We are a registered charity in the UK which transforms the lives of severely disadvantaged children by working with horses. We work with some of the most desperately sad local children. Aged between 5 and 17 they may be in foster care and struggling to cope, suicidal or seriously self harming, caring for a parent or siblings or living in environments dominated by drugs, alcohol, family breakdown or poverty. We teach them to ride horses, develop their confidence and social skills as well as providing them with vocational opportunities. Through working with horses we transform the children's attitudes to life and when they leave us over 90% are thriving.
We are going through the most exciting challenge in our 10 history as we have taken over a 40 acre beautiful, but run down riding school and are transforming it into a thriving equestrian centre. This is the permanent home for the programme and it provides the children with an oasis of green space where they can be happy and relaxed. We have 28 horses and ponies of all shapes and sizes.
On this lovely site we also have the Ride High Equestrian Centre that looks after the 28 horses, the paddocks, stables and where we teach the children from the Ride High programmes and where we run a commercial riding school that we hope will one day provide an income stream to the charity
We are looking for Workaways to help us at the Equestrian Centre and the work is primarily with the horses with opportunities to support the Ride High programm in their riding lessons
This is an opportunity to learn about how the programme helps transform disadvantaged children's lives using horses and an associated programme of clubroom learning. To help develop the first riding school in the UK that operates entirely for the benefit of disadvantaged children. Also a great opportunity to speak english.
We are looking for workawayers who would like to join our team and help us develop the Centre for the benefit of children who have no sense of hope for the future. There will be a variety of roles and tasks depending on your experience - in the stable yard eg. mucking out, grooming, teaching, leading ponies in lessons, general care, and/or helping us to do up the site (building/painting/electrical/plumbing/ carpentry/general maintenance/groundwork/outdoor maintenance)
We offer shared accommodation in a beautiful, bright, newly renovated first floor flat at the centre. We provide a double room for two same gender volunteers or a couple. The flat has a kitchenette and there is a full kitchen and utility room with washing machine and drier downstairs.
We offer a generous subsistence allowance - so you will be responsible for your own cooking - and a large supermarket is within easy walking distance.
The care for children that is at the heart of the charity extends to everything we do a the equestrian centre. We place the highest importance on caring for and respecting our horses and ponies, our people and our beautiful place. We pride ourselves on being a really friendly place to work, a place where everyone feels welcome and part of the team. We are a non smoking site.
We are 6 minutes walk from Central Milton Keynes bus and train stations. From here it is easy to get buses to Oxford and Cambridge and there is a 35 minute direct train service to Euston station in London. Milton Keynes is a thriving town with a wonderful theatre, cinemas, and a big shopping centre with cafes and bars. Bletchley Park, the centre of the wartime codebreaking is just 20 minutes away. Milton Keynes has beautiful parks and a huge network of cycle routes.
