Qechua Community in the Andes of Cusco

Hello to you all, we founded a travel agency in Cusco, the archeological capital of South America. But we are not only a travel agency, but something more.
We offer tours around the whole region to Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain and the National Park Manu among other trips. Furthermore, we contribute to the society, especially for the children. So why did we decide to found this place?
As you may know, in a lot of parts of this world people are used to living at temperatures of around or under freezing point and with resistance. The inhabitants and local authorities of these places guarantee technological tools like efficient communication devices, heating systems in their houses and warm winter clothes. In wide areas of South America, situated at more than 4000 metres above sea level, all of this cannot be taken for granted and not everybody can afford this earlier mentioned equipment. They neither have the necessary economic resources, nor can their government secure an adequate supply for the population. Widespread malnutrition is another huge problem, which makes a children development very difficult and furthermore the freezing cold makes an everyday school life very complicated for them.
As a result, the people concerned have a great disadvantage within the society and cannot fulfil themselves outside of their villages.
We cannot turn away from these kind of problems, which makes our decision clear to establish our place.
We give a helping hand where the central and local administration does not gain any access. We do our best to change for better the circumstances of the children, which must not remain unnoticed, but give them a perspective for their future and contribute to their integration within the society.

First of all, by wish of the local community, we cannot not accept men neither couples.

IMPORTANT: At the moment we are looking for medical doctors (M/F) at all time, who are willing to stay 1-2 weeks to check the health condition of the children.

We are looking for volunteers which adapt easily, can multi-task and are willing to experience what it means to be part of a beautiful native-andean community.

We are mainly looking for 2 different types of volunteers:

    1. *️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️TEACHING
    > English Teaching : Our main work in the school, from Monday to Thursday are daily English classes from 2 pm to 3 pm in the afternoon.
    > Arts, Music, Physical Education: There is a school curriculum with the local teachers Olga and Lis. But the kids don't really have the opportunity to experience Arts, Music, PE etc. If you have some skills to share with the kids you are very welcome. Like for example, taekwondo, origami, playing a music instument, yoga, etc. Tell us about you and your ideas and we will try to arrange something.

You can be a part of the community to interact with the kids and the people. Sometimes the parents can't make it to come to school to cook lunch, in this case you need to cook for the children (of course the teachers will help you), or sometimes when the pupil fight you need to spend some time with them talking. Basically you are there as a part of the school and the community to serve and help these fabulous children.

    The school schedule
6:30 Getting up and preparing breakfast.
    8:00 Breakfast
    9:00 Beginning of the classes
    12:00 Lunch until 13:00
    13:00 Classes
    14:00 ENGLISH CLASSES for 1hr
15:00 The students go back home
Sometimes the kids stay at school overnight with their friends and the two teachers. In the afternoon you can spend the time together if you want to.
To understand and teach better, we require to stay at least 3 months which is one semester in the school plan.

    2. *️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️SPECIALISTS

What we are also searching for are professional people like psychologists, medical doctors & dentists who could help us fullfill a study about the place where we are having an education-programm in teaching English. The study is important for the project to provide the help that is needed on-site. You will have a lot of talks while visiting the communities in the Andes, speak with the families, but mostly observe and interact with the local people to get an impression of their way of living, their culture, their kind of problems and why they are suffering from them to find a way to help these people on a long term basis, especially the children.
Recomended stay: Minimum 1 to 2 weeks

The community also needs a nutritionist to improve the situation in terms of food. Basically their meals are based on carbs like potatos most of the time, and recently with the support from the municipal government they have a greenhouse which they are still not using. That's why they need more information about how to consume a balanced diet.
    Recomended stay: Minimum 2 weeks

Furthermore, we are also searching for people who really know how to create and work with websites and Wordpress. Even better if you have experience in taking photography and have a good camera.
So if you are interested, please contact us.
    Minimum stay: 1 week

We recommend you to speak basic Spanish because nobody speaks English in the community. The people mostly speak Quechua and some of the children, especially the youngest ones, are learning Spanish for the first time at school. Most importantly you need to be very sociable and pacient. We prefer women over 20, yet social work is mostly easier with girls and they win confidence with the children fastly.

One point that really matters to us:
We do not invade nor intervene with the local people. We also do not try to missionize and have no political agenda nor do we follow a certain ideology. We are respectfull and we fully respect the local culture and habits of the natives - and so should you. Consider that before contacting us. Be always polite and understanding.
Our role here is passive and we observe more than we interact. What we are trying to do is helping them to help themselves and equalize their rights of education and healthcare.

The volunteer lives in the school, the room is inside the classroom and there’s a wall to divide the place. You will have your own bed and during the week days the teacher stay in the school as well.

You will share breakfast and dinner with the teacher and all the kids have lunch together in school. Most of the meals are vegetarian and if you want you can bring your own food like snacks, bread, coffee and fruits and enjoy your tea time:) The thing is you will need to make wood fire to cook, but they all share together and most of the time you don’t need to cook.

On the weekend you can travel to Cusco or Quillabamba which is located about 2~3 hours from the community in order to take a rest. On weekend you still have accommodation but no food. But in Cusco you can cook in our kitchen and there are plenty of good restaurants near by.

We mostly move around by car, but recommend to take the public transport in the city to avoid traffic. The city of Cusco is really beautiful and if you want to get to know it to it's core you are in safe hands with two professional tour guides on your side. To get to the community and back there are always busses on the road.
