    Description

Former home of a ceramist, painter, writer, filmmaker and social activist, this historic house with a notable tradition is currently home to a non-profit association that combines arts, culture, creative tourism and conservation of cultural heritage.

Projected by the famous architect, illustrator and designer in the late fifties, during the second half of the 20th century this house became a meeting point for all sorts of relevant figures . The building resembles a house-museum, filled with unique stories that bring out the artistic, cultural and political contexts of Aveiro and Portugal in contemporaneity.

Closed for about ten years and on the verge of getting sold, in April 2016 the five-floor building was taken up by his grandson, Hugo. Supported by a small team of friends and artists, he urged to rescue his grandparents’ house, looking forward to the conservation of his family’s cultural heritage.

The building now features a guesthouse, an arts residency and a small gallery, where some of the works can be appreciated. The resident crew periodically promotes events and workshops in several fields of arts and culture, which mainly take place at the underground auditorium that used to play the role of a clandestine cinema during dictatorship.

Combining creative tourism with cultural activism, the interaction between national and international artists, foreign travellers and local audiences has converted the building into a lively and dynamic ecosystem. An artistic laboratory where the interchange of experiences and ideas is a constant reality, the house has once again become landmark in Aveiro’s cultural scene, while recovering its condition as a safe harbour for true lovers of arts and culture.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

If you are involved in arts or culture in general, our project can be an interesting platform to develop and implement your own projects. The house is a meeting point for creative spirits, so Workawayers are in constant contact with other artists and cultural agents.

Over the time we have developed an organic network both at the local, national and international levels. We collaborate closely with a number of partners from the Aveiro region, so you will probably get to know a lot of interesting people, projects and places.

You will also have free access to all the events organised at the house, and a discount rate for the workshops that we periodically organise (silk printing, electroacoustic performance, video editing, sound sculptures...). You will also get discount rates for other events organised by our partners.

Above all you’ll become part of our creative and lively ecosystem.

  • Help

    Help

Our non-profit project combines a guesthouse, an arts residency and a mico cultural centre. Therefore there are daily tasks related to every one of these aspects. But since the project's sustainability relies essentially on the guesthouse, our primary focus is keeping all guesthouse related operations running.

Workawayers are asked to help an average of 4 hours per day, 4 days per week. The main focus will be on housekeeping, with daily tasks such as cleaning the common spaces, preparing bedrooms, general maintenance, organising bed linen or shopping for supplies.

We encourage workawayers to help out with the cultural events periodically organised at the house (typically around 4 events per month), such as concerts, movie sessions, debates or poetry readings. It is up to each workawayer to decide their level of involvement in other missions more related to the cultural/artistic aspects of our activity —cultural programming, event production, communication...— depending on their availability, personal drive and skills.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We provide private accommodation (including electricity, hot water and wi-fi). Each helper has their own private room, while sharing common spaces such as a kitchen, two WCs, a dinning room and a small backyard. There is also a gallery, a library and an auditorium (equipped with 42 seats, a small bar and a projection booth), which are available for responsible use.

Located in the very heart of Aveiro, the charismatic building faces a small garden, which lies between our house and Aveiro’s main museum: you get all the comforts of staying in the centre of town, while enjoying the serenity of a peaceful street.

    What else ...

Almost everything worth visiting in the small town of Aveiro is at walking distance: Aveiro’s famous canals and salt mines, the Municipal Theatre, the several museums or the University. Aveiro’s stunning beaches are just half an hour away by bus, where you can have access to surf classes and other water sports.

Although there's also a lot to see and do around the region, both concerning culture and nature, you are also one hour away from Porto by train and two hours and a half from Lisbon, which are Portugal's main cities, both very vibrant and cosmopolitan.
