In 2001 we settled on a 40 acre parcel and began our sustainable off grid homestead (in a mixed conifer forest (redwood, doug fir, tan oak and madrone) a 20 minute drive from the Pacific Ocean (7 miles as the crow flies). We produce much of our own foodwith year round vegetable garden, dairy goats for milk, yogurt and cheese, and chickens and ducks for eggs (we are not a farm business). We also produce our own herbal medicines including tinctures, teas and distillations. We produce our own solar electric, use wood for heat and have water from our own well. Melinda is an Acupuncturist and Karl is teaches Tai Chi and Meditation.
We are committed to biodynamic gardening, holistic healing (including acupuncture and plant based medicine), meditation, and energy practices, all within the context of a deep appreciation of nature. We have a history of involvement with creative arts. We are devoted to the essence of food, it’s quality, and it’s preparation. Basically we are committed to the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle—body, mind and spirit.
We have space available to park a camper with a water hook up and compost toilet, at the sanctuary, in Annapolis, California, the most remote corner of NW Sonoma County.
At this time we would welcome skilled Workawayers, such as carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or any miscellaneous homestead skills.

The learning possibilities here include all things necessary for an off the grid, sustainable homestead, such as building, growing food, caring for farm animals, and living in a remote peaceful place. Cooking with what is available seasonally from the homestead is another practice of ours. Learning to milk a goat, make goat cheese and making pizza in an outdoor cob oven are other offerings. We also offer to share our experiences as an acupuncturist and Tai Chi teacher, also meditation and Taoist practice.
A car is useful for coming and going. We are 20 minutes from Hwy 1and the Pacific Ocean and 30 minutes from the nearest town for shopping. Interns really do need a car for a long stay, but for a short stay we can give occasional rides into town.
Without a car, there is a bus that comes within a 20 minute drive where we can pick people up. This bus goes to Santa Rosa and from there it is possible to get buses to the Bay Area or farther north.
Much of the help is routine, such as daily animal care, watering, checking on the electricity and water pumping, etc. Various projects come up unexpectedly too on an off grid homestead. There is a nice mix of routine and non routine for helpers, and a variety of tasks arise in the creative pursuit of homesteading. We pay attention as much as possible to moon cycles and biodynamic calendar in our planting and gardening activities.
Workawayers will help in the garden, making biodynamic compost, applying biodynamic preparations, preparing garden beds for planting and seeding, harvesting and watering. Also care of the animals such as feeding of goats, ducks and chickens, learning to milk our goat, and make goat cheese. Some upkeep of trails in the forest, preparing firewood, care of fruit trees and grape vines, small building projects and repairs. During the summer harvest there may be some pickling and jam making as well.
Workawayers will participate in and learn all aspects of life on a self sustaining, off the grid homestead surrounded by nature, as well as have time to pursue personal creative projects or spiritual practice in a beautiful and peaceful setting. The creative projects can include any artistic pursuit, such as writing, drawing, building, music, etc
The help here is not overly rigorous but it helps to be into physical tasks and enjoy the outdoors. Most of the year is very indoor /outdoor on our homestead. Experience is not necessary for those with a willingness to learn, but we are open to allowing those with experience do something of interest to them.
We estimate about 24 hours a week of help. Depending upon length of stay, after a week or so, once you are comfortable here, we can co create a workable daily schedule to keep the homestead functioning. Since we have part time jobs, we need to coordinate that with interns. And, as mentioned, there is plenty of free time to pursue personal interests.
We can also work out a schedule to share our knowledge on things of possible interest , such as meditation, making plant medicine, etc.
Accommodations are a trailer for sleeping and lounging, containing the compost toilet, with an RV that serves as a well equipped kitchen and dining area. Both are situated together under a roof next to a stand of redwoods. The outdoor shower is nearby.
Karl and Melinda are omnivores though we tend towards vegetarian. We will work together with you on a meal-planning schedule once you are here so that we have time together to socialize and share. We tend to do irregular hours, so we feel it is fairer to allow you to prepare your own food on your own schedule. We will provide food for you to prepare yourselves, including eggs from our chickens and fresh fruit and vegetables from the homestead. We eat as much as possible from our homestead but provide other staples. Food is good and organic and simple and delicious! We are not equipped to provide processed foods such as soy milk or other vegan substitute items however you are able to purchase these items in town if desired.
The phone and internet service are very good, but can only be accessed through the Verizon network. A Verizon cell phone (or a phone that can work off Verizon) is very desirable since it is the only service that works in this area. We can provide some use of the internet wifi for email, etc. but not for streaming movies.
It's essential to have a car if you want to see the area, but many like to just enjoy the peace of staying put. We can give occasional rides to the nearby ocean or to town. Sonoma and Mendocino counties have many beautiful nature areas to experience. We are near vineyards, ocean beaches, forests and beautiful Hwy 1. There is a swimming hole in the creek that can be driven to in 15 minutes, or walked in an hour.
There are a couple of other local folks we know who host wwoof or workaway guests and in the summer we sometimes gather.
We are in an area of extreme forest fire danger in the summer. PLEASE NO SMOKERS.

We have excellent Verizon cell service, so this with Verizon service have no trouble receiving 4G internet with their cell phone as a hotspot.
We have a site with a compost toilet and water available, not as a hook up but can be used to fill a water tank.
