We are a remote, off-grid wilderness homestead / permaculture-oriented community located deep in the Six Rivers National Forest in Northern California. We live on 160 acres of mostly forested land and cultivate large gardens, perennial food forests and orchard trees, as well as maintaining solar, spring-fed water, composting toilet, wood heat, and other permaculture systems.
We offer regular volunteering (minimum two weeks) year-round, and also internships -- an intensive, hands-on learning experience with either a 3, 6 or month commitment The internship covers all the basics of sustainable living, from food production and sourcing water to building shelter, foraging, wildcrafting, animal husbandry, and medicinal plants. Weekly reading assignments will focus on various areas in conjunction with hands on work.
Work can include garden and food production and processing, animal care (chickens, goats, dogs, cats), stone building, cob, firewood processing, soil building, and on and on.
Our work and community schedules are pretty flexible other than one weekly community meeting;
We provide Workawayers room and board -- either a cabin, the Lodge or (in summer) large 6 man tent with a mattress, bedding, etc -- in exchange for 25hrs/week work-trade.
We are all hard workers who like to get things done but also take time to stop and enjoy the fruits of our labor - if this sounds like you and you're up for a learning adventure, we look forward to hearing from you!

Learning the culture of sustainable living (permaculture) here involves implementing it's principles, primarily
1. How to mimic nature in designing and maintaining efficient, natural systems of farming
2. Developing a reverent relationship with the land, plants and animals
3. Creating healthy community relationships through effective, compassionate communication and self-expression (our focus is NVC/Nonviolent Communication)
We usually have several projects going at any given time. Usually some building - cabin, goat pen, hobbit hole, tree house - and landscaping - terracing, rock wall building. And then garden things of course, depending on the season - planting, weeding, tending, propagating, pruning, harvesting. Food processing, soil building, animal care, and taking care of common areas.
May through later October / early November most volunteers stay in cabins or large 6-man tents(with mattress).
Locally there are spectacular redwood groves and hikes. We're in the Siskiyou Mountain range and is within the National Forest and National Recreation Area. So lots of nature to be explored. The Ocean is 45 minutes away.
