Beschreibung
We are a bi-lingual and bi-cultural British/Italian family made up of Charlotte, Claudio and our two children (aged 17 and 15). Our family lives in the small hilltop village of Montefegatesi in the Apennine mountains in northern Tuscany. Charlotte is a part-time teacher and also helps in the family building business. As well as building, Claudio teaches judo, volunteers with the Red Cross and is very involved with the local community. We also spend quite a lot of time taking the kids to their various activities and having family fun. Oh and in our spare time we are finishing building our new home! So, we have quite a bit going on.

We are looking for someone to help us out with the day to day running of our busy home and lives. We need someone to give us a hand with getting organised, cooking, laundry and keeping the house a bit tidy. We might also ask you to walk our lovely friendly dog Emma or have a cuddle with our cat Gnocchi.

I had a wonderful month in Montefegatesi. The village is perched on the top of a mountain, so as you can imagine the scenery was exquisite! It is a little isolated but this is what I loved about it; I felt myself really relax. There are buses that can take you into the towns nearby, so you aren’t trapped; also you can grab a lift with Charlotte… read more when she goes down, which is quite regularly. In the town, there is a convenience store and two bars so personal supplies and coffee are always close by! Phone service is limited but the main house and Charlotte’s office, which are 10 metres away, have great wifi, so it is easy to keep in contact with the world.
The Workawayers have a whole house to themselves! The house is very cosy with everything you need and a stufa to keep warm in the cooler months. The privacy was fantastic and you feel like you really have time to yourself. I was sharing the house with Mark, who has been a regular Workawayer for the family. I felt very lucky to be there at the same time as him as he showed me the ropes and cooked a few nice dinners too. Also, Claudio and Charlotte are both great cooks and we shared some delicious meals (and recipes) at their place. Cinghiali is a must!
Working times were very flexible. Charlotte’s main goal is for you to have a wonderful time! Communication regarding work was very clear and the work was very easy- ironing, cleaning and hanging with the kids.
Maddie and Giac are fantastic kids. They are very well-behaved, active, loving, creative and fun! Any time that I spent with them was a pleasure; it never felt like work. They are bi-lingual; it never ceased to amaze me to hear them change between Italian and English. Claudio speaks limited English but he tries very hard to have a conversation and he is very patient with you if you are trying to learn some Italian. He grew up in Montefegatesi. He and his family are very involved in the community and well-respected by all.
Then there is Charlotte! I adore this woman. She is so relaxed, kind, generous and she has a great way of thinking. We had some amazing conversations in which I learnt a lot about life and myself. She will continue to be a role-model for me and every time I hear a Dido song, I will think of her and her amazing smile with which she could use to sell ice to the Eskimo’s!
I felt very welcome; more like a part of the family.

This was actually my first workaway experience as a volunteer (I host also) and Charlotte basically rescued myself and my son after I had another workaway cancelled at the last minute (and was stranded in August in a very hot, booked-up Italy and had resorted to looking at early flights home!!)
I am so grateful to Charlotte for this as she had to juggle her own situation to accommodate us, such is her helpful way! Ultimately it worked out great that our circumstances changed and we found this family, because we have had a fantastic time and have come away as friends. The family all made so much effort to really welcome us into their lives right from the second we arrived. Charlotte and Claudio are true gems and are the kind of people the world needs more of. They are warm and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We were certainly very well looked after during our stay (which we extended although it still wasnt enough time, we could have stayed forever!!)
All of the work was fair, varied and manageable and I helped out with the kids, home, office, property changeover days and veggie garden. It really didn't seem like work as the family made it all such a pleasure.
Accommodation is great, you have your own house that is shared with other workawayers and has everything you need, including a washing machine which was very handy. Charlotte keeps the cupboards and fridge well stocked, and a few fresh bits from the garden appeared occasionally which was lovely too!!
The village is handy for exploring Lucca, Pisa and Florence during days off and there are many walks nearby.
The kids Maddie & Giac are great fun and have boundless energy. We had lots of laughs and my son really enjoyed spending time with them. They are impressively bilingual and Giac has the best imagination I've ever encountered, he entertained us no end with his humour. We had some great times playing at the swimming pool, going to the seaside and just hanging out at their home; plus we were very kindly invited to go along with them to a festa plus a locals evening get-together in the village and even a meal with extended family who were over from the UK on their holidays.
We are extremely grateful for the families' warmth, kindness and hospitality and can't thank them enough for such a wonderful Italian experience.
If you are looking for a fun workaway with varied work, lovely, down to earth genuine people in a stunning location, you have certainly found it.

I’m sure if Kirsten signs up again she’ll love to leave her own feedback but for now I can… read more easily speak for both of us and say that we had the most amazing time with Charlotte and her family.

For me this was the first workaway experience and I had no idea to what to expect but it exceeded all expectations I could have had anyway. In terms of the work aspects, the work was very varied which suited me well. One day we’d help Charlotte clean and prepare one of the holiday villas she manages, the next day we would make lunch for the kids and play a board game with them, do arts and crafts or tidy up their bedroom. There was also some garden work which was not too difficult and enjoyable but personally, my allergies gave me massive problems when weeding and Charlotte proved to be the perfect host and found another task for me to do that day.

The family are absolutely great. Most of the time work didn’t feel like work at all especially when the kids were involved. Maddie and Giac have a tremendous amount of energy so you need to be prepared to keep up with that, but we loved it and they definitely helped us channel our inner children again. :) The most important thing is that they are good kids; I genuinely never had the feeling they were trying to get away with something they shouldn’t or make use of our relative “inexperience” (by that I mean never having raised a child and not having younger siblings either). Charlotte and Claudio are absolutely great and such an easy-going couple. I loved that the treated us like part of the family from the off and so we were included in family activities as well. Be it watching Claudio and his brother in a local football game or a camping trip with their Judo club, I felt that although we only stayed for three weeks we were really able to immerse ourselves into the life of this amazing and culturally diverse family.

The accommodation was perfect. We stayed in a house just around the corner which means that never really lost touch with the family life but when we wanted we were also able to have a quiet night and do our own thing in the evening. Charlotte provided all the food, while we would sometimes eat with the family (Charlotte’s food is great and healthy!) and sometimes cook for ourselves, where we often teamed up with the workawayers staying with Charlotte’s sister-in-law.

Having said all this, Kirsten and I can definitely recommend a stay with Charlotte’s family and would love to visit again someday. However, one thing future workawayers should keep in mind is that Montefegatesi is quite remote. While that suited us perfectly and Charlotte was always happy to arrange for us to get a lift into town to the train station on our days off, this might not always be possible, especially not during the winter. For me this was not a downside at all though and we loved to go hiking, enjoying the beautiful scenery and a quietness that you never be able to experience closer to the cities.

So to finally round this off, thank you so much to all for of you for allowing us into your homes during that unforgettable summer almost two years ago. Needless to say that all of you will be welcome to any home of mine as well, although I’m afraid that will probably be based in the rather boring East Midlands for the near future.

We loved having Lily living and working with us. She is bright, bubbly and fun, but also mature and responsible.
