and often further damage the bikes), but it should be good enough for short rides (within 5-10 km radius).
If you want to do picnics or BBQ/camp-fire at the beach, we can help with with some equipment.
In Novo selo (5km away) there is a municipal sports complex, with a tennis court and a basketball court (you can lend the sports equipment from us), as well as a swimming pool (mostly free use but the access rules change from year to year). There are two wine cellars in Novo selo (one of which is planning a wine-tasting spot soon), and a couple of beaches (one in the village center, and one outside).

The distance to the Serbian boarder is only 12 km, and 25 km to Negotin, which the closest provincial town on the Serbian side. (NB ** At present, travelling to Serbia is not feasible, as on re-entry into Bulgaria, you will need to show a negative PCR test result)

Vidin, which the district town on the Bulgarian side (30km from the village), offers several sightseeing options, including the Baba Vida Fortress and the Konaka town museum. There is a nice town garden/alleys along the river, with restaurants (including fish restaurants on the water).
We go often to Vidin for shopping or eating out, so we could definitely give you a lift for free, if you are flexible with working around our schedule. Otherwise there is a bus line (not too often) or taxis.
A bit longer distance but definitely worth visiting in the Vidin district are Belogradchik (a small town surrounded by stone formations and a breathtaking 360˚ view from the medieval castle) and the Magura Cave.

Any campervan size is fine. We’ve actually had one workaway couple sleeping in their van in the yard and using the facilities in one of the houses, and it worked out fine.
