Hello, our names are Rob and Ros. We have a 6 hectare rural property near Nimbin on the NSW North Coast. We have lived here for 25 years. The property has about 1.5 hectares of managed gardens and rainforest restoration areas. The rest is bush. We are fully solar (electricity and hot water). The house has never been connected to the grid (regional power system). We raised our 3 children here. They are now young adults pursuing their lives around the world.
We have travelled overseas a bit and our kids are world-travellers. So we are keen to have the world come and visit us too - for company and a little help in maintaining the gardens, rainforest and house.
Ros works at the local school. She is also a volunteer breastfeeding educator and counsellor in her spare time. Rob works for a crisis support service and trains volunteers. He worked as a rainforest revegetation contractor and vegetation management consultant for several years. He is happy to explain Australian rainforest ecology and restoration while you work, if you are interested in that sort of thing.
Apart from the solar systems, the house also has a waterless composting toilet and its own water supply – a dam for the gardens and rainwater for the house. We have a vegetable garden and small orchard which are seasonally quite productive. As well as the rainforest regeneration areas, we also have an extensive collection of tropical ornamental plants from Australia and around the world. In fact, it’s a small botanic gardens!
There is quite a lot of wildlife around the house. We have several resident wallabies and the does (females) often have joeys (babies) in their pouches. Bats, including small insect eaters and large flying foxes (fruit bats) are common at night in the warmer months. Goannas, bush turkeys, bandicoots and echidnas also visit occasionally. Birdlife is fairly abundant. There are a few bugs around in the warmer months, but that is all part of living with rainforest.

Hilfe bei Ökoprojekten
Dieses Projekt schließt möglicherweise den Umgang mit Kindern ein. Mehr Informationen findest du in unseren Verhaltensregeln und Tipps hier.
Tasks you may be asked to help with include light gardening (planting, weeding, mowing), rainforest maintenance (controlling weed vines and trees), maintaining walking tracks and sometimes small construction projects (sheds, footbridges, etc.). You are also expected to help a little bit with the basic housework (washing dishes, cleaning your room, etc.). We are happy to prepare meals, but welcome you taking a turn at cooking if you wish.
We welcome Workaway visitors in the autumn Mar/Apr/May and spring Sept/Oct/Nov when the weather is most suited to outdoor work.
We welcome singles or couples. We have both a single room and a double room available in the house. There is also room to park a camper van or put up a tent if you wish.
We are 10km from Nimbin and 25 km from Lismore. It’s not necessary to have car as we can pick up and drop off in either Lismore or Nimbin at the start and finish of your stay. Public transport is limited, so it would useful if you have your own transport as there is lots to see around the area in your spare time. Local attractions within 1 hours drive include Nimbin, Border Ranges National Park (world heritage rainforest), Nightcap National Park, Byron Bay and lots of beaches. Or you can just hang out here – it’s peaceful and relaxed.
We have WIFI and reasonable internet speed, but restricted (and expensive) access. So basic websites, email, Facebook, etc. is fine, but no big upload/download (images, audio, video) please. Mobile phone signal is limited, but you can usually send/receive SMS by moving the phone around to find a good signal. All standard electrical appliances work here and you can plug your camper van into the house.
We prefer non-smokers, moderate alcohol consumption is fine.
