We are a family of four, Nick, Arana, Minnow (15) and Bruni (11), located in the idyllic valley of Lorinna; an active, vibrant rural community with a strong co-operative ethos, frequent communal events and working bees, a food co-op, abundant wildlife and wonderfully clean soil, air and water.

We live in a self-built tiny house on a shared property with several other households with whom we share work and resources and a stand-alone photovoltaic and micro-hydro power system.
Our children are homeschooled with a free-range natural learning approach.

Visitors will get to experience the unique joys of living in a remote, beautiful, off-grid community and the opportunity to learn about natural building, growing food, partnering with nature and working together.

We want your stay to be exciting and educational and are very happy to take the time to share any skills we have and for you to pursue your particular interests.

Nick is a keen artist and specialises in printmaking and sculpture. Arana has studied architecture, ecology and permaculture. We are both passionate about sustainability, creativity, good food and living a rich, responsible, joy-filled life. We are also increasingly passionate about building landscape and community scale climate change preparedness.

We are currently building an outdoor kitchen with a living roof, a solar dehydrator and a massive stone and glass greenhouse. There is no expectectation that you join in building activities, however, we are very happy to introduce you to different building techniques, show you examples of natural building projects and teach you what we know.

We like to balance work with play and are outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Arana works as a ranger on the Overland Track and we have both worked as guides in the nearby Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park. We have white water kayaks, sea kayaks, bikes and bushwalking equipment which you may be able to borrow.

  • Arbeit

    Arbeit

We primarily need help with gardening, landscaping, helping around the house or playing and learning with the children.

Other tasks we may need help with include planting trees, ecological restoration on the property, chopping firewood, creating art projects, making compost and helping out with projects and events in the wider community. In the coming years we are also planning on expanding our medicinal and food producing syntropic agroforestry systems on the land and continuing to build climate resilience and abundance. This is not a commercial operation, everything we do is entirely not for profit and all our activities are focussed on growing beauty and nutrient-filled, life giving food for our family, our guests and our community and on supporting land stewardship and ecological thriving.

Every Saturday we work in the mornings on a shared communal project

Accommodation is in a bedroom in the tiny house or a comfortable bell (glamping) tent. Please be aware that we are fully off grid and have a composting toilet and limited hot water

We live together in a small space and ask that visitors keep casual phone use to private spaces and outside to contribute to a social and engaged ambiance in the shared living space.

We have a lot of exciting projects on the go and many skills to share and would be particularly keen to hear from helpers with a genuine passion for learning about permaculture, syntropy and off grid living. We would also love to hear from anyone who would be interested in helping out with homeschooling activities with the kids.

It is essential to us that helpers chip in with cleaning and cooking and contributing to a sense of teamwork and mutual support and fun.

In summer we swim in Lake Cethana or our new dam every afternoon. When the weather gets cooler we enjoy cosying up and playing card and board games.

Meals are vegetarian with an emphasis on wholefoods and local and organic ingredients. We're very happy to accommodate gluten-free, vegan or other dietary preferences or requirements

Happy to organise pick up from Devonport, Launceston and sometimes Hobart.
