We have a piece of land with a battered old off-grid house. I need a handful of workawayers to do a variety of manual work - watering trees, pruning, clearing some land, chopping firewood, whitewash, planting trees. For the second half of October. This is short - term, but you can stay on. You'll have the house to yourselves - I live a few kms away. You have a budget which covers a vegetarian diet and some wine, or wine and some vegetables; the group chooses.

This is a small mountain village, a world far away from tourist Spain. It's very very quiet, but equally very friendly. You'll be greeted by everybody - they would love it if you can chat to them (though the local dialect / accent may make that a challenge...) . It's surrounded by a National Park, walking routes, a river, hills and mountains, forest land. If you want to see just how calm village life is, it's perfect; if you want to get right away from everything, it's perfect. Whilst I'm here I can happily teach shiatsu / massage, eco-building, Spanish, local history, tapas, about trees...

One benefit? four people who met here got married ( wait, listen - two separate marriages...); four more are couples still. You don't have to get married.

The land needs a variety of basic maintenance - pruning, irrigation, turning compost piles, fence building, cutting down trees, splitting firewood, digging Big Holes, mending stuff... The house always needs whitewashing, floors sealing, cracks filling, mending stuff...

For the more project-orientated, previous workawayers built a small cabin that needs finishing inside - shelves, whitewashing, furniture making / recycling. If we've time / energy you might build a bench rocket stove from cob. The land around it needs to be turned into a garden.

We'll work about 4 - 5 hours each morning and the rest of the day is yours. We'll do five days, then take two days off, then work five days. After that you can stay longer if you like, but at your own (minimal - a couple of euros a day? ) expense.

The Off Grid House. This is a great opportunity to discover the mixed reality of life off the grid if that seems attractive....The existing but slowly-falling-down farmhouse is an odd mix of brilliant and basic. There are four bedrooms with beds and bedding provided, and a simple common kitchen and sitting area, terraces, toilets, swimming tanks, and and and other things beginning with t. There is firewood, a stove, water from a spring, some limited 12v electricity, phone chargers, gas for cooking, solar shower, rocket stove... It's a 15 minute walk from the village down a dirt track. There are also many books and CDs there. And a wood fired pizza oven. Also an Estonian sauna house ( thank you Alvin and Ann-Liis...). It's an excellent introduction to the good and bad of off-grid life.

You get given a budget, as a group, and use it how you like. It's enough for a simple vegetarian diet with cheap wine. Some groups have concentrated on the wine... it's up to you. You all take turns cooking and looking after the house.

Please make sure you understand that Off-Grid sounds great, and in many ways it really is. But it also means just a few hours electricity for lights in the evening; you can have bucket baths but not showers; the limited shops are 20 minutes walk away; you may have to carry gas bottles for cooking; you can't get to the house by car; etc.

The weather is likely to be sunny much of the time, but cool at night, and if it rains it gets very muddy. You'll need strong work shoes and old clothes ( there is a heap of clothes etc left by previous workawayers, but they usually left hem behind for a reason ).

You can easily get to and from here by public transport to Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba, Malaga; Madrid is a few hours away by train. There's a train station in the village, a bus to the market town of Ronda every day, I'm good about giving lifts if I'm here. The walking and birdwatching is outstanding. It's not not, really not, exciting party life; very very placid, easy going, open-ended.

I've hosted maybe 100 workawayers over the last few years; I'm looking this time for low-maintenance people and I'll support you!
