We are an NGO working with the refugees in Velika Kladuša, next to the Croatian border. There are around 500 people in an informal settlement and our aim is to provide showers, food and clothes on a daily basis. We are working outside of the state controlled camps, which means that we have no support from the government, all our resources come from individual donations. Even though the main work are the distributions, there are quite a few essential tasks running in the background like washing the clothes, sorting the warehouse, general maintenance at home, basic plumbing works, ... Also, if you are good at repairing, building, plumbing stuff you are more than welcome to come!
Keep in mind that we are working independently from the other camps and, sometimes, the situation can be complicated. The worst days, the pressure we have to cope with is quite high, because of the authorities and other problems arised by the refugees.

You will learn the true story about what the refugees, mostly coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan have to go through to get to Europe. How many countries they have to cross in all the imaginable ways, how many times they have beaten up, robbed... for no reason. This is something the media is not talking about, the EU doesn't care and that's why NGOs like ours are here.
We have a weekly schedule with the different tasks we perform, showers, clothes exchange, medical care (in case you have the knowledge), activities with the kids, sorting the warehouse,... We have a shift system, which means that at the end of the week you will have taken part in all the different tasks.
Ideally, we prefer people with experience in working with refugees and in a border area, since the situation can be tricky sometimes. If not, don't worry, we have a welcome pack where there's all the info necessary to have a picture of the situation and the day you get here there will be a brief introduction as well.
We need people who can stay at leas one month, most of timmes more than one.

We have a house where the volunteers sleep. It's a small one, so you will either have to share the bedroom or living room with other people. We always try to be a maximum of 7 people so there's a certain harmony at home. All together we keep the house clean and everyday there's one or two people who cook for the rest.
We usually cook together at home for lunch, but dinner is normally on your own because we are spread around the town at that time
As a group, we work every day, but it's absolutely fine to take a day off or even a few days and travel around the area. Please notice this is not a usual kind of workaway, we work more hours and days than the average, we provide the accommodation but the cost of the food is on the volunteers. We are a small NGO and our donors expect us to use all the donations for the refugees, so unfortunately we can't provide food for volunteers. Besides this, there's a really good vibe at home, which gives this plus of energy to work on a daily basis. The days go by quite fast with all the tasks we need to do, but at night we meet together to have dinner and drinks around the fire.
