I bought this 15 acre farm in November of 2015, so am in the beginning stages of rehabilitating it. No one farmed here or lived here year round for decades. My helper, Joshua, and I, have made much progress here. We are reestablishing cow pastures and gardens. The second floor of the house is only partly refinished. We are right in the center of Matinicus Island Plantation, so in walking distance to the shore all the way around. We are home to a dozen ducks, about a dozen chickens, two turkey hens, and four Jersey/Dexter dairy cows, as well as one snowshoe cat with a very outgoing personality, and two loaner cats that belong to one of my daughters. I am a grandmother with a passion for small farming.

Matinicus is a remote lobstering island. There are no paved roads here, no stores other than an in-home bakery and a gift shop in summer. Island culture is very independent, not like the rush of the mainland. There are bald eagles, one that has been eating right along side of my poultry in their pen. There are lobsters to eat, and if you are here during cider season, you can drink as much of it as you like. Eggs are plentiful on this farm, chicken eggs, duck eggs, and maybe turkey eggs, all for your dining pleasure. We make twig tea from the wild trees on the farm, some of them very medicinal as well as flavorful. All our animals are pastured outdoors and enjoy the sunny days just like we do, although the ducks really love the rain. In the cooler seasons, we heat with wood, and cook on wood. You can learn to use a wood cook stove, run all its drafts to get the best cooking or heating fire possible, and how to keep the chimney clean and safe. If my bees survived this winter, you may be able to learn a little about bees and honey. In fall, we can search for the native cranberries, summer brings wild red currants us. Wild skunk cabbage has many secrets to offer, and jack-in-the-pulpits pop up almost everywhere in the woods.

We need help with just about everything. The house needs some organizing and painting inside and out. We need a pole building constructed, The garden always needs help. The cow pasture needs clearing of dead trees and brush. The pasture fence always seems to need checking and vegetation trimmed off of it. The cows love to be spoken to and entertained, or fed treats of fruit or vegetable scraps, or apples in season. In autumn, there is cider to be made from the many wild apples on the island. We have just started out with bees, but not much to do there. We also hay some ocean side fields during summer. We use a two-wheeled walk-behind tractor with a sickle bar attachment, rake and collect the hay by hand with a hand made hay rake and pitch forks, then pile the loose hay into the hay barn by hand without baling it. We can always use help with that.

As an update, some progress has been made here on many of the projects. We are also looking for a long term helper.

There are extra bedrooms in the house, or you can camp if you enjoy that. We will provide meals, some of which will contain foods produced on the farm, others may be lobster or fish if you wish and it is lobstering season.

During your time off, you can walk on the trails to the shore, or enjoy two sandy beaches. There is a tiny one room library full of books, which has internet. We also have wifi at the farm that you can use. The bakery sells very tasty things, as well as soda and popsicles if you need a taste of the mainland. The night sky is full of bright stars most nights, and many mornings here are buried in fog.
