Hi! I am Mahmoud Hammad and I am a local Bedouin tour guide in Wadi Rum, a beautiful desert in the South of Jordan.

I operate an authentic Bedouin camp in the desert and together with my team I offer various excursions by camel, by foot or by jeep. Our clients spend between half days and whole weeks with us in the desert.

Our camp is situated in the heart of the Wadi Rum protected area (recently named an UNESCO site). As a member of the Zalabia Bedouin tribe, I am proud to share my heritage that has been a part of this landscape for hundreds of years. We offer to our guests, as well as our Workaways, a private camp with clean washroom facilities and electricity. We offer various styles of sleeping accommodations, whether in one of our Bedouin tents, under the stars by a slow burning campfire, or in our house in the small village also inside of Wadi Rum. We have guests come to our camp from as close as Amman, Jordan's capital city, to as far as Tokyo.

The natural beauty of Wadi Rum is why so many world travelers choose Wadi Rum - for us it is so important to keep our homeland as natural and unspoiled as possible. We are preserving a landscape for our children, and the children of the world to enjoy for years to come. We hope you will fall in love with Wadi Rum, and in it find a family of people as interesting and diverse as the beautiful desert landscape.

For those taking a gap year, a school holiday, or even enjoying their retirement, this is an excellent low-cost option to explore a new environment, as well as develop skills in small business management within the ecotourism market environment.

The most important quality in a volunteer is someone who loves the desert and will take care of our landscape. We want to take the least from the earth while creating the best experience possible for our many guests. Currently we are looking for someone skilled in web development to help with development of our website (knowledge of SEO and creating affective CTA's is a plus) We are also looking for someone to assist us in setting up and create a manageable system for an effective social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc) and review aggregator (Yelp, TripAdvisor, etc) presence, on appropriate platforms. Our clients are our biggest asset as we want to make them our best voice in marketing to the ecotourism community.

    Unterkunft

There are three types of accommodation.

    1. Staying in a traditional Bedouin tent. Technologically, these tents have come a long way in terms of modernization and structure. Unlike the tents of old, ours are made with safe and sturdy materials, while still being insulated by traditional Bedouin sewn fabric made from goat fur. This material is remarkable for its ability to keep a tent cool in the summer and warm in the winter months. These tents are also electricity equipped, so you can charge your devices.

    2. Sleeping under the stars. In the evening we create a small fire, around which we enjoy a very sweet Bedouin tea sharing the stories of our day. We, and even many of our guests like to set up a bed near the fire and sleep out under the stars. (An incredible experience during the many meteor showers seen in the dark of the desert.

*️️️️️️Our camp has running hot water and private restroom facilities.

    3. Staying at our home in the village. Just a few minutes drive from our camp location is our village, where most of the Bedouin people take up permanent residence. Here you will come to do work on the computer (wifi access is limited in the desert) as well as enjoy dinner with my family, getting a chance to experience an intimate view into the lives of our people.

We prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for you. Most of the time we serve traditional food, vegetarian is also possible.

While Wadi Rum could keep you occupied for months on end, (alas, we've devoted our whole lives to this land) there is a great deal to see and do in Jordan, and Wadi rum provides an excellent home base for venturing out via the many tour busses that depart from the village visitor center. Typically the least expensive flights into Jordan are through Amman airport, from which you can take a taxi directly to the camp for 90JD (Jordanian Dinar), or a bus during the daytime hours for only 20JD.
