Wonderful experience with a warm-hearted family!
We spent almost two weeks with Tiaki, Madelin, Tāwhai, and Māhina, and it was truly a memorable time. From the moment we arrived, they welcomed us warmly and made us feel like part of their family.

… read more communication with us, expressing their gratitude for our support. Our main task was helping with the construction of their own yurt, and together, we managed to accomplish a lot in a short period. We also spent plenty of time with the kids – playing, laughing, and learning together.
The food was exceptional – upon our request, it was vegetarian and prepared daily with fresh, local ingredients. We felt truly cared for and nourished.
Our accommodation was cozy and surrounded by animals – we were often visited by a chicken and the cat Tōhu, and during our house sit, we also had the joyful company of their friends dog Rose. Being around these lovely animals was a wonderful experience for us, as we both love spending time with pets.
We also had the chance to share many interesting conversations, learning not only about their lifestyle but also gaining insights into their te reo Māori speaking family, which was an enriching and unique experience.
Their hospitality and kindness made our stay special, and we are grateful for everything they shared with us. We would highly recommend staying with them to anyone looking to experience genuine Kiwi hospitality and learn more about Māori culture.
We’ll also miss the lovely visits from Alec, Jackson, and Ruby. Thanks for everything!

I’m deeply grateful to Tiaki, Madeline, Tāwhai, and Māhina for such a heartwarming and special first Workaway experience. From day one, they welcomed me into their beautiful whare with open arms, making me feel like part of the family.

My main tasks included spending time with the two-year-old Māhina and helping with daily chores like tidying the tiny house, yurt, laundry, and a bit of gardening. It was a joy to bond with both Tāwhai and Māhina. Tāwhai’s generous heart, talent in art and music, and thoughtful curiosity made every moment with him rewarding—whether we were talking music or sharing laughs over his playful, loud energy. Māhina’s bright smile, playful spirit, and sweet singing will always hold a special place in my heart. I miss them both dearly and feel so lucky to have been part of their world, even for such a short time.
Thank you for the opportunity to be part of your lives and for the love and kindness you shared with me.

I had a beautiful experience with Tiaki, Madeline, Tāwhai, and Māhina. We had great conversations and I really enjoyed sharing perspectives and ideas. Tasks included looking after Mahina and helping out around the property. Meals were included and always yummy and nutritious (as well as lots of coconut yoghurt). Being part of their family and learning more about Maori culture did not feel like a job- it felt like a privilege.
Raglan is a beautiful area, and I had ample opportunity to explore the cute little town and the nature too (hikes, waterfalls). The family was kind enough to lend me their car which definitely came in handy.
The family inspired me and encouraged me in all my future endeavours, and for this I will forever be grateful.
Thank you so so much for having me. It was an experience like no other, which I know I will always cherish and look back on fondly. I hope one day I can visit again.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

I had a productive almost 2 week stay with this family, and very much enjoyed my time here!! The off-grid lifestyle was a nice change of pace, and my accommodation was comfortable. I mostly spent my working hours running the chainsaw alongside Tiaki (and their pup Zoe) removing gorse and cutting up firewood. I appreciated that I was provided with

Tiaki and Madelin were very hospitable and resourceful hosts. We had many good conversations - both are very knowledgeable about Māori culture and philosophy. I also found it very cool to hear them speaking te reo Māori as a family. My respect grew for these two the more I learned about their goals within their rites of passage projects, as well as their efforts to reconnect the Māori within the Raglan community to their new land in Waitetuna - important land that the Māori hadn’t had access to for a long time. It was a privilege to see that reunification in person and something I’ll always remember. They are hard workers and awesome parents who go above and beyond for their community, family, and guests.
Thank you Tiaki, Madelin, Tāwhai, and Māhina for welcoming me into your home, it was a pleasure to get to know you all!! Mauri ora

From the moment I met the family, I felt a positive, calm energy that I really resonated with. My originally planned two-week stay turned into 4 weeks, and I could easily have stayed a few months more! 😊
I was also grateful that at times there were other workawayers to share the experience with and have company while exploring nearby
… read more areas.
Tiaki and Madelin were amazing hosts and great at being flexible with work hours and things that they needed support with. It was refreshing to be able to do activities that got me moving while being outdoors, such as planting trees, raking and weeding. But I also got my fair share of more 'relaxed' tasks such as peeling feijoas or sapotes (and eating a few too!).
I also had the privilege of spending time engaging with Māhina and Tāwhai, although this could hardly be considered as work. Given my educational background with childcare, spending time with the kids was very special and heart-warming to me- I'll definitely miss the spontaneous cuddles I got from the children (as well as the cat, Tohu, and Zoe the dog! 😊
Tiaki and Madelin were also great at being present and extremely generous hosts, in that they took an interest in engaging with me and I felt like I was treated like a family member, rather than a worker. It meant a lot to be included in their every day life and invited to be a part of personal events such as family celebrations and Maori traditions.
They're definitely the kind of people that one is inspired by, can learn from, and strives to be more like. Thank you both so much for being amazing role models and giving me more faith in humanity 🙏
Rather than a 'goodbye', it's 'until next time'!

Four weeks with those lovely people, I can't believe how fast the time went by! I felt such a warm and open welcome into their family, tiny house, and beautiful piece of land!

I stayed in my van most of the time, to have my own space which worked completely fine and it was also perfect for exploring Raglan and surroundings.

I'll miss the crafting sessions with Tāwhai, the morning cuddles and reading sessions with Māhina, the deep talks with Madeleine and Tiaki and the cuddles with Zoe and Mau of course!!!! And the chickens aswell! ;)
Thank you for the inspiring and amazing four weeks!

I also felt like there was a huge cultural exchange from their side as they are some of the organisers for the rite of passage for boys and men in Raglan and I had the privilege of learning lots about this, as well as hearing te reo Māori being spoken daily and learning about Māori culture.
The little annex where I slept was really cute and even though it’s a shared space during the day I still felt like I had my own space to retreat to in the evening - there’s the added benefit of a corridor made of stars on the walk to the bathroom each night too! Super special.
Majority of the food you eat is all home grown and super delicious too, they were super accommodating with my dietary requirements as well.
Definitely a stay i’ll never forget and that will be a highlight of my North Island travels :)Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.
