    Description

    hello workaway volunteers

My name is Toon and I live on a 1 hectare rural residential property in the Daintree rainforest. This year I am looking for strong volunteers willing to help me with DIY projects. I will also consider couples.

I live a different life to most in this country. My life style is very frugal, earthy, clean and to the best I can be, self sufficient. I am very connected to my land and forest. I live without electronics and no one brings electronics on to my property. You will be required to surrender your electronics after emails to your family if you need to tell them you have arrived here. After this your phones and computers will be available at your request. It is a chance to detox from these items and it is the ‘number one’ reason most of my guests and volunteers apply to stay here. Most humans cannot leave these items alone for long, here it is enforced and many relish the opportunity.

I live off my garden and surrounding forest, My garden is unique and unrivalled in the region. The harvested tropical produce is organic and more importantly minerally enriched. There are not so many minerals in our farmed food these days. The second biggest reason people stay here is because of my garden and forest food experience. This garden is known around the country. I can teach you about tropical food gardens and how to be self sufficient in this area. I hunt and fish and put clean animal products in some of my broths and stews. You will eat in a different manner than what you may be used to. The food regime here detoxes, builds and strengthens the body, mind, spirit and soul. One volunteer last year lost 20kgs in 2 months, something he had never been able to achieve in the real world. My water is pure as pure, with no chemicals as most of the world now has to drink.

Volunteers and guests stay here for a few different reasons. Many want to clear the mind of chatter, I meditate and have helped many volunteers in skill building to attain a clear mind in a confusing and chaotic world. Some want to detox from a polluted world. Some wish to study holistic health. I have a library on this area and have many years of professional massage experience. Two volunteers have pursued careers in the health industry after spending time here. Others embrace more of the adventurist side of my existence.
Those who stay short term have accomodation, my special garden and directions to the Daintree’s tourist delights, which I make memorable as my local knowledge gives you an experience most tourists do not get to see or feel. Its all about timing. Those who stay a while I take on escapades you wont find easily in this part of the world. I have more forest experience and have clocked up more intense adventures than anyone in the region. You will get to see and if you are keen, stay deep in the jungle, in places few know about and no one frequents. Long term Volunteers may get to dive the Great barrier reef or go on up front and personal crocodile adventures. Many of the boys and a few girls have wanted to hunt with me. I have archery equipment, those who are carful with my tools and wares are welcome to use my sporting equipment. I will teach you how to use my bows and after you have put some hours into practice I will lead you into a hunt of forest destroying feral pigs. When we get one we roast it on a fire and enjoy the rewards of hard earned effort and time. Some volunteers want to learn about survival and those that put in time and effort get my 40 years of knowledge and experience in these fields.
Stay 3 months as many do and I take you on a very special secret tablelands adventure or an extreme rainforest adventure up to the top of my mountain. One full week in the jungle and up a mountain, this is not for the faint hearted, but after time with me you will be skilled and conditioned for the adventure.

Read the feedback, I am a hard man a caring and compassionate drill sergeant, this experience tests and challenges quite a few. It is far from your normal volunteering opportunities. Many volunteers and guests write me and tell me the time here changed their lives forever, something unintended when starting the program but something I am proud of as the years have past.

Note and note well. Only volunteer if you are prepared to do the time without your mind numbing phones and all electronics including kindels. Only volunteer if you are fit, strong, willing and able to move fast.
One of the mantra’s on this property is ‘move like Messi’

looking forward to hearing from you.

Be crazy while you are young, it gets harder as you get older
wishing you all fun, excitement, challenges, scares, indelible moments, and the absolute time of your lives

Arriving at my place with a USB of 'new' music and or movies will make you special from the first step. Present a USB for a Sunday night picture show with photos of your life (not selfies) things like granny’s back yard, the school block, the apartments in the hood, Dads shed, your old car, the motor way to work, river where you swim etc, do that and you may be pleased at some point that you made the effort and made the experience important even before you got here.

  • Help

    Help

I have a number of DIY projects that I and the volunteers have been helping on. I will lead you through all these activities with patience and care. You will be helping beside me and I will instruct you on anything that is new to you. At times you will be helping with power tools which many of the volunteers relish. You will get hands on experience and walk away with an array of new knowledge and new skills. There is always garden tasks to do and again you will generally help beside me, however some volunteers are awesome in the garden and I leave them to help alone while I carry on with other tasks. You will need to be strong and fit and be a person who moves fast. I am 60 with a 6 pack and there are not so many younger volunteers who can keep up with me.
