We are a family farm which practices organic and sustainable animal husbandry and gardening. We raise cattle for meat and milk, chickens for meat and eggs, and have horses, dogs, and cats as pets. We have some fruit trees and bushes, but hope to expand this dramatically in the coming years. We have decent space for vegetable/herb gardening and infrastructure to expand. We would love someone to stay with us that could help us set up bee hives so we could help pollinate our farm while enjoying honey. We primarily make income from rentals, and therefore this is a primary focus, including eco-tourism opportunities for our guests. So all our practices benefit everyone-rental guests, ourselves, and you. Our goal moving forward is to continue maintenance of the existing animals, expand the gardens and fruit production for U-pick for our rental guests, and to overall improve the property. We would love to host you and have you come help us grow our farm!

Workawayers will benefit by exposure to the wide and varied activities gained on an organic and sustainable Appalachian farm. We will learn from you, you will learn from us. We will share stories and experiences. The small nearby town of Marshall, NC has many young and like-minded sustainable farmers and artists, as well as an up and coming (small) scene. The nearby city of Asheville, NC is thriving with tourists, art, restaurants, music, and tons of outdoor activities (hiking, mountain biking, river rafting and kayaking, etc!)

Workawayers will also be able to enjoy our 150 acre farm, can fish the pond, as well as eat from any of the vegetables and fruits we grow together, and eat the grass-fed, antibiotic free, hormone free beef we raise here on the farm from our cattle.

We ideally would host a couple, or a strong and independent single person. We want our workawayers to have at least some basic knowledge of homestead and community oriented living, organic gardening, and basic animal husbandry. We would love to host people who are self motivated, organized, timely, and are willing to take on projects without much intervention. We have a farm manager on site who can help coordinate day to day operations, but there is so much going on around here (including some small children to take care of) that we do not have a ton of time to be with you while you are working. Of course we will help direct as best we can and on an as needed basis - we want everyone to succeed around here!
We have two lodging options for those wishing to stay with us.
    1) You stay in our 16ft off grid, remodeled, vintage camper which includes a composting toilet (a bucket with wood shavings), running water, propane heat, propane refrigerator and stove/oven and a memory foam double bed. We provide propane and access to water to fill your tank, as well as a 5 gallon jug and dispenser for drinking water. We would love to build an outhouse and an outdoor shower near the camper site, so if you feel like having this additional accommodation, we would love to have you spearhead that project. Otherwise, we would provide access to our house or farm managers living quarters for showers. This camper belongs to our farm manager, and we would expect you to treat it kindly and keep it well maintained during your stay. In exchange for staying here, you would be expected to put in a 30 hour/week in work on the farm. If it's a couple, that time would be split between you, not 30 hrs/person.
    2) You bring your own lodging-either off grid or plugged into our water/electricity- in exchange for 20 hrs/week farm work. Anything above this, we could discuss a small stipend, but you would not be required to work over 20hrs.

We also raise cattle, chickens, horses, and have other animals on the farm, as well as a small organic garden. We have some fruit bushes and trees, but would love to plant many more. We have 150 acres to attend. Some of your daily tasks would include:

    Animal husbandry:
-Cleaning chicken coops moving chicken tractors, feeding chickens
-Feeding and brushing horses and cleaning horse stalls
-Checking on cows whereabouts and occasionally rotate them through different pastures
-Milking our mama cow and brushing her as well as baby
    -Feeding livestock guardian dogs

    Plants Care:
-Seed prep and daily garden upkeep including watering and weeding and occasional planting/transplanting
-Harvesting produce from garden and prepping for storage or consumption
-Mowing and weed-eating lawns around house and rental spaces

    Building and Miscellaneous Farm Projects:
-Small building projects that include use of power tools and tractor
-Falling trees for firewood or forest management with chainsaw
-Miscellaneous maintenance projects that certainly will arise

    Cleaning and organizing:
-Cleaning our short term rentals when I cannot
-Organizing tools and barns as needed
-Cleaning common areas and various messes as they arise

Some skills that are desired (but not required):
    -attention to detail
    -creativity
    -community oriented mindset
-desire to learn and contribute what you know
    -self direction
    -knowledge of farm animals
    -power tool operation
    -basic carpentry
    -landscaping
    -gardening
-light and heavy equipment usage (mowers, tractors, trucks, chainsaw)
    -tree, brush, bush clearing
We, of course, welcome other skills, encourage you to share with us what we may not know and are looking for someone who is willing to learn from us, work hard, is self motivated, and willing to share with us your stories and experiences.

Our annual schedule generally look like this:
-animal care is ongoing year-round, more intensive in the winter and early spring
-building projects and fence repair year-round
-landscaping year-round with majority of transplanting in the fall and late winter and majority of grass mowing in summer
February-final winter cleanup, garden preparation, possible seed starting
March-rentals open and begin renting/cleaning, seed starting, garden preparation completed
    April-rentals, garden planting and maintenance
May-rentals, garden planting and maintenance, landscaping care
    June-rentals, garden maintenance, landscaping care
July-rentals, garden maintenance, seed starting, landscaping care
August-rentals, garden maintenance and planting, seed starting, landscaping care
September-rentals, garden maintenance, landscaping care, transplanting
October-rentals, garden maintenance, landscaping care, transplanting
    November-rentals, transplanting and overwinter preparation
    December-rentals, winter clearing

Our typical day might look like this:
    Morning:
-activities/projects for the week have been discussed, usually at the beginning of the week, but daily check in is helpful
-outdoor projects before the day gets hot (summertime), so gardening, lawn care, etc.
    Midday:
-Rentals cleaning, building projects, activities depending on the temperature and weather will vary, rest time
    Evenings:
    -gardening, lawn care, finishing projects

So much of our day is weather dependent, so we are very flexible and do not hold a rigorous routine. We would expect about 15 hours of committed time per week (per person). Or if you bring your own lodging, 20/hr weekly total. This could be 3 days/wk 5 hours labor or 5 days/wk 3 hours labor- depends on need at the time and anything else you have going on. We will discuss our plans for the coming week as they arise so we can figure out your schedule including time off.

    Was noch ...

Although we cannot guarantee you the use of a car, we do have vehicles which you can use with prior arrangement. The nearby town of Marshall, with 3 bars, 4 restaurants, a coffee shop, artist studios, a post office, and grocery stores is about a 10 minute drive away. The town of Weaverville is a 20 minute drive away with all of this and more, including a laundromat to wash your clothes (although we can discuss you using our washer/dryer at home too.) Asheville is a 30 minute drive away and a thriving small city with all you can hope for. There are innumerable outdoor activities in the area, from climbing, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, horse riding, swimming holes, river rafting, kayaking, tubing, fishing, etc. The nearest beach is about a 4.5-5 hour drive away (quite far!), but there is a lot to do here in the mountains. You are a couple hours drive from several bigger cities: Knoxville, TN, Charlotte, NC, or Atlanta, GA.

All this said, we usually find all the happiness we could hope for here on the farm and in our surrounding town of Marshall. We hope you will come join us.

We have wifi in several spots on the farm, so depending on where you park or camp, you will have wifi. We have had workawayers run a hotspot off our house to their camper to work remotely.

We can accommodate any size van/camper with water access (a hose) and electrical plug in in a spot near our horse barn and house. You are responsible to manage your grey/black water appropriately. If you bring your own lodging and can run off-grid, there are numerous places to set up that would be accessible, private, and with a view.

This very much depends on your pet and how they behave with our dogs, cats, children, chickens, livestock, rental guests. We would prefer no pets or a small pet. We would need to discuss in length your animal behavior before accepting it here. We hope you understand.
