Beschreibung
We are a large, active monastery dedicated to serving the public through culture, education, and community engagement. Daily life here follows a clear rhythm shaped by community practice and shared responsibility.
This is not a silent retreat center or a secluded jungle temple, but a dynamic, active monastery. Volunteers live within this energetic environment and support its daily operations alongside monastics and other devotees.
We welcome individuals aged 18–60 who sincerely wish to understand Buddhist community life from within. You don't need to be a Buddhist, but you must be open to cultural differences, willing to follow monastery etiquette, and ready to participate responsibly in a structured environment.
Through both service and daily cultivation, you will gain insight into how Humanistic Buddhism is practiced in contemporary society.
Mindfulness begins with reading. To ensure a harmonious and meaningful stay for both of us, please read the full profile carefully before applying.

Immersion in "Living Buddhism"
- Structured Daily Rhythm: Daily life follows a structured schedule with key activities—including volunteer duties, meetings, and cultivation practices—from early morning to late evening. This rhythm helps you regulate your body and mind.
- Cultural Interaction & Language: You will have the opportunity to practice Mandarin and interact with monastics, local volunteers, and international participants. This interaction provides deep insight into modern monastery life.
- Dharma Learning: Reading materials are available for those interested in Humanistic Buddhism. Study groups or a Buddha Museum tour may also be offered to provide a deeper understanding of basic Buddhist teachings.
- Cultural workshops such as calligraphy and Tai Chi may be arranged to enrich your experience, depending on the monastery schedule.
- Personal Growth: Volunteers leave with insights into mindfulness, community life, and how Humanistic Buddhism is practiced in daily life .
Arbeit
"Service is Practice"
In our monastery, we view daily service as a form of active meditation.
Community & Tasks:
You will work alongside monastics, students, and local volunteers to support daily operations.
Tasks:
- Volunteers mainly assist with meal service and cleaning in the dining halls, as well as general support in different monastery departments.
- During festivals or large Dharma services, you may also help in event areas and occasionally assist with visitor support.
- This is a structured, team-based environment and can be busy during peak seasons.
Physical & Mental Stamina:
- Tasks often involve walking, standing, or carrying items, so volunteers should be in generally good physical and mental health.
- If you have allergies, take regular medication, or have ongoing health considerations (including emotional or mental health), please check with us before applying so we can assess suitability.
Communication & Culture:
- We communicate mainly through WhatsApp and face-to-face, so please be ready for regular coordination.
- Daily routines may differ from what you are used to, and cultural differences may feel challenging at times. Therefore, flexibility, openness, and adaptability are highly valued.
Language:
Volunteers must be able to communicate in English.
Basic Mandarin is helpful but not required.
Engagement:
- This program is not suited for those seeking complete silence or a private retreat.
- A variety of workshops and cultural activities are arranged to enrich the experience.
- Full engagement allows you to settle more deeply into monastery life.
External Commitments:
If you have work or study commitments, please discuss with us before applying. We need to ensure your schedule allows for the full immersion this program requires.

- Minimum Stay: 2 weeks.
- Arrival Requirement: You must arrive on the 1st or 3rd Monday of the month by 2:00 PM . A comprehensive orientation begins immediately in the afternoon to help you settle in. Late arrivals cannot be accommodated.
- Daily Rhythm & Expectations
Please note that monastery life follows a structured daily schedule. Many key activities—including volunteer duties, meetings, and cultivation practices—take place from early morning to late evening.
For this reason, we generally look for volunteers who can adapt to a structured daily schedule from early morning to evening and are willing to settle down in the monastery setting.
Community Rules:
- Dress Code: Modest attire is required at all times. Long pants and covered shoes. No tank tops, shorts, or revealing clothing.

Location:
- We are located in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.
- The monastery is about 1 hour from Kaohsiung city center and around 2 hours from Kaohsiung International Airport by public transport.
- If you are arriving via Taipei, it takes approximately 2–2.5 hours by High Speed Rail (HSR) from Taipei to Kaohsiung.
- Please check the travel distance and connection time carefully before booking your flight or arrange your schedule to ensure you can arrive at the monastery by 2:00 PM on your arrival day for the mandatory orientation.
Visa:
Volunteers are responsible for obtaining the correct visa; we do not provide documentation.
Connectivity:
Wi-Fi is available in some common areas for essential use, though connection stability varies.
Is this program for you?
You will thrive here if you:
- Are genuinely curious about Buddhist life and willing to participate respectfully.
- Resonate with the idea that "service is practice" and are ready to be active.
- Can adapt to a structured daily schedule and communal living.
- Respect cultural norms, dress codes, and a strict vegetarian diet.
- Approach your stay with gratitude and humility.
This program may NOT be suitable if you:
- Are looking primarily for a silent / meditation retreat.
- Prefer a highly flexible schedule.
- Feel uncomfortable following guidelines (e.g., dress code, gender separation).
- Have heavy external commitments that prevent you from participating fully in community life.
- Cannot live without meat, alcohol, or smoking (all prohibited).
