    Description

FROM THE 20th OF MARCH WE ARE SEARCHING FOR A NICE AND DEDICATED VOLUNTEER! PLEASE, FEEL VERY WELCOME TO JOIN US! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Our Butterfly park build up from scratch needs your enthusiasm “Hosts / Guiding”… active!
Outdoor active Persons, very social, preference 25yr or older, MINIMUM STAY 3 weeks, preferably more (needs to have very good English communication skills!)
Located: 27 km. from the city Luang Prabang, 300meters from the most famous attraction in Laos.

    TRUE NATURE LOVERS:
Our Butterfly Park can be very suitable for persons who are active/initiative taking persons and really love nature like us. Our park and its surroundings are a true paradise! Uphill, attached to the small Khmu tribe village, beautiful (turquoise) water flowing down next to the premises.
A grounded person and true nature lover, who really wants to be and connect with nature is incredibly welcome to help here!

    YOU CAN REALLY HELP:
You can really make a difference with your help, on the long term! Help with visitor related jobs, so we - the founders- can promote the park in the nearest city, Luang Prabang, to go to hotels and guesthouses. No visitors, means no money and we really want to publish books for Lao school children about their great and vulnerable nature, do more research, collect data, etc.

    THE ACTUAL VOLUNTEERING JOBS:
So, please if you would like to do reception (welcome people!), guiding visitors in the butterfly section, handing out flyers (1 hour a day) at the entrance of Kuang Si Falls (this is a 7 minute WALK from our park), WE WOULD BE SO HAPPY!!
Be aware that you might conquer time (only in low season) to be patient when you are waiting for visitors! AND, loads to see, hear, feel and smell in nature! OR, bring your book, write about your experiences and suddenly… there is are visitors again ;-) In high season, there is a lot of social interaction going on, a big part of the day. Realize you need to be a 'social animal' to like this.

    BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE PARK:
Our butterfly park is opened since January 2014 for visitors and having welcomed many volunteers and we know one thing for sure: It takes special kind of people to gear up with us. So let’s be totally clear with one another!!! We are kind people, social, welcoming, clean (Dutch style), very direct in communication (Dutch style)… and most of all; totally devoted to what we do.
Our butterfly park has a variety of flower gardens AND a 900m2 netted butterfly garden and lots of waterfalls. In total it's about 1, 5 hectare. We are proud to study and put the small money we earn into studying Laos forest and butterflies. We love to explain the magical life of butterflies to visitors and hopefully soon to large numbers of Lao students in all age groups…. We are getting better and better… more organized… and STEP BY STEP MORE appreciated by many people in Luang Prabang. Foreign biologists, botanist and entomologists are offering help because we are the first butterfly park in Laos with a clear mission… to study and share.
Our mission is to create a research center studying and publishing about Laos butterflies, host plants and preservation because of environmental issues in Laos.

    THE VOLUNTEERS WE WANT:
We need for the coming months: Volunteers who are 25 years or older and most of all OUTDOOR PERSON'S AND NATURE LOVER'S FROM THE FIRST GRADE (stay 2-4 weeks). Having very good English verbal skills!
WE ONLY ACCEPT BEAUTIFULLY CLEAN AND VERY WELL TRIMMED BEARDS! Or better: no beards (unless yours is very pretty!) LAO Customs are: Lao people super dislike man/guys with a long, untrimmed beard. They think it's very unclean! They are very clean on themselves and expect this from another person as well!!

    - We give you a great time if you are honest and really want to connect to this place and are deeply in love with nature.
(Please, don't be calculative about the hours being on the premises) we expect you are active/ taking initiative and understand why we are so enthusiastic about our project
    - If you are afraid of spiders, geckos, or other things which are here in nature, please, apply for another volunteering job. THIS IS NATURE IN ALL IT'S PURITY!
    - We will smile in an understanding way if you complain about a hard mattress, slow Wifi or the size of your balcony….….. we expect you understand you are in LAOS! ;-)
    - We do love holiday’s as well, but relaxing at our place is mainly for visitors.

ACCOMMODATION COSTS $6 (50.000 LAK) PER DAY, PER BUNGALOW
It’s not a cheap solution to request for volunteers. You will pay for your own stay at a reasonable priced local guesthouse with very basic bungalows ($6 (50.000 LAK) per day) or you can choose for a more upper class local guesthouse as well, with ‘upper’ pricing ($30).

    FOOD
Your ‘food costs’ we will be happy to cover, for three nice meals a day, but realize, this will cost us the same amount of money as an average well paid Lao staff member… because we will give you full western meals and beverages (because we like nice, good and healthy food).
-> And most of all: we will be the ones shopping frequently 27 km away and put your nice sandwiches etc. on the back of our old motorcycles, as well, when it rains.
-> NOTE: on your free day(s) you will take care of your own food outside the park (you can buy breakfast, lunch and early dinner in the village), there are many food stalls at the parking lot of Kuang Si Waterfalls. We will give you instructions how to buy 'safe food,' since Laos has different food standards in comparison to Western countries.

    EARNING IT AND TRIPADVISOR
We do not have any external funding… we have to earn money every day. We believe this is the way to go strong, efficient and focused. We have invested all our money and build a year with local craftsmen to get our butterfly park up and open for visitors.

Our butterfly park is already nr. 3, 4 or 5 on Tripadvisor website because of the beauty and the energy we daily give to our visitors, our 7 Lao staff members and volunteers. In this order we operate…… after a few days of training we will love you like our staff, or even as friends but this is up to you… depending on your attitude and interest for nature.

    SUMMARY OF VOLUNTEERING JOBS:

We are searching for volunteers who wants to do jobs like:

-Entomologists, botanists and horticulturists (stay a minimum of 1-3 months).

    As well ass:

    - Receptionist

    - Guiding visitors in the butterfly house (we will give you a proper training)

    - Handing out leaflet's at the entrance of Kuang Si Falls, to inform visitors, 300 meters down the road is a newly opened park of butterflies with the goal: conservation nature!

    - Waiter/ Waitress for the costumers in our bakery/café (only in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar - high season)

    ------------------------

    REALITY OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT:
Kuang Si Falls area after 5.00 Pm (when the crowds are gone) is still beautiful, but an average rural Lao village with NOTHING TO DO/EAT/HANG OUT. Nothing here for you but the sounds of the falls and jungle. If you like to listen music (from your phone, laptop, etc), read books, write, play guitar, listen to all the sounds of nature, YOU WILL BE COMPLETELY IN YOUR ELEMENT.

    -> NO ATM

We will cook in equal turns and serve around 7.00 Pm the best meals without holding back in ingredients.

After 8.30 PM you’ll be out there at your basic bungalow hopefully having chats with other volunteers…… consider this….

Are you a strong person who also love to spend time alone… than you respond… if not, as attractive our story sounds, please respond to someone else who also needs your kindly help.

    DAY ROUTINE
    8.30 breakfast
    9.45 reception set up
    10.00 park open
11.30 (usually) first visitors will start to come
    16.30 park closes
    17.30/18.00 start cooking
(We will all take turns in cooking and compose 'cooking duo's.')
    18.30/19.00 start dinner

So, you will be on the premises between 8.30 and 16.30 o'clock, though (on your personal request) we can 'rotate' with one volunteer a day starting at 11.30, if you wish. Which means, when you have 3 volunteers: 2 people starting slowly at reception 9.45/10.00 am, but I would say, it really starts when visitors come (but it depends how you look at it).

    FREE DAY
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ You will be 2 nights/1 full day off per week. Which practically means: leaving at 15.30/16.00 o'clock to Luang Prabang, stay 2 nights there and after two nights be back around 10.00/10.30 am at the Butterfly Park. After staying longer then a month with us, if you wish, you can have 3 nights/2 days off.
If you wish to stay on your free day in the environment to hike around, you are still very welcome to join for all three meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or 'one of each.' Up to you, we are flexible ;-)

We simply do love it – “the Lao life”… … we are the butterfly-people as Lao people joke when we visit the city of Luang Prabang… actually we live surrounded by the blue waters of a famous waterfall, 27 km away from town but it’s magical and beautiful to life this dream.

Regards and looking forward to meet you! Write to us… your age, your picture, your motivation… your absolute skills…

With warm and colorful butterfly greetings,
    Olaf and Ineke
