I had a brilliant experience at the farm! Frank and Alex were very friendly and patient with my imperfect German skills. As someone with no prior experience working with animals, I found working with the alpacas and llamas really fun, and it was a unique experience. The trip really helped me improve my German, and learn more about German politics
… read more and culture (I was on the farm in Feb and March 2025 during the German elections and Fastnacht/Karneval celebrations). I would absolutely recommend staying here!
I had a large room with plenty of storage, and shared a bathroom with 3 other people. Meals were provided by the host family 5 days a week, which were always delicious, and I had access to a small kitchen which was well stocked with ingredients to make meals for the other 2 days, breakfast, or a snack after work. Frank and Alex were very accommodating with regards to my dietary requirements.
I worked from 8:00 until 14:00, which gave me time in the afternoons and evenings to relax or go for a walk. The work itself wasn't too demanding; most days I was working on the farm (cleaning stables, training young alpacas for walking tours, collecting alpaca poo from the fields), with the occasion job washing the car, running the small gift shop, or cleaning inside the house.
On my free days, I visited Eltville, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Rüdesheim, Idstein, and Frankfurt. The host family had a good local knowledge of things to do in the area, and were happy to recommend places and events. The farm is in quite a remote location; it is a 15 minute walk from the nearest bus stop, and takes around 40 mins in total to reach the nearest railway station. The buses are once an hour.
Overall, I had an amazing time here; thank you Frank and Alex for letting me stay!

… read more sabor a curry. Molt variat.

My time and the experience I got here was nothing short of amazing. I spent just under 2 months here and Wow how the time went by! Thank you Alex and Frank for welcoming me into your home and sharing this beautiful setup you have going with me. Working closely with the animals was no doubt one of my favourite things. I miss them all already! I
… read more don't think many people can say that they have worked closely with such a unique selection of animals and so I consider myself so lucky for this.
The mornings usually started off with a friendly 'good morning' and a bit of a laugh as to 'how I slept' in German. Yes my Deutsch understanding and listening has improved quite well as i had to do a lot of that yet let's not mention the speaking part hehe. I will not forget the enthusiastic spirit that came along with doing the morning routine of stable cleaning.
Throughout my time here I visited Wiesbaden one too many times (the Biebrich Schloss is a must see!), the lovely old town of Mainz and along the Rhine in Rüdesheim and Eltville and of course the famous Kloster Erbabach sipping a glass or 2 of the sweetest wines. All are easily accessible by bus/ train.
I most certainly had a cultural experience of tasting an all round selection of Alex's soups of which all were very delicious no doubt. Thank you for all the good food (currywurst being a favourite)!
I loved hearing some of the weird and wonderful stories about your travels.. it was so interesting to me to hear about how different cultures do certain things. I am so grateful to have gotten to know some of the guides and FOJ's.. it was lovely to meet you all. Thank you Katarina for taking me riding, I really enjoyed it and I hope Naomi did too:) I wish you all the luck in your future endeavors and can see how passionationate you are about the animals. Thank you Beni for never missing an opportunity to pass on a joke.. I do think they're funny sometimes. Was lovely getting to know you and also hearing about some of your travels.
And so with all this said I highly recommend spending at least a month volunteering here and don't miss out on any of the yummy Sunday breakfast's (Also a favourite). You will no doubt have a memorable time here if you fully immerse yourself in all that this place has to offer!

Frank and Alex's place was a great experience. To work and be so close with the amount of unique animals is very rare, and I'm glad I can say now that I did it.

What an enchanting place! - a unique opportunity of a lifetime.
This host is exceptional in many ways. The family provides you with outstanding delicious meals - and lots of it, so you won't ever be hungry. You have your private apartment, fully equipped and with additional food. A good organization, work ethic and solid equipment allows you to
… read more have proper periods of free time while at the same time being really productive when at work. The farm is located in a valley in the forest. There are an abundance of nice trails through the forest and amazing views over the Rhine and the cities around (my favourite spot is 'Hedwig-Witte-Blick'). There are longterm volunteers, friends and guests around, so it's never lonely. The area has a lot of culture to offer, lots of castles and wine. And it's a hotspot of German carnival.
While this is all already quite amazing the real magic of this place comes from the animals living there. It's basically Workaway in a zoo. Next to looking at the animals you also might have to chance to go trekking with the Lamas and experience their calming aura touching your soul. More cheeky and lively are the Dromedaries, which are my personal favourites. I miss their kisses and unique attitude so much. There are also Labradors to walk, sheep to cuddle, parrots to talk to and pigs to play with in the mud...and lots of other animals, too.
It makes me very happy to see that on a professional farm (=making money with animals) the animals can be treated with such much love and commitment that they have a better life than at a sanctuary.
No doubt one of the best Workaway hosts you can find out there.
This was my tenth Workaway experience, I stayed for the months January and February and am grateful that the leap year 2020 giftet me a bonus day at this life-changing place.

Tips
- Speak a bit of German if you can
- Be sure to come with a cooking idea from your country :)
- Learn fast how to use the ranger (very cool mini car)
- Take a walk to the Closeby Kloster (you can do it while drinking home made wine)
- Camels are big caws but the small ones plays together

It is a labor work but not at all hard. I also have opportunities to cook several times. The room I got is a private room with a coffee machine. I also have a private bathroom (only share with guests during the day time). In your free days, there are many things you can do. You can visit Wiesbaden, Mainz, Frankfurt, Rudesheim, and many small towns along the Rhein. You can also do a boat tour! The house is situated in the forest which is very peaceful. We stayed for two weeks with Alex and Frank and enjoyed every minute there. The whole family is very warm-hearted, welcoming, open-minded and generous. They are all hard-working and full of passion for their animals. Food was always VERY delicious.
Our main-duty was gardening, but we also got the opportunity to help with the llamas and alpakas on

I stayed with this family in August and it was my first Workaway experience: I think there wouldn't have been a better way to get started!
They are a super loving family, always with a smile on their face and ready to have a good laugh, you can ask them anything and they will help you out.
I had my own bedroom with a fridge and coffee machine, a
… read more shared kitchen and a shared bathroom.
Work was five or six hours a day and it depends on what the family needs to be done ( all light stuff, by the way): I'd clean the tables, water the plants and open the toilets, then wait for the guests to arrive at the farm to go with them in the enclosure where the lamas and alpacas were: then the guests would walk the animals on the pathway through the woods and I would keep an eye on them.
The guests were all kind and the animals were lovely.
Then we'd eat lunch together and greet other guests or finish our work, that means clean the fields, feed the pigs, Guinea pigs or rabbits, or let the lamas and alpacas go back into the stable.
Alex is a superb cook: I loved her Kurbis-Ingwer Suppe, her Pilzesuppe , her chili and much more!
In the afternoon I would explore the surroundings, the beautiful village of Eltville, Wiesbaden or just walk through the woods.
I loved the animals, lamas, alpacas, camels ( Attila and Marie were so sweet) piggies, and the dogs too, Gronka, Molly, Ms Marple were always up for a good pet!
They even named one baby lama Lord Voldemort, as I suggested and gave me and the other two workawayers a goodbye gift!
As a conclusion, I don't think it could have been any better than this.

Thank you Alex and Frank for the 4 amazing weeks we shared with you and your family!!!
This was our first workaway experience and we can't think of how it could have been better. Alex and Frank were very welcoming. Everyone there really made us feel like part of the family.

The room we stayed it was big and very comfortable. It was great to have our private area and a cute dinning room inside for eating breakfast and dinner. The little shared kitchen has everything you need for cooking all kinds of meal.
The lunches at the house were always so tasty and Alex was always asking about our needs and the food we want to eat during the rest of the day.
Another great thing is that work is very well organized, you get all the tools and information you need and you're also asked to work the appropriate amount of hours. They also provide us shoes and clothes for working and not getting dirty. Rafael work all the days at the fields and the stable with Martin, an excellent and hardworking person. It was a pleasure to share with him at the work and also after works when we can share some beer and food, because he was always happy and making jokes with me and Rafael. I was working almost all the days with Alex at the trekking tours. She is a great person and really works with all her heart for all the animals she love :) I meet and shared with a lot of people at the trekkings, and if you want you can talk with them and learn new things when you are walking. I also enjoy felting with the kids, teach them and helping them with their artworks. The lamas and alpacas were so cute and lovely and I was so lucky because I had the opportunity to see the birth of one of them and also I named one newborn lama :)
Soooo... In summary I have to say: If you are thinking about staying with this family, don't hesitate, they are the best.

I only stayed for 10 days, but I really wish I could've stayed longer! I had an amazing time, and the entire family was so friendly and accepting. They also cook absolutely AMAZING food.
The work day is about 5-6 hours a day, and the work varies from helping with llama/alpaca trekking tours, to sorting out fibres, to gardening, etc.

I spent a little bit more than two weeks at this place, and it was obviously too short!!
The accommodation is great: own room with full-filled fridge, the work is not difficult nor long, which would let you free time to explore the region.
The area is really beautiful, with a lot (A LOT!) of grape fields. The closest city, Eltville, is only 15 to
… read more 20 minutes far, in bus or bicycle. You absolutely need to go there and walk along the Rhein during the summer. From there you could also access Wiesbaden and Mainz (my personal best) very fast, and from Wiesbaden, you can go to other cities like Frankfurt or Darmstadt.
Everybody is nice, the whole family and the neighbors as well. Everybody would communicate with you in english and they are almost every time in a good mood. They will spend time with you even though they are very busy with the farm and other stuff.
The work consisted to help cleaning the stable in the morning and helping with the trekking in the afternoon. I also did some small jobs as to store wood or paint some fences. You usually start at 8 am but you got a lot of free time in the afternoon.
Last but not least, the animals are fantastic! If you don't know nothing about lamas or alpacas, this is definitely the place to go. I now realize why there are so many people who want to have a walk with these animals. They are very friendly, peaceful creatures. I won't be surprise if many farms of this type open in the future.
I can't think of a reason not to go there.

I can't say enough good things about this Workaway experience. From before my arrival until well after the time I returned home, this host was phenomenal. I was included in all the joking, laughter and high energy moments this family shares, and they treated me like I belonged.
The on-site apartment was cozy, extremely clean and well-stocked, with amazing views of the surrounding areas and plenty of natural lighting. Work started late morning, and there was plenty of free time daily, with lots of opportunity to go into town or explore.
Expect a lot of walking in all kinds of conditions, and for the love of all things good and holy, bring excellent shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
The animals are all exceptional - very social, well mannered and super responsive, although, if you have any kind of problems with fur, dirt, noise, allergies or fears of large critters, this isn't the place for you. You'll mostly be walking with the llamas and alpaca, cleaning up after the barn animals, feeding everyone, helping with random (easy) household chores, and utilizing any special skills you have, like language instruction, animal training or ________ to help the family. This family is great, and the work isn't hard. They'll never ask you to do anything they won't do right by your side, or that they wouldn't do themselves.
In a nutshell, it was a magical, amazing experience, and I can't wait to return.
