The Nature Reserve is an 1,800ha off-grid reserve situated at the foot of Manutsa Mountain in South Africa’s beautiful Lowveld. The reserve is dedicated to making a positive impact on the local environment as well as on the local communities located around its borders. Our work is centered around protecting endangered species such as Cape Vultures and the natural environment they depend on, while empowering people through hands-on education, regenerative farming and practical skills that create pathways to employment.
The reserve is home to a pioneering Education Centre, a resident anti-poaching unit tasked with protecting wild fauna and flora, and a thriving permaculture garden that supplies both the lodge and local community with fresh produce.
The Nature Reserve is home to one of Africa’s largest breeding colonies of Cape Vultures, with more than 728 breeding pairs calling the cliffs their nesting grounds. Our work is built around three guiding pillars: Conservation, Education and Employment. Alongside protecting Cape Vultures and restoring their habitat, we run environmental education programme, create opportunities for surrounding communities and work towards building a more sustainable relationship between people and the natural environment.
Our skills-exchange volunteer programme gives volunteers the opportunity to become part of our team, learn new skills and share their own knowledge, skills and experiences with our local team and community.

A big part of the experience is getting to know and work alongside our local team. Our staff come from the surrounding communities, and volunteers work closely with them across different areas of the reserve. We value the exchange of skills, stories, ideas, cultures and perspectives that happens when people from different backgrounds come together and work towards a common goal.
Depending on your interests and experience, there are opportunities to learn about:
Permaculture and sustainable food production, including companion planting, soil health and other practical permaculture techniques.
Conservation and habitat restoration, working alongside our field guides on invasive species removal, trail management and other conservation activities.
Environmental education, including opportunities to assist with our six-week education programme for local learners. This is particularly suited to volunteers with teaching or educational experience.
Recycling and creative building, using available recycled materials to create practical items and infrastructure around the reserve.
Community events and workshops, where volunteers can get involved in helping us host monthly activities and share their own skills, knowledge and interests with guests and the local community.
Sustainable enterprise, including helping to grow, harvest and prepare produce and products from our permaculture garden for local farmers' markets.
We also encourage volunteers to bring their own skills and ideas. If you have a particular interest, skill or project that could contribute to the reserve, there may be an opportunity to develop it during your stay. We enjoy seeing volunteers bring their own creativity and experience to the project, and we are always open to new ideas that can benefit the reserve and the surrounding community.

Dear Workawayers, our sustainability project is based in the heart of the Lowveld on a beautiful private nature reserve and is in need of people with various skills and interests. We are all about Conservation, Education and Permaculture, while also creating opportunities for practical learning and community development.
We are looking for volunteers with skills or interests in gardening and permaculture, computer skills for basic use of Word and Excel for our skills exchange programme, English language training, education, sports development and mountain biking. There are also opportunities to help set up and maintain biking trails, our pump track and various trails around the property.
We are looking for people who are enthusiastic, willing to learn, happy to work as part of a team and interested in contributing to a meaningful sustainability project.
We are looking for people to join us for a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 10 weeks.
In exchange for 25 hours of work a week, you will be provided with food rations on a weekly basis and full accommodation in our Eco-Village in a shared twin tent, with male and female volunteers accommodated separately.
We live in a semi-remote area and the town of Hoedspruit is approximately 30km away, so you should be comfortable spending longer periods on the property and enjoying a quieter, nature-based lifestyle. There are no bars or clubs nearby, making this an ideal environment for people who enjoy nature, outdoor activities, community and a peaceful setting.
If this is something you might be interested in and community work, conservation and sustainability are areas you would like to experience, please get in touch. Whether you already have experience or simply have a willingness to learn and contribute, we would be happy to hear from you.
Volunteers can work across several departments, depending on their interests, skills and the needs of the reserve.
    Permaculture Garden
Volunteers help maintain our permaculture garden and growing spaces while learning about sustainable food production and practical permaculture techniques. This includes companion planting, soil health, general garden maintenance, planting, harvesting fresh produce and helping us prepare garden produce and products for local farmers' markets.
    Conservation
Volunteers work alongside our field guides on practical conservation projects across the reserve. This may include removing invasive species, managing bush encroachment, maintaining and managing trails, restoring habitat and assisting with general conservation and maintenance work.
    Education
We run a six-week environmental education program for local learners. Volunteers with teaching experience or an interest in environmental education can assist with lessons, activities and educational sessions. This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge while learning more about the local community and environmental challenges.
    Events & Workshops
We host monthly events, workshops and community activities. Volunteers can help with preparation, set-up, hosting and practical support, and may also have opportunities to contribute their own skills, ideas and interests to activities with guests and the local community.
    Recycling & Creative Projects
We make use of recycled materials wherever possible and encourage volunteers to find creative ways to repurpose them. There is scope to build practical items, improve existing spaces and take on small projects during your stay. If you enjoy building, creating, repairing or finding creative solutions, this is a great opportunity to put those skills into practice.
The work is varied and hands-on, and volunteers should be comfortable spending time outdoors and getting involved wherever help is needed. Some days may be physically demanding, but there is always an opportunity to learn something new, work with different members of the team and see the direct results of your contribution.

    Unterkunft

Volunteers stay at our Eco-Village in canvas tent accommodation. Each tent has two beds with bedding and towels provided, a solar fan and a solar light, making it a simple but comfortable place to relax after a day of work.
Volunteers share a communal bathroom and fully equipped communal kitchen.
Fresh ingredients are provided each week, and volunteers can use these to prepare their own meals. You can choose to cook together with other volunteers or prepare your own meals. There is also space to bring additional ingredients if you have specific foods you enjoy or dietary preferences.
One of the unique features of the volunteer area is our eco gym, which was built by previous volunteers using recycled materials. It is a great example of how volunteers can leave their own contribution behind and become part of the ongoing story of the project.

The Nature Reserve is located within the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere and in your spare time, there is a lot of nature to explore. Our volunteer work schedule is from Tuesdays to Saturdays, with Sundays and Mondays as off days. Volunteers often use these days off to explore other surrounding places such as visiting the Blyde River Canyon, Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route and much more.
The closest town is Hoedspruit, approximately 30km away, where you can find shops, restaurants, cafés and other amenities.
A vehicle is needed for most excursions beyond the reserve. We do have cars available for rental within the property, and there are several vehicle rental companies in the area. Transport services are also available, although these can be more expensive than renting a vehicle.
The reserve itself offers plenty to do for those who enjoy being outdoors, including hiking, birding, conservation work, mountain biking and simply spending time in nature.
Living here is about more than just volunteering. It is an opportunity to experience the South African Lowveld, work alongside local people, learn practical conservation and sustainability skills, share your own knowledge and culture, and become part of a community working towards a more sustainable future.
